Eurostat hat die Aufgabe, den
Informa-tionsbedarf der Kommission und aller am
Aufbau des Binnenmarktes Beteiligten
mit Hilfe des europäischen statistischen
Systems zu decken.
Um der Öffentlichkeit die große Menge an
verfügbaren Daten zugänglich zu machen
und Benutzern die Orientierung zu
erleichtern, werden zwei Arten von
Publi-kationen angeboten: Statistische
Statistische
Dokumente unterscheiden sich auch
optisch von anderen Veröffentlichungen
durch den mit einer stilisierten Graphik
versehenen weißen Einband.
Veröffentlichungen wenden sich an eine
ganz bestimmte Zielgruppe, wie zum
Beispiel an den Bildungsbereich oder an
Entscheidungsträger in Politik und
Ver-waltung. Sie enthalten ausgewählte und
auf die Bedürfnisse einer Zielgruppe
abgestellte und kommentierte
Informa-tionen. Eurostat übernimmt hier also eine
Art Beraterrolle.

It is Eurostat's responsibility to use the
European statistical system to meet the
requirements of the Commission and all
parties involved in the development of the
single market.
To ensure that the vast quantity of
ac-cessible data is made widely available,
and to help each user make proper use of
this information, Eurostat has set up two
main categories of document: statistical
documents and publications.
The statistical document is aimed at
spe-cialists and provides the most complete
sets of data: reference data where the
methodology is well-established,
stand-ardized, uniform and scientific. These
data are presented in great detail. The
statistical document is intended for
ex-perts who are capable of using their own
means to seek out what they require. The
information is provided on paper and/or
on diskette, magnetic tape, CD-ROM. The
white cover sheet bears a stylized motif
which distinguishes the statistical
docu-ment from other publications.
The publications proper tend to be
com-piled for a well-defined and targeted
public, such as educational circles or
political and administrative
decision-makers. The information in these
docu-ments is selected, sorted and annotated
to suit the target public. In this instance,
therefore, Eurostat works in an advisory
capacity.
Where the readership is wider and less
well-defined, Eurostat provides the
infor-mation required for an initial analysis,
such as yearbooks and periodicals which
contain data permitting more in-depth
studies. These publications are available
on paper or in videotext databases.
To help the user focus his research,
Eurostat has created 'themes', i.e. subject
Pour établir, évaluer ou apprécier les

d'infor-mations.
Eurostat a pour mission, à travers le
sys-tème statistique européen, de répondre
aux besoins de la Commission et de
l'en-semble des personnes impliquées dans
le développement du marché unique.
Pour mettre à la disposition de tous
l'im-portante quantité de données accessibles
et faire en sorte que chacun puisse
s'orienter correctement dans cet
ensem-ble, deux grandes catégories de
docu-ments ont été créées: les docudocu-ments
statistiques et les publications.
Le document statistique s'adresse aux
spécialistes. Il fournit les données les plus
complètes: données de référence où la
méthodologie est bien connue,
standar-disée, normalisée et scientifique. Ces
données sont présentées à un niveau très
détaillé. Le document statistique est
des-tiné aux experts capables de rechercher,
par leurs propres moyens, les données
requises. Les informations sont alors
disponibles sur papier et/ou sur disquette,
bande magnétique, CD-ROM. La
couver-ture blanche ornée d'un graphisme stylisé
démarque le document statistique des
autres publications.
Les publications proprement dites
peu-vent, elles, être réalisées pour un public
bien déterminé, ciblé, par exemple
l'enseignement ou les décideurs
politi-ques ou administratifs. Des informations
sélectionnées, triées et commentées en
fonction de ce public lui sont apportées.
Eurostat joue, dès lors, le rôle de
conseil-ler.

