Prerequisites of Microsoft Office 2016 Installation
The MacBook must have a valid Mac OS. It is recommended to perform the free upgrade to the latest Mac OS. You may refer to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201475 to check if your MacBook meets the hardware specifications requirement for the free Mac OS upgrade.
The MacBook components must meet the following requirement as specified here https://products.office.com/en-us/office-system-requirements (Any lesser may impact performance and operability of the application):
o Computer and processor : A Mac computer with an Intel Processor o Memory : 4 GB of RAM
o Hard disk : 6 GB of free hard disk space
HFS+ hard disk format (also known as Mac OS Extended or HFS Plus)
o Display : 1280 x 800 or higher resolution monitor o Operating system : Mac OS X version 10.10

Logging in Office 365 for Online Download
1. Go to www.office365.com.
Note: The default browser on Mac OS is “Safari”; Blue Compass icon. You may
use other 3rd party browsers. Do take note that different browsers handle
download differently. The instructions and the screenshots in the guide are based on Mac OS X 10.11 with Safari 9.0.3.

2. On the top right corner of the page, Click “Sign in”, and select “Work, school or university” from the drop list.
Note: Due to the constant website layout update from Microsoft, the position

3. Login with your iChat credentials. Provide your iChat email address and password. Click “Sign in” to authenticate.

Note: If this is your first time logging in to Office 365, you may be prompted
by the browser to save your login credentials. Choose your preference. You may decide this later by clicking “Not Now”.

5. On the list of “Settings”, scroll down to “My app settings” and click “Office 365”. Dashboard will load Office 365 Settings page.
6. On left panel of the Office 365 Settings page, click “Install status”. 7. This page allows you to manage all Office installations. Click “Install

8. Ensure the current section is “Install Office 2016 for Mac” and click
“Install”. Do not expand other sections and install older versions.
9. The downloading of the installation package will commence.
Note: The following screenshots are taken from “Safari” browser. The
download status can be monitored on the top right corner of the browser.
10. Double click the installer package to launch the installation.
Note: If you encounter error launching directly from the browser, click the

Guided Installation Steps
1. Click “Continue” (continued from Chapter 2, step 10).
Note: The installer should launch and display the welcome screen. If you’re
facing difficulties despite retrying download and launching the downloaded package from “Finder”, kindly seek assistance from SPICE Service Desk.

3. Click “Agree” to proceed.
4. Do not “Change Install Location” unless instructed to. Click “Install”.
If the MacBook has more than one disk volume, you may be prompted to select the disk (Under “Destination Select”) to install Microsoft Office 2016. It is recommended to select the same volume your Mac OS X is on.

Installation will take some time depending on your hardware specifications. A simulated installation (From the left screenshot to the right) on MacBook Pro (13”, Mid 2012) took 10mins.
6. Click “Close” to end the installation.
Note: If you encounter a different message other than “The installation was

Check and Launch Office 2016 Components
1. Using “Finder”, click “Go” and “Applications”. You may also use the shortcut combination to quick launch it; [Shift] + [Command] + [A].

3. Double click “Microsoft Words” to launch it. A similar icon will bounce about at the bottom to indicate loading in progress.
4. On default application launch settings (Including first launch), you will
be prompted with “Word Document Gallery”. Layout may vary across different periodic updates and versions. If the first icon on
the left panel reads “Sign in”, refer to chapter 5, “Signing In Office
365 Services with iChat Account”.

Signing in Office 365 Services with iChat Account
1. Click on the first icon on the left panel to sign in. Enter your iChat Email and click “Next”.
2. Provide your iChat Account password and click “Sign in”.

3. When the sign in is successful, you will see your profile avatar on the left panel. Click “Blank Document”.
4. If your Words Application only allows you “View Only”, you will need to activate Microsoft Office 2016. Otherwise, your installed Microsoft Office 2016 is ready.

5. On the top menu, click “Word”, and click “Activate Office”. You may be prompted for Microsoft Office 365 login. Provide your iChat Account credentials.
