TRANSFORMING HEALTH THROUGH RAW VEGANISM, John McCabe, a lead author on raw food books shares his personal story of when his kidneys malfunctioned and doctors wanted to prep him for dialysis and removal of his thyroid - and eventually, a kidney transplant. He also had a bad back that was the result of many small injuries and was in horrible pain. Every time he went to see a doctor they simply wanted to prescribe more painkillers and do more types of surgery. Never did the doctors consider the incredible ability of the body to heal through diet, exercise, and positive thinking. So, instead of all those invasive and risky surgeries the doctors were telling him to undergo, he started taking care of himself through diet and exercise. When he was 45 he was offered a free physical at a heart institute and when the testing was done the doctor asked him what he was doing to care for himself because he had a heart as healthy as a twelve-year-old. The doctor wanted to know what types of foods he ate and what books to read to learn more about the raw vegan diet John had been telling him about.

The reason John wrote this book is because he wants people to learn about raw food veganism and understand that following a diet consisting totally or largely of raw plant matter will help them avoid many of the health problems that are becoming increasingly common among people living in an industrialized society. Diabetes and obesity are two health conditions common in people following what has become known as the Standard American Diet, which is called “the SAD diet.” Other health conditions that are more common among people who follow the junk diet low in Omega 3 fatty acids, rich in rancid oils, lacking in biophotons, heavy in animal protein, filled with bleached starches, abundant in clarified oils, saturated with synthetic chemicals, and lacking in raw fruits and vegetables include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disorders, liver toxicity, visual degeneration, colon cancer, and various organ issues - including erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer in men.

John explains that the key to following a raw food diet is to actually follow a diet that consists entirely or almost completely of raw fruits, vegetables, and with some sprouts, raw seeds, raw nuts and maybe some water vegetables added for a variety of nutrients. It is even better if a majority of the foods eaten are those grown in home gardens, or on nearby land and organic farms. To follow a raw food diet, you don’t need to be eating what amounts to packages of raw junk foods, which may not be heated, but may be so processed in their own way that they lack some of the most basic nutrients you would obtain if you simply ate a variety of organically grown fruits, vegetables, sprouts, germinates, nuts, seeds, and maybe water vegetables.

Below are some of my favorite paragraphs from the book: “Decades of scientific studies have shown that consuming raw fruits and vegetables and fresh sprouts is beneficial to human health. We also know that a plant-based diet is most beneficial to the environment, to wildlife, and to global health - especially when that diet is based on organically grown local fruits and vegetables.”

“The more your diet consists of a variety of enzyme-rich raw plant matter, the better health you can experience.” “Enzymes are substances that make life possible. They are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. No mineral, vitamin, or hormone can do any work without enzymes. Our bodies, all our organs, tissues, and cells are run by metabolic enzymes. - Dr. Edward Howell, Enzyme Nutrition”

“Biophotons are little specs of light that go away when a plant is cooked. In his 1956 book, The Sunfood Way to Health, Dugald Semple wrote, “Cooking devitalizes food, as when we kill seeds by boiling them, and thus causes the sun energy or galama in the plant cells to be dissipated.”▪ Semple was using the words of George Julius Drews, who wrote about galama in his 1923 book, Unfired Foods and Tropho-Therapy. I believe the modern-day term both Drews and Semple would have used for that sun energy galama they spoke of is biophotons. They also understood

what many people still today don’t seem to understand, that raw foods contain a nutrient that cooked foods do not: biophotons, or galama.”

“Enzymes are necessary for life, and all living things form and contain enzymes. There are more than 2,500 different types of enzymes in the body. They are made up of protein molecules that are paramount to all chemical reactions within the body. They act along with minerals, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and all other necessary components of the body tissues to produce living functions throughout the body. Enzymes are central to the formation, repair, restoration, and revitalization of all tissues.”

“When people follow a diet that is lacking in raw plant enzymes, their cellular activity begins to vibrate at a lower frequency, and their health degenerates into dis-ease.” “When a person’s diet is lacking in raw plant matter, the digestive enzymes degrade and begin to draw on the metabolic enzymes. This series of events weakens the body, causes sluggishness, and paves the way for illness to set in. The standard American diet of low quality foods is responsible for a human who is not living a quality life. The body is alive, but the system is weakened, and eventually is susceptible to limited physical and mental abilities, to unhealthful and damaged body tissues, to all sorts of illness, and to premature death… The best way to prevent disease is to avoid doing things that help create the terrain for diseases to take hold. Following a vibrant diet consisting largely of raw fruits and vegetables is one major key in maintaining vibrant health.”

“Foods that damage enzymatic activity within the body include meat, milk, eggs, and products made with them. They also included fried foods, foods that contain artificial dyes and flavors, as well as other artificial ingredients. Eating these deadened foods clutters the system and puts the body out of tune with nature.”

“The most ecologically responsible and most healthful way to grow food is to use organic methods - which is how all crops were grown for many thousands of years,

until the chemical companies began producing the toxic chemicals that are now used on farms.”

“To absorb the most high quality nutrients available from plants, seek out organically grown, nongenetically modified food. Organically grown food should be the first choice above any chemically “conventionally” grown produce. Naturally grown local foods will provide the best nutrients, ground you, integrate and adapt you with the environment, and tune your energy to be more in alignment with nature… They have a powerful way of beautifying and bringing a vibrant health frequency into the body.”

This book is an information-packed reference and recipe book all wrapped into one nice, beautiful 6”x9”paperback book consisting of 293 pages. It is a great read and resource for anyone who cares about their health and the health of our planet.

Steve Warren is a native of Oregon who has lived in West Valley City, Utah, since 1984. He and his wife, JaNiece, have three adult children.

His full-time employment career, which ended in 2008, included 13 years as a government employee at all four levels (city, county state and federal) and, most recently, 20 years as a copy editor/headline writer with the Deseret News in Salt Lake City. His occupations have ranged from a three-year white-collar job (clerk-typist) in Phoenix, where he received flowers during National Secretaries Week to a three-year blue-collar job (garbageman) in Salt Lake City where the man he replaced had been a bouncer at a night club, a man he worked with was a professional heavyweight boxer and the man who replaced him was a 7th-degree black belt in karate.

Steve’s free-lance writing background includes 1. winning statewide writing contests in Utah and Idaho, 2. selling articles to Popular Mechanics, True West, Sports Parade, Utah Holiday and a few other publications, 3. writing and publishing Drat! Mythed Again, a 183-page look at myths, miscalculations and downright awful predictions in Utah history, 4. writing and producing The Last Seminar, a 47-minute spoof of the get-rich-quick seminar industry, and 5. writing Beyond the Finish Line, a 304-page novel that has received favorable comments from Midwest Book Review and from the editor of Runner's World magazine.

In 1973, he received a bachelor’s in communications from BYU and still roots for the Cougars but sometimes finds himself cheering with equal—and occasionally more—enthusiasm for the Utes.

His side interests include golf, playing the accordion, volunteer work and running a 10K every year. He has run in 10 marathons, with a best time of 3:00.52.
