SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 5.1 INTRODUCTION

5.4 SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

Although this study has uncovered the inadequate local economic development strategies, plans and implementations, there are some aspects of the LED which may be further investigated. The following future research suggestions on this topic are outlined:

 A model for integration. There is a need to develop a model for the integration strategy which seeks to include the previously disadvantaged Apartheid areas in the local economic development to benefit the previously disadvantaged citizens who lived in the former Homelands.

 A model for monitoring and evaluation of strategies. When strategies are designed for the local economic development, there is a need to develop a model for the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of such strategies, to avoid deviations. These models should also include strategies to alleviate any form of corruption and scrupulous activities in relation to deviations that may further disadvantage the already previously disadvantaged citizens who previously lived in homelands.

 A model for citizen participation in LEDs. There is a need to further investigate the formulation of the model for LED which will include the citizens’

participation. This should further include the role of businesses and the means to benefit the citizens in previously disadvantaged areas.

 The role played by other government institutions and chapter nine institutions of the Constitution of South Africa. The role played by various government

institutions and the chapter nine institutions of the Constitution of South Africa is inevitable. This participation should be designed to fulfil the intergovernmental relationships and interdependence such that it begins to directly benefit the previously disadvantaged citizens.
