BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (BEd Secondary)(TAS) SPECIALISATION

TWO PATTERNS OF STUDY ARE AVAILABLE IN THE TAS SPECIALISATION

Pattern one has a minor from a field other than TAS. Pattern one is recommended if you desire to study the honours program

Pattern two is recommended if you desire to have Design and Technology as a first teaching field, with Food Technology and Textiles Technology as additional teaching fields, but do not wish to take the Community and Family Studies units in the Home Economics/Design and Technology specialisation.

Title of Course of Study

Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Course structure:

The course structure is based on eight semesters (each of 13 weeks in duration), with four units taught in each semester. It comprises:

3 x Required Christian Studies for Teachers subjects 6 x Professional Experience Subjects

4 x Curriculum Studies Subjects 4 x Specialist Education Subjects

15 x Content related subjects (Students enrolled in Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) Pattern 1 specialisations usually complete a minor configuration from an approved minor in consultation with their strand convenor. An industry entry variant of TAS Pattern1 is available with advanced standing for a VET technology option instead of the minor configuration, and course duration potentially reduced to three years. Contact TAS strand convenor for further details).

Teaching areas include:

Design and Technology is the first teaching area. Depending on technology option(s) selected second/third teaching areas include: Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Industrial Technology, Computing Technology - Information Systems. Additional teaching areas for TAS Pattern 1 students include: Ancient History, Biology, Business Studies,

Chemistry, Computing Technology - Information Systems, English, Geography, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Modern History, Music, PDHPE, Physics, Studies of Religion, and Visual Arts.

Component Description Christian Studies

for Teachers Subjects

These subjects are central to the Christian Ethos of the institution and explore Christian foundations in biblical literature, assist students to examine their current world view and explore issues in relationship to Education and Christian faith.

Professional Experience Subjects

These subjects prepare pre-service teachers to teach in a secondary classroom. Typically these subjects are linked to a professional teaching experience and are designed to provide continual

professional growth over the duration of the course of study. Within a Quality Teaching framework these subjects focus specifically on topics such as; classroom management, preparation, assessment, duty of care, student welfare, motivation, and effective communication.

Curriculum Studies Subjects

These subjects provide pre-service teachers with the opportunity to apply quality-teaching principles to specific teaching areas. Current practicing teachers are employed in all key learning areas to provide specific pedagogical training for different subject areas. Literacy education, classroom safety, curriculum development and teaching strategies are dealt with specifically for the chosen teaching areas. All TAS students complete EDCZ29310 and EDCZ29320. Other curriculum studies will depend on technology options selected and for TAS Pattern 1 students minor selected.

Specialist

Education Subjects

Students complete four subjects that cover a range of current educational topics. Subjects include; Language and Literacy, Students with Special Educational Needs, Multicultural Education and

Indigenous Studies, Learning and ICT.

Design and

Technologies Core

Within the BEd (Secondary), TAS (Technology and Applied Studies) specialisation students complete seven design and technologies core subjects.

TAS Technologies Options

Students enrolled in the BEd (Secondary) TAS choose from two patterns. TAS Pattern 1 includes one technology option area. TAS Pattern 2 usually includes two technology option areas. Available technology options include; Graphics and Multimedia Technology, Industrial Technology, Food Technology, Textile Technology and Information Technology (Computing Technology-Information Systems). In consultation with the strand convenor TAS Pattern 2 students may extend a technology option rather than choosing a second technology option.

Information Technology Minor

Students who choose Information Technology as a minor complete four subjects in this area.

TAS Pattern 1 & 2 electives

Students enrolled in TAS Pattern 1 have one available elective.

Students enrolled in TAS pattern 2 have two available electives.

46 | P a g e

Honours

The BEd (Secondary)(Honours) degree consists of thirty-two 6 credit subjects (192 credits) studied over eight semesters full-time or the equivalent part-time. The academic year consists of two semesters each of 13 weeks duration. Normally students study four subjects each semester.

Students enrolled in Technology and Applied Studies Pattern 1 specialisation usually complete a minor configuration from an approved minor in consultation with their strand convenor. For Honours students, this minor is replaced by the Honours subjects.

Honours Subjects

The Honours subjects allow selected students to complete a program in research methodology and conduct their own research under supervision. These subjects culminate in a thesis of between 12,000 and 15,000 words. Within the BEd (Secondary)(Honours) the 24 credit points that are needed to complete the Honours requirements replace the minor in TAS Pattern 1 programs. Honours is not able to be

completed in the normal course duration for both TAS Pattern 2 and Home Economics/Design and Technology programs.
