Parent Involvement Training Organizations

Knowing where and how to begin developing parent involvement skills and

confidence is not a simple process. The networks and community connections that parents have may strongly influence their approach to becoming involved in their children’s education. But not all approaches are equally effective or appropriate for students, parents, or families. A number of organizations provide guidance, advice, and training to parents in how to become effective and positive influences in the educational arena. This section provides several well-known and established parent involvement training organizations.

The Latino Family Literacy Project offers staff development training workshops for parent involvement to teachers who work with Latino parents and their children in building a regular family reading routine and developing strong English-language skills.

The ALLIANCE National Parent Technical Assistance Center (NPTAC) provides Parent Centers, Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs) and

Community Parent Resource Centers (CPRCs), with innovative technical assistance, up-to-date information, and high quality resources and materials. A major goal of the ALLIANCE National PTAC is to build the capacity of Parent Centers in order to improve results for children with disabilities ages 0 -26 in rural, urban and suburban areas and from underrepresented and underserved populations.

Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) creates partnerships between parents, students and educators to further students’ academic success. As a result of their work in parent engagement, more than 1.5 million under-served student's

educations have been enhanced since the inception of the organization in 1987. Public schools value this organization as well as parents. Students have benefited from PIQE as a springboard to their own personal and career success.

Helpful Resources and Numbers 24 HR Hotlines

The resources in this section cover a broad spectrum of basic services and are not associated in any particular way with education. Given the fundamental nature of these community resources, contact information is provided in both English and Spanish. The decision to provide bilingual contact information is based on an assumption that parents and families who access these community resources may be English-language learners, or may speak only Spanish. The objective is to ensure that language is not a barrier to access to services.

While these resources represent the local area served, they can be easily adjusted for other LEA’s when implementing the parent workshops or developing resource lists.
