Tivoli Storage Manager licensing

This chapter focuses on the different features of Tivoli Storage Manager that need licensing to function. Compliance with the Tivoli Storage Manager licensing terms ensures proper system operation.

6.1 Licensed features

The base Tivoli Storage Manager server license supports an unlimited number of administrative clients, enterprise administration, one backup-archive client which can only be installed on the server itself, server to server virtual volume support for primary storage pools, and a selection of removable media devices. You must register additional licenses if you want to add support for any of the following optional licensed features which are not included as part of the base license agreement:

• Additional backup-archive clients. The base Tivoli Storage Manager license supports one backup-archive client

• Network Enabler to support backups of network attached clients

• Extended Device Support

• Open System environment

The following are complementary products of Tivoli Storage Manager requiring Tivoli Storage Manager as an installation pre-requisite and a separate license to use the product. The license must also be registered on the server.

• Tivoli Space Manager

• Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager

• Tivoli Data Protection for Application Clients

The enrolment certificate files for all Tivoli Storage Manager licenses are on the Tivoli Storage Manager installation CD-ROM. You register those licenses you are entitled to by issuing the REGISTER LICENSE command with the name of the enrolment certificate file. Once registered, the licenses are stored internally to the server.

Most licenses are platform specific, so the licenses that are to be purchased will depend on what platform you are run your Tivoli Storage Manager server. For example, if the server is on AIX then you would buy they UNIX specific licenses.

6.2 License compliance

If license terms change (for example, if a new license is defined for the server), the server conducts an audit to determine if the current server configuration conforms to the license terms.

The server also periodically audits compliance with the license terms. The results of this audit are used to check and enforce license terms. If 30 days have elapsed since the previous license audit, the administrator cannot cancel the audit.

If the server uses a licensed feature but the license is not registered, the function fails. When you issue a command associated with an unlicensed feature, Tivoli Storage Manager does not issue a warning message, and the command fails.

6.3 Tivoli Storage Manager Licenses

To obtain licenses for licensed features and complimentary products, you can register the following licenses:

1client.lic

• One additional backup-archive client 5client.lic

• Five additional backup-archive clients 10client.lic

• Ten additional backup-archive clients 50client.lic

• Fifty additional backup-archive clients

The client licenses are registered to the Tivoli Storage Manager Server platform configuration you setup. You do not need to specify which operating system platform each client uses. The client code to be installed on the clients (nodes) is free but the number of licensed nodes is dependent on the number of licenses registered on the server. Tivoli Storage Manager has 1 free client license, so if you buy 50 licenses, then you have a total of 51 client licenses.

network.lic

This is required if you are using a network communication method, for example, TCP/IP to connect to the server.

A network license is not required for the following:

• Administrative client Web interface (HTTP communication method)

• Administrative client GUI or command line access

• The use of a Tivoli or an SNMP receiver

• a client on the same physical system as the Tivoli Storage Manager server using the SHARED MEMORY or NAMED PIPES communication method.

• OpenSystem environment support—this license gives you the ability to back up the Unix System Services portion of OS/390 and also AFS/DFS filesystems where supported.

• License for devices that are recently added to the list of Tivoli Storage Manager devices. See the Tivoli Storage Manager supported devices list at the Web site:http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/adsercli.htmfor the devices which need the Advance Device License.

Tivoli Space Manager (formerly HSM client)

• This complementary product maximizes usage of existing storage resources by transparently migrating data off client hard drives based on size and age criteria to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, leaving only a stub file. When the migrated data is accessed, Tivoli Space Manager transparently migrates the data back onto the local disk from the server.

Licensing this feature enables the Tivoli Storage Manager to support space managed clients. Not all Tivoli Storage Manager clients have a space management function - check on the Tivoli Storage Manager webpage for currently supported clients.

Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager:

• Automatically generates a disaster recovery plan—containing the

information, scripts, and procedures needed to automate restoration—that helps ensure quick recovery of your data after a disaster.

• Automatically manages and tracks the media on which your data is stored—whether onsite, in-transit, or offsite in a vault—so your data is easily located if disaster strikes.

• Includes additional virtual volume support for copy storage pools and server database backups.

Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle

• Enables centralized, on-line, incremental, back-up capabilities, and automated storage management function of Oracle databases using the Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU) or Oracle8 Recovery Manager (RMAN).

informix.lic

Tivoli Data Protection for Informix

• Enables backup and restore of Informix databases and logical logs. It uses the Informix On-Bar utility to perform the operations.

sapr3.lic

Tivoli Data Protection for R/3

• Enables data backup and recoveryof R/3 databases from SAP.

mssql.lic

Tivoli Data Protection for MS SQL Server

• Enables centralized complete and incremental online backup of SQL Server databases with Tivoli Storage Manager. The utilities provide full online backup and restore of all databases and transaction logs.

msexch.lic

Tivoli Data Protection for MS Exchange

• centralized online full, copy, incremental, and differential backups of Exchange Directory and Information Stores.

lnotes.lic

Tivoli Data Protection for Lotus Notes

• Enables centralized, on-line, incremental backup of the complex logical structure of Lotus Notes databases.

domino.lic

Tivoli Data Protection of Lotus Domino

• Enables Lotus certified online backups, restore and archive of Lotus Domino R5 Server databases and transaction logs.
