Every school in California is required by st at e law t o publish a School Account abilit y Report Card (SARC), by February 1 of each year. T he SARC cont ains informat ion about t he condit ion and performance of each California public school. Under t he Local Cont rol Funding Formula (LCFF) all local educat ional agencies (LEAs) are required t o prepare a Local Cont rol Account abilit y Plan (LCAP), w hich describes how t hey int end t o meet annual school-specific goals for all pupils, w it h specific act ivit ies t o address st at e and local priorit ies. Sonoma Count y Office of Educat ion (SCOE) Alt ernat ive Educat ion Program provides K-12 educat ion for st udent s w ho are seriously at risk of school and/or societ al failure. T he t w o program schools are Alt ernat ive Educat ion (Communit y School) and Court School. Alt ernat ive Ed/Communit y School also includes Home St udy, Independent St udy, and t he T een Parent Program (formerly Cal-SAFE/California School Age Families). T he Alt ernat ive Ed/Communit y School Program provides academic inst ruct ion for st udent s w ho are referred, w ho self-select , or w ho benefit from a program based on alt ernat ive inst ruct ional st rat egies.
Communit y School sit es are locat ed in Sant a Rosa and Pet aluma, and an Independent St udy/Home St udy Learning Cent er is locat ed in Rohnert Park. T he emphasis of t he program is t o reest ablish t he educat ional direct ion of st udent s and t o t ransit ion t hem t o a regular school set t ing or ot herw ise serve t hem in a learning environment t hat meet s t heir needs.Counseling and ot her support services are provided by public and communit y agencies. :Clean and sober: services w it hin t he Communit y School Program provides a safe and support ive environment for st udent s w ho are st ruggling w it h recovery from drug and alcohol abuse and w ho need t o change t heir environment t o be successful. Requirement s include a commit ment t o sobriet y, on-sit e counseling, random drug t est ing, posit ive out side-of-school act ivit y and parent al involvement in counseling.
Independent St udy is anot her opt ion available t o Communit y School st udent s w ho have specific educat ional needs, w ork int erest s, personal issues and/or family obligat ions t hat preclude success in a daily classroom set t ing.
Home St udy is a volunt ary program t hat provides alt ernat ive K-12 public educat ion for families w ho prefer, for many diverse reasons, home schooling as a means of meet ing t he academic needs of t heir children. T he program is built around an independent st udy model aut horized by t he California Depart ment of Educat ion and w as aw arded a Program Excellence Aw ard in May 2003.
T he T een Parent Program provides educat ion and support services assist ing pregnant and parent ing st udent s in graduat ing from high school. Support services include preparat ion for childbirt h and parent ing, infant /t oddler development , food and nut rit ion, t ransport at ion, vocat ional guidance, and bilingual child care as w ell as referrals for ot her services.
SCOE’s Alt ernat ive Educat ion Program is W ASC accredit ed and provides st andards-based curriculum in t he core subject areas of English/language art s, mat hemat ics, hist ory/social science, and science. T he program's int ent is for st udent s t o change behaviors necessary for successful reint egrat ion int o dist rict schools, t o earn credit t ow ards graduat ion, and t o pass t he California High School Exit Exam.

T he Alt ernat ive Educat ion Program has classrooms locat ed in SCOE-ow ned facilit ies. Over t he past several years, classrooms have been clust ered t o provide improved facilit ies and safet y and t he opening of a new facilit y in August 2011 allow ed t he program t o move out of all st orefront s t hat w ere previously being used. Considerable effort is put in t o ensure t hat all facilit ies are w ell-maint ained. Groundbreakings w ere held in Oct ober and November 2003 for t he first SCOE-ow ned Communit y School sit es t o be built w it h school facilit ies funds. Const ruct ion of anot her Communit y School facilit y in Sout hw est Sant a Rosa w as st art ed in t he 2010-11 school year and t hat facilit y opened t o st udent s in August 2011. In recent years, t he primary area of focus for st aff development has been t o increase st udent engagement and achievement t hrough improved t eaching pract ices and increased academic rigor. In t he 2013-14 school year t he depart ment offered one full day of professional development prior t o t he st art of t he school year and at least four hours each mont h w ere dedicat ed t o st aff and professional development . Addit ionally, t hree t eachers part icipat ed in ongoing professional development t hrough t he Leadership Net w ork - an ongoing collaborat ive effort dedicat ed t o t he st udy and implement at ion of research-based st rat egies t o improve st udent achievement and narrow t he achievement gap. T eachers are support ed t hroughout t he school year via adminst rat or feedback and support peer support t hrough t he professional learning communit y model. Office st aff also part icipat ed in CALPADS t rainigs and t ranings relat ed t o t he st udent informat ion syst em.
