WHO ARE WE?

David Pluck is an independent chain of bookmakers that was established in 1980. We are among the top ten Bookmakers in the UK and we are constantly expanding our chain of shops. We have over 35 licences across the North West covering Warrington, Ormskirk, Southport, Preston, West Kirby, Wirral, Ellesmere Port, Liverpool, Manchester and Widnes. As we are an independent firm we pride ourselves in our personal service to our employees. We have created over 100 permanent jobs in the North West region and plan to go on to generate even more.

THE JOB

We have various cashiers positions available in our branches. As a cashier you will provide a front line service to customers; accepting bets, operating our computerised betting system and paying out winnings.

We are looking for people who know their way around the computer keyboard, although all necessary training will be provided. Cashiers assist the manager by the helping with the marketing of the shop and by ensuring that our customers receive a personal, high quality service.

The hours worked are flexible and hours of work can range from 35 hours to 5 hours per week to suit the individual’s needs. Our shops are open 7 days a week (including Bank Holidays). We are open evenings to cover Night Racing, all year round (please refer to wage table enclosed).

WHAT CAN WE OFFER YOU?

Training: We have a comprehensive training programme and we have achieved the prestigious “Investor In People” standard as recognition of our excellence in this area. We were the first bookmakers in the country to be awarded this standard. What this achievement means for our

employees is that we are committed to training our staff to the highest possible level. We are constantly reassessed to ensure that we are maintaining our superior level of practise.

Promotion: We encourage you to undertake training to advance your career. All staff are now taken on as Deputy Managers. This is a person who is qualified to manage the shop in the absence of the regular manager. This is the first step towards full management. Many of our Shop Managers started with us as Deputy Managers.

Pay: Our rate of pay is very competitive (see below). These rates are reviewed annually in April. Staff are being paid weekly and receive an itemised pay slip detailing year to date earnings, tax deductions and national insurance contributions, etc. Deputy Manager Basic (per hr) Overtime (per hr) When Cashiering £6.55 £8.73 When Managing £7.60 £10.13

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Flexibility: We require our staff to be adaptable in order for us to staff our chain of shops, although we aim to place you at a shop that is close to your home. Teamwork is keys and staff are expected to cover for each other’s absences at short notice.

Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old by law.

Numerate: You must have a reasonable level of basic numeric skills. A numbers test has been enclosed for you to complete at home.

Computer: All our betting shops now use the Slip Capture System which is a computerised method of capturing betting slips. All our staff are required to be competent keyboard operators, though training is provided.

Communication Skills: It is vitally important that you are good at dealing with people. Most of your day will involve serving the general public, taking their bets and paying out winnings.

Handling Cash: You must feel comfortable handling money. Training will be given so that you are aware of security procedures when dealing with cash.

ARITHMETIC SELF TEST

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE TEST:

This test is for your benefit. If you complete it properly: in 10 minutes and without a calculator, you will get a good idea of what your level of numeracy is. If you are invited for an interview you will have to complete a second test. Therefore there is no point in cheating on the home test because you will be found out! We require that you score at least 5/10 and the answers have been enclosed so that you can mark the test yourself. We require our cashiers to be more competent on the computer systems than numerically minded simply because our computer system works out the money to be handed to the client for us, so that cashiers only need to work out the change required from the money tendered by the client.
