Confirmation Preparation 2021 – 2022

Confirmation Preparation begins with the Confirmation Assessment Meeting. Jennifer Norton, the

Youth Ministry Coordinator will contact each family to set a time to meet one-on-one with the teenager. This discernment assessment meeting is by order of the Diocese of Fort Worth, which asks that each teenager that is of Confirmation age (15) be assessed for readiness prior to admittance into Confirmation classes. Through this assessment, the confirmation team is allowed to request that the

teen go through a year of Youth Ministry prior to admitting them into the Confirmation course in order to ensure the spiritual maturity of the teen.

Confirmation Preparation is a course designed for students in High School that are seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation. The preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation includes 8 evening sessions, an all-day retreat, and 4 meetings with the individual's selected sponsor. The evening sessions will be available in either the fall or the spring. This is intended to accommodate

extra-curricular activities that might otherwise interfere with evening sessions.

Confirmation Preparation Commitments

Once a student enters into Confirmation courses, they are committing to a time of deep spiritual preparation. A student that is admitted into Confirmation Preparation is committing to:

• Sunday Night ROCK (High School ministry)

• Confirmation Preparation classes which will be available either in the Fall or Spring semester to accommodate other extra-curricular activities.

• Mass on a regular basis

• If absent from a Confirmation preparation class, written assignment on missed topic. • Attending the Confirmation retreat on December 4th

• If necessary, more interviews on their spiritual growth.

If the student fails to adequately prepare for the Sacraments, Jennifer Norton, Coordinator of Youth Ministry, may request an additional year of preparation in order to allow for the fruits of the Sacrament to be acknowledged. If a student cannot meet one of these requirements, please meet with Jennifer Norton to discuss alternative options.

Confirmation Curriculum Fees

The fees for this course are not for the Sacrament, but for the materials needed for instruction and the confirmation retreat. The total fee is $40. Payment is due at the time of the parent meeting. Please

Necessary Documentation

Baptismal Certificate: Each candidate must turn in a copy of their Baptismal Certificate, as they must be baptized in the Catholic faith. We are required to send notification of the reception of the Sacraments to the Church of Baptism. If a candidate has a special circumstance (baptized in

another faith, another country, etc.), speak to Jennifer as soon as possible. If your child has been baptized at Holy Cross, you will not need to bring a baptismal certificate.

Confirmation Sponsor: Each candidate is expected to select a sponsor. It is recommended that the

sponsor be the Godparent from Baptism, thus strengthening the link between the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. However, it is not a requirement. The sponsor must: not be a parent,

be at least 16 years of age, have been confirmed; be a registered parishioner at a parish; and be in good standing with the Catholic Church. The sponsor should be an active Catholic with whom the candidate can speak openly about their faith journey. The candidate and their sponsor are expected to meet for several discussions throughout the preparation period.

Confirmation Sponsor Letter of Good Standing: Attached to this packet is a Letter of Good

Standing for the Confirmation Sponsor. The sponsor must have this form signed by his/her priest acknowledging that he or she is a practicing Catholic in good standing.

Confirmation Sponsor Meeting Assignments: Throughout formation, each candidate is expected to meet with their sponsor to discuss their journey towards the Sacrament of Confirmation. This can be done in person or virtually by phone or video calls.
