THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM
Bishop Lawson Bryan is proud to call Bainbridge First United Methodist Church his church home. He attended church here with his grandmother as a small child. BFUMC was one of the first places Bishop Bryan preached after being elected bishop and assigned to serve the South Georgia Annual
Conference. Bishop Bryan was set to retire in the summer of 2020. So, we invited him to preach here to bookend his years as bishop. Like everything else in 2020, this event was canceled. So, too, was Bishop Bryan’s retirement. He continued to serve our Annual Conference for another year. We rescheduled to have him come in October of 2020, but there was still great uncertainty, and large events were unwise. Bishop Bryan officially retired as bishop of South Georgia on August 31, 2021. We are celebrating that retirement and delighted to welcome Bishop Bryan to BFUMC on October 24. Bishop and Mrs. Bryan will be with us for morning worship. As a special treat and continuing to celebrate those who call BFUMC home, Rev. Hugh Davis will be with us to preach Sunday evening at 6:00 pm. Musical highlights of the day are our own Dr. Doug West on the organ in the morning, Viktor Billa providing an organ concert at 5:30 pm, and Maridel Rich Callan singing during the evening service. Invite a friend to this wonderful day of worship that we’ve been anticipating for so long.
Grace and peace, Melissa

Confirmation 2021
Our confirmation class and their parents went on retreat to Wesley Gardens in Savannah, GA last weekend. Youth and parents learned about the Wesleyan understanding of grace and the sacraments as well as how we can make faithful decisions and live as followers of Jesus. The group also toured many John Wesley historical sites in downtown
Savannah. On Sunday, the group worshipped with the wonderful congregation at Connexion United Methodist Church and enjoyed a visit with Rev. Michael Culbreth. Of course, good fun and antics were had by all.
Confirmation is a year long process where middle school students explore their own faith and learn about United Methodist doctrine and theology. This process prepares youth to take on for themselves the vows made on their behalf at their baptism or to choose to be baptized and follow Jesus for themselves. The youth are supported in this process by teachers, parents, and mentors. Confirmation Sunday will be November 21. Plan to be present for this special day for our Bainbridge FUMC Church family.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY
World Communion Sunday is one of the six churchwide Special Sundays of The United Methodist
Church. Our church is at its best when we reach out to sisters and brothers in need. World Communion Sunday calls the church to reach out to all people and model diversity among God’s children. United Methodists relate to World Communion Sunday by celebrating communion with other Christians around the world on this special Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to receive an offering to support scholarships for ethnic
undergraduate and graduate students. Our gifts often enable first-generation students to attend college. See the Special Sunday offering envelopes or the small information cards at the entrances for more information.
Our Book of Worships says, “All who intend to lead a Christian life, together with their children, are invited to receive the bread and cup.”
United Methodists believe in an open table, anyone may receive communion.
KEENAGERS
Keenagers is BACK,… AGAIN! We are jumping right back into action with our October Keenagers gathering on Wednesday, October 6 at 12:00 noon. CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP DINNERS
Christian Fellowship Dinners will be back to our usual procedures beginning Wednesday, October 6. Pick up will continue from 5:30-5:50 p.m. in the back drive way. In-person meals will be in the J. O. LEARNING TOGETHER ON WEDNESDAYS
Our Wednesday Night Dinner programs for the month of October feature opportunities for learning for the whole church family. If you do not regularly participate in dinner, you are encouraged to join us at 6:30 pm for these important programs:
Wednesday, October 6 – Our youth will share their experiences from the mission trip to Raleigh North Carolina this summer.
Wednesday, October 13 - Fall Break, no dinner or program
Wednesday, October 20 -- Mia Geiger, Director of Development for Wesley Glenn Ministries will share about this important United Methodist Agency. Wesley Glenn Ministries does an amazing job showing God’s love to adults with disabilities. Yet, many do not know of the great work they do. Come and be inspired.
Wednesday, October 27 – Upcoming Denominational Decisions and General Conference Update
For over forty years, the United Methodist Church has been in conflict on a national level about the church’s stance on homosexuality. A special General Conference was held in 2019 to discuss the issue. That conference retained the traditional United Methodist understanding, which is the current church law. In the years since, several new proposals have developed including a protocol to allow churches to separate from the
denomination while maintaining their property. This program will review the current realities and the questions facing the denomination and local churches. If you have specific questions, please email them to [email protected] so they can be included in the presentation.
