8.7.5 RESOURCE RENEWAL AND UPGRADING PLANS Computers and Computer Access
Conestoga College has implemented a practice of refreshing academic computer labs on a three-year cycle. The most current equipment is scheduled for those programs requiring the greatest computing power due to the nature of the courses and software required. The computer labs with resources that are midstream in their life cycle are scheduled for less demanding software such as word processing and spreadsheet applications. The machines are then transferred to administrative areas to refresh their resources. This assures that the computing resources are assigned at the most appropriate level based on intended use. Software and infrastructure such as servers are dealt with in a similar fashion.
There are four main sources of funding for these resources:
• Student technology fees – These are mandatory fees paid by all post-secondary students and are used exclusively for the upgrading and expansion of student-use computers, software and infrastructure in both scheduled and open access labs. None of these funds are used for operating costs.
• College fundraising – The private sector continues to provide in-kind or cash investments to ensure that graduates have been trained in an appropriate computer environment. As indicated in other sections of this report, the College has an enviable history of private sector support to keep training resources current.
• Government Sponsored projects – Conestoga has been successful in being awarded projects such as Strategic Skills Investment and Rural Job Strategies which augment our computer resources. The College will continue to search out such grants.
• College operating budgets supplement the available funds for renewal and infrastructure.
• Two OIT applied research grants have allowed the college to augment additional needs of equipment and related infrastructure.
tutoring and peer hosts. These services have proven to improve academic achievement and promote personal development. This Department is also the centre for housing accommodation, orientation, transportation, and testing for admissions. Recently, the College was one of eight post-secondary institutions in Ontario to be awarded a multi-year Learning Opportunities Project.

It offers a free career development course prior to the first work session that provides information and personal support with skills identification, resume writing, job search skills and job interview skills.
There are 11 full-time employees in the work term department. A differentiated staffing module is used, from manager to work term advisor to employment officers, to cover a broad range of responsibilities. Services include facilitation of a 16 hour unit for all first year Work Experience work term students, scheduling of employer student interviews, on-site job monitoring and past work term debriefing sessions. For students out of province or out of country, work term monitoring is carried out through teleconference and/or e-mail. Over 500 employer interviews were scheduled during the last year and the College has a database of over 5000 employers. The Health, Safety and Environment Office offers a comprehensive health and safety services for both students and employees.
