Registering your computer

When you register your computer, information is entered into a database, which enables Lenovo to contact you in case of a recall or other severe problem. In addition, some locations offer extended privileges and services to registered users.

When you register your computer with Lenovo, you also will receive the following benefits:

• Quicker service when you call Lenovo for help

• Automatic notification of free software and special promotional offers To register your computer with Lenovo, do one of the following:

• Go to http://www.lenovo.com/register and follow the instructions on the screen to register your computer.

• Connect your computer to the Internet and register your computer through a preinstalled registration program by opening the Lenovo Support program. Then click Registration and follow the instructions on the screen to register your computer.

How to use the battery power more effectively?

• To conserve power, or to suspend operation without exiting applications or saving files, see “Power-saving modes” on page 35.

• To achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, create and apply power plans.

See “Managing the battery power” on page 35.

Concerned about security or need to securely dispose of data stored on your hard disk drive or solid-state drive?

• Study Chapter 4 “Security” on page 47 to find out how you can protect your computer from theft and unauthorized use.

• Use the Password Manager program to protect the data stored on your computer. For details, see the help information system of the program.

Using the tablet buttons

This topic provides instructions on how to use the tablet buttons.

Your computer has a row of buttons with which you can control your computer, without the use of the keyboard.

Note: Your computer might look slightly different from the illustration in this topic.

1 Power button: Press it to turn on the computer.

2 Speaker volume up button: Press it to increase the speaker volume.

3 Speaker volume down button: Press it to decrease the speaker volume.

4 Screen rotation lock button: Press it to lock the screen rotation function.

5 Windows button: Press it to switch between the current workspace and the Start screen; or to wake up the computer from sleep mode.

Using the Tablet Digitizer Pen

Some models are equipped with a Tablet Digitizer Pen as a standard feature. The Tablet Digitizer Pen enables you to input text in a natural manner, as well as taking notes, annotating Portable Document Format (PDF) files, and drawing graphics together with applications capable of editing and sketching.

Notes:

• This pen is not waterproof. Take care not to soak it or dip it in water.

• Your computer might look slightly different from the illustrations in this topic.

You can store the pen in the slot on the right side of the computer. Push the pen gently into the slot until you hear a click.

To remove the pen from the slot, slide the tab of pen to the right side slightly, and then pull the pen out as shown in the following illustration.

The Tablet Digitizer Pen consists of a tip 2 and a click button 3. Hold the pen and point the tip at the display to move the pointer 1.

To make a selection (single click), tap the display once with the pen. To double-click, tap twice without pausing. To right-click, tap and hold the tip of the pen on the display for one second and then release the pen; or press and hold the click button 3 and tap the tip on the display.

Using the multi-touch screen

This topic provides instructions on how to use the multi-touch screen that is available on some models.

Tap

Tap on the screen with your fingertip to launch an application, select an item, or open a menu.

Press and hold

Press and hold an item or a blank area on the screen for a few seconds to open a menu with more options.

Drag

Tap and hold your finger on an item, such as an image or an icon on the screen, then pull the item along with your finger to the desired location.

Swipe or slide

Move your finger horizontally on the screen to scroll through Web pages, lists, picture thumbnails, and so on.

Zoom in or zoom out

Move two fingers closer together on the screen to zoom out, or move two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in.

Rotate

Put two or more fingers on an item, and then rotate your fingers. This operation enables you to rotate the item that you selected in the direction as you move your fingers.

Double tap

For some applications, quickly tap twice on the screen to zoom in. Double-tap again to zoom out.

Windows 8.1 touch gestures and mouse actions

The following table lists the touch gestures and mouse actions supported by the Window 8.1 operating system.

Swipe in from the right edge. Move the cursor to the bottom-right or top-right corner of your screen.

To display the open applications and switch applications

Swipe in from the left edge. Move the cursor to the upper-left corner of your screen, and then click the desired application.

Swipe in and out on the left edge. Move the cursor to the upper-left corner of your screen, and then move it downward.

To view all applications on the Start screen

Swipe up to the top edge. Click the downward arrow ( ) on the Start screen.

To enlarge or reduce the size of an icon, remove an icon from the Start screen, or remove an application

• Swipe in from the top or bottom edge,

tap Customize, and then tap the desired icon.

• Press and hold the desired icon.

• Right-click a blank area on the Start screen, click Customize, and then click the desired icon.

• Right-click the desired icon.

To view the application commands on an open application, such as Copy, Save, and Delete, depending on the applications

Swipe in from the top or bottom edge. Right-click an open application.

To close the current application Swipe in from the top edge to the bottom.

Click the top of the application, and then drag it to the bottom of your screen.

To scroll through items, such as lists, pages, and photos

Click, hold, and drag an item.

To zoom out Move two fingers closer together. Press the Ctrl key while scrolling the mouse wheel backward.

To zoom in Move two fingers farther apart. Press the Ctrl key while scrolling the mouse wheel forward.

