Welcome back to Term 2

The start of a term is always a special time at school when students, staff and parents/carers re-connect with each other. A special welcome to our new students and their families. I am sure you will enjoy the experience of being part of not only the Denmark Primary School community but the wider community as well. We currently have 462 students attending our school.

Today we held our Denmark Primary School “ANZAC Educational Assembly” in the Pam Wells Assembly Hall. Our Year 6 leaders did a terrific job of hosting this very important event. Thank you to Denmark RSL President Mr Horrie Wallis for his talk to our students and congratulations to our Choir for their moving performance under the direction of our music teacher Mrs Dani Woods.

Well done to Imogen Rowling for being awarded the “Year 6 Spirit of ANZAC Award” for the student in Year 6 who best displays the qualities of:

- Endurance - Courage - Ingenuity

- Good Humour and Mateship

These attributes align very closely with our four school wide expectations of being “safe and caring”, “respectful”, “resilient” and “be your best”.

We would also like to acknowledge Pablo Sleeman on being the Year 4 runner up champion boy at the Interschool Swimming Carnival held late last term, apologies to Pablo for leaving his name out of the last newsletter of term 1.

Staffing Changes

This term Wendy Pike will be our Student Services Deputy on Thursdays and Fridays. She will share this role with Peter Campbell (Monday to Wednesday) and we are pleased to have Mrs. Robyn McMeikan teach the Year 2s in Wendy Pike’s Room 15 on Thursdays and Fridays in her place. We are also pleased to have Mrs. Maya Boundy step into our Art teacher role this term.

Best wishes to Christine Robinson who has decided to retire after many years as one of our cleaners. Congratulations to Sandy Rupercht who is now our acting Cleaner in Charge (CIC) for the afternoon shift.

We also welcome aboard Michael Turner as our acting Gardener/Handy person after the retirement of Martin Anstiss. Dave O’Donnell remains in the role on Mondays and Michael will be here Monday to Thursday each week.

NAPLAN Testing - Year 3 and 5 students: 11 – 21 May

We would just like to remind everyone that our Year 3 and 5 students are expected to participate in the Australia-wide National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy NAPLAN between 11 and 21 May.

Students complete tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy online with the exception of the Year 3 Writing Test which remains a paper test. If you have any questions or you are concerned about your child’s participation in NAPLAN, please see their class teacher or Helen Spencer, NAPLAN Co-ordinator.

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health

In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families. Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