KIDZQUEST

Music Notes
ALL MUSIC ACTIVITIES RESUME IN OCTOBER!
Here is our Fall schedule.
Starting Sunday, October 3 – we have rehearsal of Handbell Choir at 3:00 pm and Youth Choir at 4:30 pm.
Starting Wednesday, October 6 – Children’s Choir will rehearse at 6:30 pm and Chancel Choir at 7:30 pm.
We encourage everyone willing to sing in Choir or to play Bells to join now. WE REALLY WANT YOU!
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and to talk with Ms. Yuliia. She can help you understand how
rehearsals work and how you can join the group without any stress and enjoy rehearsals, and you don’t need to have any knowledge of music grammar. Now is very good time to join Chancel Choir as we restart our music program, and because our music anthems are not difficult.
CHRISTMAS MUSIC
Anyone who wants to sing only for the Christmas season’s special programs (Hanging of the Greens, Service of the Lessons and Carols, Christmas Eve) or Sunday morning Advent anthems can join us during rehearsals at 7:30 pm on Wednesdays. All the Christmas music will be practiced during the first 30 minutes of rehearsal.
Together, let’s all make this Christmas bright and happy.
YULIIA BILLA AND FSU
Some time ago in April, right as Covid quarantine became widespread, I received notice from FSU that I was accepted into the Master’s Degree program in Vocal Performance. I was going to let everyone know, but the announcement got sidetracked as Covid took over everyone’s attention. Even so, I did continue with by studies online and now I am starting the second year of my Master’s Degree. So finally, and with great pleasure, I am excited to share this news with my church family. While all my studies during this past year were only online, this year we are attending in person. We have air purifiers in each classroom, and have many interesting activities going on. I am doing a comique role in opera, learning baroque singing, hymnology, and deep studying of vocal and choral pedagogy. As such, I am looking forward to sharing the announcements of my future performances at FSU. I have also included performances of our other FSU choir members.
Music activities in Tallahassee
Florida State University is gradually reintroducing public concerts. In some of these will include our tenor/bass section leader Reece Windjack, and our Music Director Yuliia Billa.
October 9 at 7:30 pm, Ruby Diamond Concert Hall
University Symphony Orchestra and Combined Choirs Performance.
In the first presentation of this monumental work in over forty years, the University Symphony
Orchestra joins forces with the combined choruses of FSU to celebrate our return to live performances with Mahler’s "Resurrection Symphony". Arguably one of the most powerful works in all orchestral music, this orchestral/choral tour-de-force is a work that must be experienced live. The USO will be joined by soprano, Marcy Stonikas and, mezzo-soprano, Sahoko Timpone. Reece Windjack, our tenor/bass section leader, will sing in one of the combined choirs. Tickets are $10 Adult, $5 Child or Non-FSU Student.
October 28-31 at 7:30 pm, Ruby Diamond Concert Hall
Florida State University Opera Presents: W. A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)
The Magic Flute is one of Mozart’s most beloved and beautiful masterpieces and Florida State Opera brings a brand-new production to life in their return to fully staged live performance. This opera, which tells the story of a young, innocent couple’s struggle to confront adversity and find enlightenment and happiness after experiencing life’s trials and tribulations. In German, with English supertitles. Yuliia Billa, our Music Director, will be performing role of Papagena in two of the shows. More details will be available closer to the performance date. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for seniors and non-FSU students.
Before the show, you can visit the OPERA PRE-SHOW LECTURE about The Magic Flute given by the conductor. Admission is free.
Children’s Chat
I feel like we haven't seen each other in such a long time. Maybe that's because we haven't. I'm so looking forward to getting back together. Children's Fellowship is for children in first to fifth grade and meets on Sunday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We begin in the J. O. Smith building with Snack Supper, then move to the Children’s Fellowship room in the Sharp building.
Children's Worship Arts begins on Wednesday, October 6, right after Christian Fellowship Dinner at 6:25 pm.
