When Laura was a university student, she found it very difficult to get by on her grant, so she decided to look for a part-time job. When she spotted an advertisement in the local paper for snack bar staff, she sat down to apply for the job. She wasn’t sure how best to go about presenting herself on paper, so she just jotted down the details of her qualifications and experience, and sent the application off immediately.

The owner of the snack bar, a Mr Edwards, rang a couple of days later to ask her to come for an interview the following Saturday.
