Module Content:

The Doctor of Philosophy comprises a thesis based on the research results of an original, approved and supervised research project at NQF level 10, in the field of Chemical Pathology, presented in a form suitable for publication.

Learning Outcomes:

At this level the candidate will acquire graduate level knowledge of research philosophy and research methods in an approved specialized field of Chemical Pathology. The candidate will develop the ability to:

 broaden a systematic understanding of Chemical Pathology and mastery of the skills and methods of research associated with that field

 conceive, design, implement and adapt a substantial process of research with scholarly integrity

 make a contribution through original research in Chemical Pathology that extends the frontier of knowledge by developing a substantial body of work, some of which merits national or international refereed publication

 conduct critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas applicable to Chemical Pathology

 communicate with their peers, the larger scholarly community and with society in general about their areas of expertise

 promote, within academic and professional contexts, technological, social or cultural advancement in a knowledge based society.

Assessment Criteria:

 In the Thesis the graduate must demonstrate a high level of research capability making a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of the discipline and field of Chemical Pathology.

 The graduate work must be of a quality to satisfy peer review and merit publication.

 The degree may be earned through pure discipline-based or multidisciplinary research or applied research.

 A graduate should be able to supervise and evaluate the research of others in the area of Chemical Pathology

Assessment Methods:

On the recommendation of the promoter and the Faculty concerned, the Executive Committee of Senate appoints an assessment panel consisting of the promoter, the co- promoter(s) (if any) as internal assessor(s), and at least two external assessors to evaluate the thesis. (A co-promoter may not act as external assessor). Should the Executive Committee of Senate consider it necessary, it may appoint one additional member, who is not an assessor, to act as chairs of the assessment panel. The title and proposal of a thesis is approved for a period of five years, after which the student may apply to Senate, via the relevant Faculty, for an extension of time.