To rotate an item Put two or more fingers on an item, and then rotate your fingers (supported only on some models).

If the application supports rotation, click the rotation icon.

Operating modes

This section provides information about the operating modes of your computer. Your computer provides the notebook mode, stand mode, tablet mode, and tent mode that enable you to work more conveniently in your working environment.

Rotating the computer display

This topic provides instructions on how to rotate the computer display properly. This topic also provides information on the operating modes of your computer and corresponding display angle ranges.

The computer display can be opened to any angle up to 360 degrees as shown in the following illustration.

Attention: Do not rotate the computer display with too much force, otherwise the computer display or hinges might be damaged. Do not apply too much force to the upper-right or upper-left corner of the computer display.

Display angle for each operating mode

The angle between the front of the computer display and the keyboard is different in each operating mode, and the following table lists the angle range for each operating mode.

Notebook mode

This section provides information about notebook mode. You can use the computer in notebook mode in scenarios that require using a keyboard and a mouse, such as editing documents and writing e-mails.

Open the computer display slowly as shown in the following illustration. Your computer is now in notebook mode.

In notebook mode, the keyboard, the ThinkPad trackpad, and the TrackPoint pointing stick are automatically enabled.

By default, the autorotate feature is enabled. To avoid undesired screen rotation, press the screen rotation lock button to disable the autorotate feature. For instructions on how to use the button, refer to “Using the tablet buttons” on page 17. After you press the screen rotation lock button, the autorotate feature is disabled and the autorotate-off indicator is displayed on your screen.

Stand mode

This section provides information about stand mode. You can use the computer in stand mode in scenarios that require limited interaction with the screen, such as viewing photos and playing videos.

If your computer is in notebook mode, do the following to turn the computer into stand mode:

1. Slowly rotate the display clockwise until the back of the display is facing the base cover.

2. Position your computer as shown. Your computer is now in stand mode.

In stand mode, the keyboard, the ThinkPad trackpad, and the TrackPoint pointing stick are automatically disabled.

In stand mode, you can use the tablet buttons to control your computer. For instructions on how to use the tablet buttons, refer to “Using the tablet buttons” on page 17.

Tablet mode

This section provides information about tablet mode. You can use the computer in tablet mode in scenarios that require frequent interaction with the screen, such as browsing the Web site and watching movies.

If your computer is in stand mode, do the following to turn the computer into tablet mode from stand mode:

1. Position your computer as shown and slowly rotate the computer display clockwise.

2. Position your computer as shown. Your computer is now in tablet mode. By default, the autorotate feature is enabled.

3. To avoid undesired screen rotation in tablet mode, press the screen rotation lock button to disable the autorotate feature. For instructions on how to use the button, refer to “Using the tablet buttons”

on page 17.

Note: After you press the screen rotation lock button, the autorotate feature is disabled and the autorotate-off indicator is displayed on your screen.

In tablet mode, the keyboard, the ThinkPad trackpad, and the TrackPoint pointing stick are automatically disabled.

In tablet mode, you can use your computer in a creative and intuitive way by jotting down notes and illustrations with the Tablet Digitizer Pen and then storing them digitally. For instructions on how to use the Tablet Digitizer Pen, refer to “Using the Tablet Digitizer Pen” on page 17.

You can use the tablet buttons to control your computer. For instructions on how to use the tablet buttons, refer to “Using the tablet buttons” on page 17.

Your computer comes with a multi-touch screen. For instructions on how to use the multi-touch screen, refer to “Using the multi-touch screen” on page 18.

Tips on using your computer in tablet mode

• Do not pick up or hold the computer by the display only.

• Do not hit, vibrate, or bump the computer display.

• To allow free ventilation, do not place any obstacle, such as a thick-piled carpet or a soft cushion, in front of the fan louvers.

• If you hold the computer with one hand while using it in tablet mode, do not expose it to excessive vibration, shock, or rotation.

• When using computer outdoors, protect against exposure to rain or moisture.

• If you put your computer in a carrying case, put it into notebook mode and close the display.

Tent mode

This section provides instructions about tent mode. You can use the computer in tent mode in scenarios that require limited interaction with the screen, such as viewing photos and making a presentation.

Turning the computer into tent mode from tablet mode

If your computer is in tablet mode, do the following to turn the computer into tent mode:

1. Slowly open your computer display several inches. The screen rotates to the orientation for you to look at in stand mode.

2. Position your computer as shown. Your computer is now in tent mode.

In tent mode, the keyboard, the ThinkPad trackpad, and the TrackPoint pointing stick are automatically disabled.

In tent mode, you can use the tablet buttons to control your computer. For instructions on how to use the tablet buttons, refer to “Using the tablet buttons” on page 17. Your computer comes with a multi-touch screen. For instructions on how to use the multi-touch screen in tablet mode, refer to “Using the multi-touch screen” on page 18.
