XII. Summary Requirements for Graduate Degrees
Masters Program
30 total credit hours required beyond the B.A.
These 30 credit hours must conform to the following guidelines: 24 credit hours in History courses
o 18 of the 24 credit hours must be at the 500 level (graduate credit for 400 level courses must be approved in advance and documented in the student’s file.)
o 3 credit hours must be HST 591 (research seminar)
o 6 credit hours must be thesis research (HST 599)*
* Students taking the non-thesis option must enroll in 6 credit hours of 592 instead of 599.
Doctoral Program
84 total credit hours required beyond the B.A.
60 credit hours must be in History courses and must meet the following requirements:
o 54 credit hours in residence at ASU
o 54 credit hours must be at the 500 level or above (graduate credit for 400 level courses must be approved in advance and documented in the student’s file. See coordinator for details.)
o 6 credit hours of core courses (U.S. and European majors only)
o 3 credit hours of HST 500 required
12 credit hours of dissertation research (HST 792) is required 12 credit hours of dissertation writing (HST 799) is required Public History Concentration:
3 credit hours of HST 502
2 short courses (1 credit hour each)
3 credit hours of Public History Research Seminar (HST 591), req. or opt. depending on area of emphasis
Students must choose from one of the following six emphases:
o Business: 41 credit hours required
o Community History: 40 credit hours required
o Historic Preservation: 40 credit hours required
o Historical Administration: 37 credit hours required
o Policy Applications (Public Sector): 39 credit hours required
