39 Program Description

The student will gain hands on experience in the repair and construction of molds, dies and fixtures. Obsolete mold and die steels will be used to instruct proper techniques to weld and repair or construct replacement parts.

New molds and stamping dies will be constructed and tried out in injection machine or stamping press.

Safety, quality and continuous improvement will be stressed.

Patient Care Technician/Medical Assistant

Offered at Middle Tennessee Education Center (MTEC), 200 Dover St., Shelbyville – Days only Mission

The mission of the program is to provide the technical instruction and skills development for the student to become gainfully employed as a patient care technician or a medical assistant,

Nature of the Work

Patient Care Technicians work under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse to assist in the care of medical, surgical, geriatric, pediatric and maternity patients.

Areas of employment include hospitals, long term care facilities, rehabilitation centers and home health care agencies.

Program Description

The curriculum includes classroom study and supervised clinical practice in health care facilities.

The patient care technician student must complete the prescribed program of study and clinical experience and pass both state and national certification exams to become certified as a Nurse Aide, EKG technician,

Phlebotomist and Medical Assistant.

1. Enrollment Application

Complete an enrollment application to attend the College. Applications may be obtained at the College or mailed upon request or on the TCATS website.

2. COMPASS Test

Applicants are encouraged to study for the COMPASS Test. Classes are offered twice a year to help applicants prepare for the test. The COMPASS consists of two sections - Pre-Algebra and Reading. Passing for this program is 30 in Math and 65 in Reading. The cost of the test is $15, payment is required when making appointment. A photo ID is required to take the test. This should be a driver’s license or other photo ID.

3. Acceptance Standards

Acceptance into the program will require a passing score of at least 30% in Math and 65% in Reading and the applications will be taken based upon the date of application. Applicants who have passed the exam will enter on a first come, first served basis.

4. Notification of Status

Applicants will be notified of status in the program approximately one month before the start date.

Note: Upon completion of the program students will take a National Healthcareer Association Certification Exam.

A passing score for the exam will be 70%.

Practical Nursing

(Offered on a full time, day time basis in Shelbyville only) (Offered on a part-time, evening basis in Winchester only.)

Mission

Licensed Practical Nurses work under the direction of a physician or registered nurse to assist in the care of medical, surgical, geriatric, pediatric and maternity patients. Areas of employment include hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, home health care agencies, industries and physician’s offices.

The practical nursing student must complete the prescribed course of study and clinical experience and then pass the state licensure examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

GENERAL APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1. Enrollment Application - Complete an enrollment application to attend the College. Applications may be obtained at the College or mailed upon request. Submit proof of high school completion or GED and make an appointment for the COMPASS test.

2. COMPASS Test - Applicants are encouraged to study for the COMPASS Test. Classes are offered twice a year to help applicants prepare for the test. The COMPASS test consists of pre-algebra and reading. To be eligible, applicants must score a minimum of 50% on the pre-algebra portion and 80% on the reading portion.

The cost of the test is $15, payment is required at the time the appointment is made. A photo ID is required to take the test. This should be a driver’s license or a similar form of ID.

3. Anatomy and Physiology – applicants are required to take and pass Anatomy & Physiology as a pre-requisite. Contact Student Services for a current schedule of classes.

4. Math for Meds – applicants are required to pass Math for Meds as a pre-requisite. Contact Student Services for a current schedule of classes.

5. Practical Nursing Information Session - All applicants who scored a minimum of 50% in Pre-algebra and 80% in reading will be notified for an information session in late May or early June. Attendance is mandatory.

During this session the second application will be distributed along with specific instructions about its completion.

Applicants will meet the Practical Nursing Coordinator and have an opportunity to ask questions about the

program, and there will be someone available to discuss financial aid. Applicants will then be given a deadline for returning the application. Failure to follow the deadline will prevent the applicant from entering the program.

6. Acceptance Standards - Each applicant is evaluated according to COMPASS scores, completion of Anatomy and Physiology and completion of Math for Meds, educational history, work history and reference questionnaires.

Applicants not accepted into the program must re-apply to be considered for future programs.

7. Notification of Status - Applicants will be notified of status in the program approximately one month before the start date.
