National Oilwell provides Drilling Modules for all offshore applications including drillships, semi-submersibles, caisson structures, barges, jackups and fixed platforms.

Derricks and masts are available for applications with top drives and guide rails to resist wind loads.

Our Dreco line of derricks and masts, as well as complete rigs can be furnished to meet requirements of regulatory groups including ABS, DNV, Lloyds and the Dutch Staatstoezicht. Material traceability, data books, quality assurance programs, etc. are available to meet the most stringent requirements.

National Oilwell engineers are familiar with special design requirements imposed by automatic pipe and subsea B.O.P. handling systems, motion compensating devices and riser tensioning systems.

These engineers have developed a variety of rig mechanization components and systems, such as complete rig skidding that facilitates movement from a centrally located remote control station. These components are integrated in the complete drilling module to minimize weight while improving operator safety. Packages utilize a modular design concept that allows assembly using the platform cranes which substantially reduces the risk and cost during installation. The modular concept can also be designed to facilitate a one-piece single lift of the assembled modules onto the platform in the event a heavy lift crane is available.

National Oilwell is a leader in the development of offshore workover rigs. These units are designed to be used for completion in conjunction with a drilling rig or by themselves as a workover rig. They are of modular construction and load weights are designed for the capacity of the cranes on the platform.

Platform well to well moves average one to two hours. This includes moving the rig (15 minutes), killing the well and nippling up. Platform to platform moves average three and one half days.

National Oilwell is the world leader for innovative land based rig packages with designs pioneered to include highly mobile slim hole drilling rigs, single module pad drilling rigs for the north slope of Alaska, mechanized rigs, modular desert rigs, track-mounted swamp rigs and helicopter transportable rigs.

National Oilwell has the experience and capabilities to design and fabricate advanced rig packages for any climate or terrain conditions, considering different parameters.

Semi-automated drilling rigs

Sandmaster self-propelled rig

A free standing mast – no guy lines.

All wheel drive.

A B.O.P./wellhead handling system – integral with the substructure.

No rig ramp is required.

Levelling and alignment problems are eliminated through use of the free standing mast and integral substructure.

Safe and easy rig-up. National Oilwell is a leader in the desert with several “firsts” in rig

design and desert moving systems such as our Sandmaster rigs. Sandmasters are successfully operating in the desert of North Africa.

The rigs boast the following features:

An integral substructure – open on three sides.

An integral hydraulic system – no hydraulic hoses have to be disconnected including hydraulic B.O.P. lines.

An integral mud pump – mounted on the carrier deck.

Both the accumulator and choke manifold are mounted on the

carrier deck.

Highly mobile semi-automated desert rig

National Oilwell has successfully met the challenges of the Arctic, both offshore and onshore. With over 25 years in playing a leader- ship role in cold weather rig design, and with a wealth of experience and knowledge ranging from the development of year-round offshore cold weather drilling, to the creation of completely self- contained, highly mobile onshore drilling systems. Any challange can be met.

Some major concerns when developing an arctic drilling or production rig are: the environment; limited space availability; storage of consumable supplies; mobility; operational safety; automation and the high costs of fuel.

The rig design permits pad to pad moves with a minimum of outside work in severe arctic conditions.

To date, National Oilwell has developed and provided the most efficient rigs on the north slope of Alaska.

Complete turnkey rig-up and project management services can be offered. All major projects are completely assembled, mechanically completed and commissioned at our facilities to avoid costly delays to the client. Project management and multi-facility manufacturing gives National Oilwell the ability to accelerate delivery schedules and reduce costs.
