SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, LIMITATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
6.7 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH
The present study addresses the paucity of research on the PA levels of PLWHIV in South Africa and especially among university students, who are the future leaders and decision makers in this country. The following recommendations for future studies can be made based on the results of the present study:
There remains a paucity of research on the fitness levels, exercise habits and PA patterns among South Africans living with HIV. In order to address the increasing double burden of disease, further research needs to be done on this population.
While a positive relationship has been found between CD4 count and PA levels, not enough is known about this relationship. Studies addressing this relationship have been hampered by small sample sizes. The results can therefore not be generalised to the greater HIV positive population.
The use of the IPAQ has not been validated for use among PLWHIV and therefore further research needs to be conducted on PA in HIVPS using more accurate measures of PA, like actigraphy.
The different stages of HIV infection are characterised by differing symptoms and the HRQOL is known to change as the disease progresses and as patients are initiated on HAART. Further research needs to be conducted on the PA levels and the subsequent influence on HRQOL among patients at different stages of HIV infection.
