Although not all o f the hypotheses were fu lly supported the findings from this study make an im p o rta n t co n trib u tio n to the understanding o f the origins o f OCD. Specifically this study has contributed to understanding how the influence o f parental and current attachm ent styles on OCD may be m ediated by beliefs about responsibility.
Additionally, this is one o f the first studies to test Salkovskis et al.'s (1999) hypothesised pathways to responsibility by examining parenting as well as current attachm ent in relation to responsibility beliefs. This study's findings th a t low m aternal care and high p rotection are related to responsibility beliefs gives com pelling support to Salkovskis and colleagues pathways suggesting th a t eith e r too little responsibility (overprotection) o r to o much responsibility (lack of) can both give rise to responsibility sensitive beliefs. Furtherm ore,
th e re is potential fo r fu rth e r research to address some o f the m easurem ent and design lim itations by replicating and extending this study in both nonclinical and clinical populations.