Dienstleistungsbereich. Diese Daten werden in Ecu und
in Kauftkraftstandards (KKS) umgerechnet, was einen
unmittelbaren Vergleich der Verdienstsniveaus in den
einzelnen Mitgliedstaaten ermöglicht (siehe Erläuterung
zu Tabelle 1/1 /c).
Die Ergebnisse der Statistiken werden ferner in
aus-führlicher Darstellung nach Mitgliedstaaten (B, D, I, NL,

INTRODUCTION
This publication, issued regularly by the Statistical Office
of the European Communities, gives detailed results of
the harmonized statistics on the earnings of manual and
non-manual workers in industry and certain activity
groups in the services sector.
The description of the methods and definitions,
necess-ary for the interpretation of these statistics, as well as the
methodology of the national surveys on which the
har-monised statistics of the earnings published by Eurostat
in 1992 are outlined in: Harmonised statistics of e a r n i n
-gs, methodology of national surveys.
With the publication of this methodology, Eurostat aims
to make accessible the methods used in the national
surveys, thus allowing a better evaluation of the
com-parability of the published data.
The harmonized statistics of earnings provide
informa-tion on the hourly gross amounts actually paid to
indus-trial manual workers and the gross monthly earnings of
non-manual workers in industry and services (wholesale
and retail distribution, credit institutions and insurance,
hotels and catering, transports and communications).
The data are broken down according to NACE (General
industrial classification of economic activities within the
European Communities); they include all two-digit
head-ings plus a number of more detailed subdivisions agreed
by the countries.
Short-term trends in the various countries can therefore
be compared on the same basis from this information.
The publication also gives the hourly earnings of manual
workers in industry and the monthly earnings of
non-ma-nual workers in industry and in services converted into
ecus and purchasing power standards (PPS) for major
groups of economic activities; this means that the level
of earnings in the various countries can be compared
directly (see explanatory note to Table l/1/c).
The results of the statistics are given in detail by country
and, for some countries (B, D, I, NL, UK), by region.
Tables 1/1 to I/4 cover the gross hourly earnings of
industrial manual workers. The gross monthly earnings
of non-manual workers in industry are given in Tables
11/1 to II/3. Tables 111/1 to Ml/3 show the gross monthly
earnings of non-manual workers in services.

New data for Germany
In this volume Eurostat is publishing data on the earnings of manual and non-manual workers in the Federal Republic of
Germany, including West-Berlin, as constituted prior to 3 October 1990, as well as - alongside the regional data for that
territory - data on the earnings of manual workers for the new Landers, including East Berlin.
The data on the earnings of non-manual workers for the new Landers, including East Berlin, have not been included in this
publication but are available in Eurostats databases.
Methodological changes in the Netherlands
From 1991 onwards, the data concerning employees who are covered by the law on the employment of physically or mentally
disabled persons are also taken into account.
The Dutch survey (Jaarlijks Onderzoek naar Werkgelegenheid en Lonen) comprises an employment section (covering
70 000 enterprises) and an earnings section (20 000 enterprises).
Formerly, the statistics concerning earnings were exclusively based on the results of the earnings section. In the new
methodology, the earnings sections results are weighted according to the more precise employment-information from the
employment section and the Labour Accounts (Arbeidsrekeningen). The data published here for 1991 and 1992 follow the
new methodology.
Revised series for United Kingdom
The annual October survey of the earnings of manual employees in United Kingdom has been discontinued. This survey,
conducted by the Department of Employment, has been the traditional source of data on hourly earnings of manual workers
in United Kingdom for Eurostat's harmonized statistics of earnings. From 1991 onwards figures will be taken from the results
of the April New Earnings Survey (NES).
Data
in NACE Rev. 1
Several countries, from the reference period October 1994 on, have begun to transmit the data in NACE Rev. 1. This
corresponds to a request made by Eurostat. Seeing as the majority of countries have continued to use NACE 70 for the
transmission of data, Eurostat has, this year, decided to publish the results of these statistics once more in NACE 70. The
United Kingdom data were collected using NACE Rev.1 and were transmitted to Eurostat in this form alongside an
approximation to NACE 70. Eurostat is presenting the results for France and the Netherlands in NACE 70 after having
proceeded towards a method of conversion between the two classifications, with the agreement of these countries.
Eurostat is, therefore, indicating that the data presented for France (October 1994 and April 1995), for The Netherlands
(October 1994) and for United Kingdom (April 1994 to April 1995) may not be completely comparable with previous years
and must be treated with caution. Some footnotes in the respective tables indicate the principal problems as regards
comparability.

INTRODUCTION
A v e r t i s s e m e n t s :
