The Index mode

Each dictionary opens in the Index mode: this is a quick search among entries, where you get nearer to the desired entry as far as you type letters in the search input window.

For example, if you wish to search for the entry aperitivo in the Devoto-Oli, you begin typing a, and the system displays the entry a,A, then you type p, and the system displays apache, which is the first entry beginning with ap, yhen you type e, and get ape, then r and get apericena, and finally type i and t and display the entry you were looking for.

This is a get-as-you-type mode that is not far from what you are used to when you look for a word in a paper dictionary, just parsing the alphabetical order of entries.

The left window displays the whole list of entries. When you see the desired entry, you can display its content just clicking on it.

In bilingual dictionaries you find two national flag buttons on the right of the search input field: with these buttons you can select one of the two sections of the dictionary, and decide whether to display or not the corresponding list of entries.

(4)

The Search mode

The second tab presents the Search mode where you can perform more complex queries. In all dictionaries you may search:

• among entry headwords • at full text

• among idiomatic expressions

• choosing among a set of labels whose content depends on the type of dictonary: grammar labels (article, adjective, adverb, noun, etc.), usage labels (archaic, popular, informal, obsolete, etc.), specialist categories (arts, astronomy, chemistry, physics, history, religion, etc.)

In monolingual dictionaries you may also search:

• among inflected forms (e.g. if you search for “vadano” you get the verb andare, as “vadano” is the third plural form of the present subjunctive)

And in bilingual dictionaries you may also search: • among translations

In particular dictionaries - i.e. the Italian Etymological or the Latino-Italian dictionary - you may find specific search fields.

In bilingual dictionaries you find two national flag buttons on the right of the search input field: with these buttons you can select one of the two sections of the dictionary, and decide whether to display or not the corresponding list of entries.

If you type something in more than one input field, you get as a result the list of entries complying to all the search parameters.

In the right window, words corresponding to the search parameters are highlighted with a yellow background.

(5)

Advanced search

In all input search fields you may use normal wildcards “?” and “*”: ? replaces one character

* raplaces any number (even none) of any character. For example, in the Headwords field of Devoto-Oli:

perni*

returns pernice, perniciosità, pernicioso, pernio, pernione, pernizioso m?lo

returns malo, melo, molo, mulo

You may use the logical operators AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR TO and quoted expressions: The examples below refer to a Full text search in the Devoto-Oli:

AND (you must type &&) to find all entries containing both words gatta && lardo

returns gatta e zampino

OR (you just type a blank) to find all entries containing one or both words coregone lavarello

returns coregono, lavarello, lavareto

AND NOT (you must type !) to find all entries containing the first word but not containing the second word

nottola !civetta returns nottolino e nottolone

NEAR TO (you must type #) to find all entries containing both words separated by not more than three other words

cellula # membrana returns citoplasma e nucleare

Double quotes (" ") are used to search expressions made of several words. "fare fronte"

(6)

Fields with predefined parameters

If you type the button with three small dots on the right of an input field, you open the window where you may choose one or more predefined parameters among a set of labels whose content depens on the type of dictionary: grammar labels (article, adjective, adverb, noun, etc.), usage labels (archaic, popular, informal, obsolete, etc.), specialist categories (arts, astronomy, chemistry, physics, history, religion, etc.).

Items presenting a triangle on their left side need to be "opened" (by clicking the triangle) to access a subchoise of predefined

parameters.

Once you have found the desired parameter, just click on it to insert it into the input field. If you wish to choose more that one

parameter, just repeat your selection: in this case you get as a result the list of entries complying to at least oneof the search parameters inserted in the labels field.

(7)

Quick search from an entry content

In the right window displaying the content of an entry, when you right-click a word with your mouse you get a small popup window presenting a quick search for the word under the cursor, among all fields of the Search mode.

Just click on the desired search field to get the result of the corresponding search.

After a few seconds the popup windows closes to avoid interfering with your reading of the text.

When you linger with the cursor over an abbreviated word (grammar labels, usage labels, categories) you get a balloon with its meaning instead:

(8)

Interaction among all data banks

If you have access to more than one dictionary, you can exploit the cross-search capabilities among all dictionaries in the eLexico.com online platform.

When you switch from one dictionary to another in Search mode, you carry along the search parameters of the first dictionary (for any search field shared by both dictionaries), and the second dictionary opens on the corresponding result. With such integration you may perform quick cross-searches among different dictionaries.

(9)

Menus

With the Products menu you can switch between dictionaries included in the package you have access to.

With the Language menu you may choose the language of the interface. Once the language has been set, all commands and messages are displayed in the choosen language.
