14. Sentence Sense
Time Required
25 minutesPurpose
To provide a vehicle though which learners can work together to solve a problem.Objective(s)
Through a fun small-group activity, the facilitator will be able to:• Energize learners; and
• Provide physical and mental stimulation.
Group Size
Up to twenty-fourProcess
Prior to the start of the learning event, create a sentence handout based on program content, similar to the sample Sentence Sense Handout at the end of this activity.Make two copies of your Sentence Sense Handout and cut each into pieces, as indicated on the handout. Be prepared to give them out during the activ-ity;
In addition to the handout, create a flip-chart page, slide, or transparency with the quote from the handout on it. Do not show this to learners in advance.
When ready to begin, have learners form two equal-sized groups around tables and number them group 1 and group 2.
Give out one piece of one handout to each person in group 1 and one piece from the second handout to each person in group 2. If there are twelve or fewer learners, form a single group. Some people may need to receive two handout pieces.
Explain that each of them has a word of a quote and that their goal is to determine what that quote is within 5 minutes.
Answer any questions they have and indicate that they should begin.
The first group finishing should yell out “DONE!”
Verify that they have the correct interpretation and announce either that the activity is over or that groups should continue.
If one group is successful, show the flip chart, slide, or transparency with the correct quote.
If neither group is successful within 5 minutes, sound a noisemaker, have them take a seat, and show the flip-chart page, slide, or transparency with the complete paragraph on it.
Process Follow-Up
Ask: “What process did you use to solve the problem?”“How was your process successful, or not?”
“How might this process be successfully applied in the workplace?”
“What was the biggest challenge in the activity?”
“How did you overcome the challenge (if they were successful)?”
“What created barriers to your success (if they were not successful)?”
“For those who were successful, at what point did you figure out the pattern of the paragraph?”
Relate the need for teamwork to be successful in this activity to the need for teamwork in the workplace and many other life situations.
Have everyone give a round of applause for their efforts.
Reward successful team members with candy or small prizes.
Option(s)
1. Instead of creating your own handout, use the Sentence Sense Handout provided. If you do this, focus learner attention on concepts such as effectively communicating, teamwork, and problem solving that can tie to a number of session topics; or2. Instead of using the activity as an energizer, use it as an opening ice-breaker in which you have learners form groups, introduce themselves, and then attempt to determine the quote.

15. Brain Teasers
Time Required
10 minutesPurpose
To energize learners and stimulate the brain while providing a brief break from session content.Objective(s)
Through a fun and novel activity, the facilitator will be able to:• Provide a quick mental challenge to learners;
• Energize learners after a period of tedious content;
• Introduce a level of friendly competition to a session; and
• Encourage interpersonal communication.
Group Size
Twenty-fiveProcess
Use this activity to encourage communication and energize learners at the end of a break or lunch.Prior to the start of a session, reproduce the Brain Teasers Handout on paper of various colors.
Prior to learners leaving the room on a break or for lunch, tell them that there will be brain-teaser puzzles on their chairs when they return and that the person who finds the correct answers first before the session starts will win a prize (such techniques can encourage learners to return on time).
Explain that the first person finding all the answers should yell, “Done!”
While learners are gone, place handouts on their chairs.
As learners return from break or lunch, tell them they can begin working on the brain teasers.
Once someone has completed all the puzzles, review answers and reward the successful learner with candy or a small prize.
Share correct answers with the rest of the group.
