Procedure 4.5. Controller Version Upgrade Conditions
2. Perform a Controlled start:
a. If the controller is turned on, turn it off.
b. Turn on the disconnect.
c. Press and hold the PREV and NEXT keys on the teach pendant. While you hold these keys, turn the controller ON. You will see a screen similar to the following.
d. Select Controlled start and press ENTER. You will see a screen similar to the one shown in Table 4.7. .

Do not perform a controller version upgrade during production. Controller version upgrade generates an error message that is not resettable until you turn off the controller and then turn it on again. You cannot turn off the controller until the upgrade is complete. Otherwise, the controller will be unbootable and you will have to reload the controller
completely.

g. Go to Step 19. . 3. Perform a Cold start:
a. If the controller is turned on, turn it off.
b. Turn on the disconnect.
c. Press and hold the PREV and NEXT keys on the teach pendant. While you hold these keys, turn the controller ON. You will see a screen similar to the following.
d. Select Cold start and press ENTER. you will see a screen similar to the following.
e. Press MENUS.
f. Select File.
g. Press F1, [TYPE]. You will see a screen similar to the following.
VERSION UPGRADE
Auto Clean FRD: : TRUE Auto Trans. COLD : TRUE
CTRL Upgrade will completely reload the robot. A separate backup should always be done before this operation.

4. Move the cursor to Download Control and select the kind of download control you want to perform. To select local control , press F4, LOCAL. To select network control , press F5, NETWORK.
5. Move the cursor to Source Device and use the F4, [CHOICE], key to select a source device.
6. Move the cursor to Backup Device and use the F4, [CHOICE], key to select a backup device.
7. Move the cursor to Restore Device and use the F4, [CHOICE], key to select a restore device.
8. Move the cursor to Auto Clean FRD and Auto Trans. Cold and press F4, TRUE or F5, FALSE.
9. When you are finished, press F2, CONTINUE.
If you choose local download control, you will see this screen:

10. To cancel the version upgrade whether it is done locally or over a network , press F5, NO. To proceed with the version upgrade , press F4, YES. During the upgrade, if you have selected network download control, you will see a set of screens similar to the following.

You have chosen to initiate Version Upgrade via
NETWORK. Pressing YES will put the robot in a FAULTED STATE. Once FRD:\NLICENSE.DAT is downloaded Version Upgrade will begin and cannot be reset until Upgrade is complete (10-20 minutes). Once started DO NOT cycle power until prompted.

NLICENSE.DAT is to be copied from
LICENSE.DAT in the root directory of source media. This is copied, usually with FTP to FRD:\NLICENSE.DAT on the robot. If NLICENSE.DAT compares exactly to
LICENSE.DAT, then the upgrade will proceed.
The use of NLICENSE.DAT and comparison only applies when network download control is
selected, and is done to verify that the correct software is loaded.

Version Upgrade will begin when FR:\NLICENSE.DAT is detected. Once Version Upgrade begins it cannot be cancelled.
Press Reset, PREV, or ABORT to CANCEL

If you want to cancel the upgrade at any time, press Reset, PREV or ABORT.

11. If an error is detected with the backup to the user-selected backup device, or in accessing the distribution media, an error message will be displayed. In this case, the initial version upgrade screen, shown onStep 19. , will be displayed and you will need to fix the problem and start the process again.
a. If an error is detected after the current system is unrecoverable you will see a screen similar to the following.
b. Press F4, RETRY. The version upgrade process is started over again and the initial version upgrade screen is displayed. Go to Step 19. .
12. When the Version Upgrade is completed, you will see a screen similar to the following.
Turn off the controller and then turn it on again to use the new information.
Note
The system is still intact and you do not have to complete the controller upgrade.
VERSION UPGRADE
WARNING - DO NOT CYCLE POWER!
************** ERROR ************
An error was detected during
VERSION UPGRADE. The VERSION UPGRADE must be retried. Failure to successfully complete this process before cycling power will result in an unbootable controller.
Please correct any problems then press the RETRY softkey in order to restart VERSION UPGRADE.
Note
The system is not bootable until this process completes successfully.
