questionsof interest whichhad
been broughtforward.The
formationsofullydescribedbytheauthorofthe paper had frequently been brought under the notice of theFellowsin formeryears, and,among
othersby onewhose
presenceat theirmeetingswould
long be missed, thelateMr.Morton
Allport,who
was
intimately acquaintedMaththesurroundingdistrict; but thesehad
been chieflyconversational discussions, of
which
norecordhad
been preserved,and
the Societywas
greatlyindebted to Mr. Johnstonfor having presented inaconcreteform somuch
interestingmatterforfuture studyand
con-sideration.He
(Mr. Stephens)was
inclined to regard the tertiary deposits in the lowerpart of theDerwent
basin ratheras ofestuariue and fluviatile origin, with landsprings,which
he thought werethe chief agentsintheformationofthe beds of travertin at Risdon,and
in the suburbs of Hobart,and
by
the process which is still going on in the formation of similar deposits in various parts of the island. Of the existence of a series of lakes in past times, farup
the valley oftheDerwent,which had
beensuccessivelydrainedby
erosion,and
had exposed the remains of tertiary beds in the ancient valleys, therecouldbe nodoubt. These lakes indeed belongedto a later age, but therewas
nothing at presentknown
which could invalidate the general conclusion so carefully statedby Mr. Johnston.A
vote of thanks to His Excellency for hisopeningaddress,and
to the authorsof the papers read, as well asto the various contributors to theMuseum,
closed the proceedingsof the meeting.MAY,

Mr. R. M. Johnston hopedthat thelocal collectors inTasmaniawoidd furtherthe objectofthe learned phytologist. It was very desirable that the natural historyoftheCryptogams of Australiashould be brought

to the same state of perfection as the other divisions of the " Flora Anstraliensis." Mr. Bentharacommittedthe completion of this onerous task to the illustrious Baron, and he(Mr. Johnston)wasglad that there wasnow
a probabilityofitsbeing carriedout.Mr. Stephensread notes on a species ofEucalyptus (E. hcemastoma), not hitherto recordedinthe Floraof Tasmania, with itsidentification
by
Baron vonMueller. This tree is
commonly
known
as theGum-topped
Stringy Bark.Mr.
Johnston
wasglad that Mr.Stephenshad devoted his attention so closely tothestudyofour Eucalypts, for it was only by a close special study ofsome
particular family or group thatwe
couldnow
hope to improve or addto our existing knowledge.The
properclassification of the Eucalyptiisa very difE.cult matter, and the exact determination of closely allied species is rendered stillmore
perplexing on accountofthe extreme variability due to local environments. Mr. Johnston gave an instance ofthis variabilityby
reference to E. amygdallnaas itgrowsin theDomain,incomparison with the same species asitgrowson thehillsaroundLaunceston,

Stringy Barkwasknown
tobeofa very superior quality—
infact, second only to thatoftheBlueGum

and alwayscommanded
areadysale inthe market.The wood
waseasilydistinguishedfromthat of theSwamp
Gum
by
the greater firmnessofitsgrain.vu
diflferentgrain,whichmore nearlyresembledthatof bluegum. Itwasa
close,heavytimber, remarkablyclear and free from knots, which, inde-pendentof thecolour, distinguished itfromblue
gum,
that otherwise itmostresembled, Mr,Grant had notobserved thetreegrowing, or noticed
its
wood
in any large quantity, in the Midland districts, and,therefore, as it wascommon
aboutthe highlands,hethought itprobablypreferred amorehumid
atmosphere thanobtained in the interior of the country along the course of therailway. There wasalsoanotherapparentvariety which hehad heardcalled" celery-topped" gum, but which was probablya slightlymodified form ofthegum-toppedstringy bark,sinceitfrequented thesamehabitats.The

Auriferous Countryand Guld-bearing Rocks."Mr. Stephenssaidthatthe paper which had just been read indicated
much
thoughtful study on the partofthe author,who
evidently took a livelyinterest in hissubject.He
didnotquiteunderstand whetherthe authorintended tomean
that the views which he expressed as to the surfaceindications ofthe presenceof goldweretobe taken as universally applicable ; but itwould be improperto attempt to discuss in detaila paper covering such a wide range afteronly hearing itonce read, and hewouldonlyventure to criticise one pointwhich wastooimportantto be passed withoutnotice.
The
relations of intrusive rocks, especially thoseof granitoid character, to the primarystrata had furnishedmatter forinnumerablepamphletsandpapers; butitmight be sufficient to saythat although the granite was often found as a disturbing element in Silurian districts, itwas clearly proved to have formed no part of the agencies which had produced those remarkable flexures andcontortions whicharespecial characteristics of the primary rocksall over the world, and which were attributable to forces operating on a
much
widerscale.This question,however,wouldinitselffurnishmatterforalengthy paper. Mr.Johnston complimentedDr.Barnard onthe very interesting sketch hehadgivenofthewonderful resultsproduced by the discovery ofgold in Australia,',and
upon
the very faithful picture he had given of theprincipal features of gold-bearing rocks and drifts. Only in regard to someof theminorpoints,touched uponincidentally, could he desire to offeranyadditional
comment
in theway
of qualification.With
respect totheeffect produced by intrusive rocks, Mr, Johnston inclined to the viewtakenby
Mr, Stephens,viz.,that only to atrifling extent could the disturbed conditionof the auriferous rocks be attributedtotheimmediate influence of theintruded rocks, Mr. Johnston statedthat Mr. Mallet's theorywas
best in accordwithfacts. Mr. Mallet attributes the crushing and crumpling of the surface rocks principally to the secular cooling of the earth, together with gravitation.The
cooling of the earth, at a greaterrate near thesurface,must
havecausedatfirstviolentcontraction, andconsequently violentrifts, crumplings,and local heat.To
