6. Summary and Next Steps
6.3 Next Steps
The analyses documented in this report, as well as other analyses being completed concurrently, will inform the consideration of best practice options for the Water Efficiency Master Plan Update, documented in Technical Memo #4. Technical Memo #4 – Best Practices Report will include the following:
Research best practices and program options;
Estimate potential program costs;
Establish evaluation criteria; and,
Evaluate options and recommend short list program options
Included will be an assessment of demand management measures in the CII sector against a variety of sector relevant criteria (e.g. is the payback period less than 2 years?).
Results from all background reports will inform the development of a draft Water Efficiency Master Plan Update Report for consideration by stakeholders and the Region, with the final plan to be completed in early 2014.

APPENDIX B: CII SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
PreambleMy name is XX, and we have been contracted by the Region of Waterloo to get a better understanding of water use and water conservation in the commercial, institutional and industrial sectors. The information collected from these interviews will inform the development of support programs and strategies to help companies/institutions such as yours become even more water efficient in day-to-day operations. **Your name and company/institution will not be identified in any reports summarizing the information we collect. All responses will be treated as confidential.
I’d like to take about 20 minutes of your time to chat about water use and conservation in your company/institution. Is this a good time to chat about these issues? [Will need to have done some research/calls on who the best person is for interview]
Background
1. Please describe briefly the main service or output of your company/institution (what does your company or institution do?)
2. Which activities or features in your day-to-day operations are currently responsible for the majority of your company’s/institution’s water use? (e.g., can probe for things such as machine cooling, rinsing product, clothes washing, shower facilities, toilets, irrigation etc.)
Existing Practices in Water Efficiency
3. Has your company/institution previously engaged in activities to reduce the amount of water you use in your operations or services? (Probe for activities in water cooling, reduction in wastewater, toilet replacements, etc. )
If yes:
What activities have you engaged in? (note which are past, which are current).
What motivated you to engage in those activities?
How do you feel about these activities in terms of their success and ease of carrying them out?
What challenges did/has your company/institution experienced in trying to reduce water use through these activities?
If no: what are the main reasons why you haven’t engaged in any activities to reduce water use to date?
4. How are decisions regarding reducing water use made in your company/institution? Probing questions:
Is there a dedicated staff person such as an environmental manager?
Are there any environmental policies that support water conservation?
Is the person responsible for paying the water bill separate from the person responsible for making decisions about water use?
Technical Memo #2 – Region of Waterloo WEMP Update 42 5. Has your company/institution participated in any Region of Waterloo water efficiency programs
(e.g. Water Efficiency Technology (W.E.T.) program) or received any support or assistance from the Region in the area of water efficiency?
If yes:
Which programs and in what capacity?
Do you feel participating in that program has helped your company/institution?
What other assistance/support has the Region provided (e.g. provision of materials, reports, etc.)?
If no:
Are you aware of any programs offered by the Region or others that help companies such as yours reduce water use? Which ones?
Barriers & Opportunities
6. Which of your day-to-day operations do you feel show the greatest potential for improving water efficiency in your company/organization? How? (could probe for particular approaches here such as gray-water reuse systems, water-energy nexus, outside irrigation use etc.)
7. In which of your day-to-day operations do you feel it would be unlikely that you could reduce water use? Why?
8. What do you think currently limits companies in your sector in Waterloo from engaging in activities that further improve water efficiency?
Future Programs/Support
9. What is your ideal payback period for any investments you make in water efficiency for your company/institution?
10. How can the Region of Waterloo better support companies/institutions such as yours in reducing or making further reductions in water use? (e.g. programs, rebates or incentives, information on
equipment, benchmarks, best practices). Closing
11. Do you have anything else you would like to add about water efficiency at your company/ institution or in the Region of Waterloo general?
