Programme development plan 35

In document Total Quality Management (Page 33-96)

The evaluation of the Programme and its implementation strengths and weaknesses, as well as elaboration of the programme development plan is the task of the Programme administration, departments, institutes and the Faculty, which includes analysis of various issues, the learning outcome assessment and planning.

Based on the survey results, the assessment of the current programme and the strengths and weaknesses of its implementation has been performed and these conslusions are shown in Table 11.

Table 11

SWOT analysis of the Study Programme “TotalQuality Management”

Strengths Weaknesses

Students:

• high-quality, modern education;

• good career prospects;

• opportunities to continue their education in the doctoral programme;

• the opportunity for students to influence the study process.

Students:

• students being employed simultaneously with studies because of the financial circumstances;

• lack of motivation and knowledge of foreign languages, which significantly affects the quality of study process. Study process:

• opportunity to influence the study process with the help of feedback;

• good infrastructure and material basis;

• the use of the electronic environment ORTUS in the study process.

Study process:

• research skills are not sufficiently developed;

• several subjects provide mostly theoretical knowledge;

• some teachers’ lecture materials are not fully available.

Academic staff:

• motivated and professionally qualified staff;

• democratic relationships between teachers and students;

• participation in scientific conferences.

Academic staff:

• the age structure of the academic staff;

• insufficient presence of guest lecturers in the implementation of the

programme;

• some teachers’ work schedule is very tight.

Other factors:

• business links with employers and their associations.

Other factors:

• insufficient activity in raising funds from outside.

Opportunities Threats

- students have ample opportunities to study in foreign universities exchange

programmes;

- development of the Programme in cooperation with foreign partners and employers in Latvia;

- Master Thesis topics focused on quality problem solution;

- closer cooperation with employers’ organizations;

- opportunities to offer refresher courses in quality management for companies.

- insufficient state funding; - high tuition fees;

- reduction in the number of potential applicants’ due to the demographic situation.

In relevance with the assessment, the Programme administration in cooperation with the FEEM management plans to maximally minimize the weaknesses. One of the priority tasks of the Faculty and Programme Administration is to improve the age structure of the academic staff by inviting younger teachers.

The most important tasks related to Programme implementation and the Institute for Quality Engineering activity development, and their execution during the past two years are shown in Table 12.

Table 12

The tasks and their realizationduring the past two years

Tasks Task execution

To regularly review and

update the study courses All the study courses are updated, the list of literature is reviewed and the planned learning outcomes are defined. The study subject register and ORTUS data base have been updated.

To improve the internship organization system

The regulations for specialization internship have been revised.

To develop and publish training materials

A number of educational and methodological materials have been developed. Please see section 8.2.

To attract employers to the study process

implementation and development

Master Thesis are advised and reviewed and internship is supervised by industry professionals. To improve materially

technical basis and material resources necessary for the studies

Students learn in well-furnished classrooms at Ezermalas street 6k, which are equipped with the co-financing of the Institute for Quality Engineering. The offices, classrooms, teachers’ room, computer labs have been well-equipped, hardware has been purchased.

To update teaching plans for the semester

Plans for the semester have been revised and corrected, as a result of that all the study courses of Block A have a final assessment – an examination.
