Tonight's Game

The Capitals face the New York Rangers on Wednesday in Washington's season opener, marking the fifth time in franchise history the Capitals have opened their season against the Rangers and the first time at home in franchise history. The Capitals have a 23-21-1-1 record all-time in season openers and are 5-0-2 over the last seven seasons. Washington holds a record of 16-1-2 in their last 19 home openers. Alex Ovechkin has recorded 20 points (11g, 9a) in 16 season-opening games, and his 11 goals in season openers are the most among active players. Only 12 players in NHL history have scored at least 12 career goals in their team’s season-opening games – with Ovechkin only a hat trick away from a share of the all-time lead.

Note of the Night

- With 730 career goals, Alex Ovechkin is two goals shy of passing Marcel Dionne (731g) for fifth on the NHL's all-time goals list

- A 37-goal season would propel Ovechkin to 767 goals, which would pass Dionne, Brett Hull (741) and Jaromir Jagr (766) for third on the NHL’s all-time goals list.

- Ovechkin (269 PPG, 2nd; 116 GWG, 4th) also can move up NHL lists for career power-play goals (Dave Andreychuk: 274 PPG, 1st) and game- winning goals (Phil Esposito: 118 GWG, 3rd).

- Ovechkin needs 165 goals to pass Wayne Gretzky (894g) as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. With Ovechkin signed with the Capitals for the next five seasons, he would need to average 33 goals per season during that span to pass Gretzky as the NHL's all-time goal-scoring leader.

- Ovechkin signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract on July 27. The deal will carry Ovechkin through 21 seasons with the Capitals. In Washington, D.C., sports history, only Washington Senators pitcher Walter Johnson and Washington Football Team cornerback Darrell Green have played at least 20

Top Caps Facts New Wave

- The Capitals 2021-22 season-opening roster includes seven players aged 25 or younger, six of them who were drafted, including four rookies Hendrix Lapierre (19), Connor McMichael (20), Martin Fehervary (22) and Beck Malenstyn (23) (additionally 25 or younger: Daniel Sprong, Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek).

- That marks the first time since 2015-16 that the Capitals have had at least seven players on the opening roster at the age of 25 or younger (2015-16:

John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Tom Wilson, Andre Burakovsky, Michael Latta, Nate Schmidt and Marcus Johansson).

- If Lapierre and McMichael both play, tonight could mark the first time since 2014-15 that multiple rookies play in a Capitals' season opener (2014-15:

Wilson, Latta and Connor Carrick).

- Should Lapierre make his NHL debut tonight, it will mark the fourth time in franchise history a Capitals draft pick made his NHL debut in either the ensuing or following year of his draft in three straight seasons (Fehervary, 2018-19; McMichael: 2019-20) and the first time since 2007-08 to 2010-11 (Nicklas Backstrom, Karl Alzner, John Carlson and Marcus Johansson).

- Lapierre could become the first forward to make his NHL debut for the Capitals at the age of 19 since Burakovsky in the 2014-15 season.

- Lapierre led Washington with five assists and tied with Evgeny Kuznetsov for the team lead in points (5) during the preseason.

- In addition, Caps goaltenders Ilya Samsonov (24) and Vitek Vanecek (25) will begin the season as the youngest goaltending duo in the NHL.

Strong Core

- The Capitals’ core of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, T.J. Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov and Tom Wilson will enter their seventh season together. Only the Anaheim Ducks, New York Islanders and Winnipeg Jets have at least seven players play together for the last six seasons on their active roster.

- The septet of players have combined for 826 of the Capitals’ 1,463 goals since 2015-16 (56.5%), 1,377 of the 2,487 assists (55.4%) and 2,203 of the 3,950 points (55.8%).

American Leader

- Should the Capitals win tonight against the New York Rangers, head coach Peter Laviolette will record his 674th career win, which would pass John Tortorella (673) for the most wins by an American-born coach in NHL history.

- Last season, Laviolette set a franchise record with a .688 points percentage (36-15-5), the highest points percentage by a first-year head coach in franchise history.

- Laviolette has improved his respective team’s point percentage from the season prior to his arrival at all five franchise’s he’s coached in his career.

- Last season, the Capitals ranked third in the NHL in goals (188) and their 3.36 goals per game average marked the second-highest average by the Capitals in the last 10 seasons.

- Laviolette is 27 wins shy of becoming the 10th coach in NHL history to reach 700 career wins.

Super Carly

- John Carlson has finished in the top-five in points among defensemen in each of the last four seasons, recording 44 points (10g, 34a) in 52 games last season.

- Should Carlson finish in the top-5 this season, he will be the 23rd defenseman in NHL history to finish in the top-five in points in five straight seasons and the first since Brent Burns from 2014-15 to 2018-19.

- Only Burns, Nicklas Lidstrom, Al MacInnis, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin and Bobby Orr have accomplished this feat since 1970, and 18 of 21 defensemen to accomplish this feat and are eligible are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

- Since 2017-18, Carlson ranks first in the NHL in points among defensemen (53g, 204a, 257p), holding a 33-point lead over the next closest defenseman (Brent Burns: 224 points).

- Carlson is 12 assists shy of passing Michal Pivonka (418a) for the third-most assists in franchise history. Should Carlson pass Pivonka, the Capitals will be one of three teams with their top-three franchise assist leaders on their active roster, joining the Vegas Golden Knights (founded in 2017-18) and the Winnipeg Jets (founded in 1999-00).

Mo Time

- Anthony Mantha, who enters the regular season one goal shy of his 100th career goal, has scored at a pace of at least 20 goals in each of his last five seasons.

- Mantha set a career-high mark of 25 goals in 2018-19 in just 67 games, a 30-goal pace. Mantha followed that season with 16 goals in 43 games in the shortened 2019-20 season, again scoring at a 30-goal pace.

- Since his first full season in the NHL in 2016-17, Mantha’s 6.5 relative shot attempt percentage at five-on-five is the second-highest percentage in the NHL among players with at least 200 games played, trailing only Boston’s Patrice Bergeron (7.2 percent).

(9)

Marty Party

- Martin Fehervary, who recorded 14 points (4g, 10a) in 56 games with the Hershey Bears of the AHL in 2019-20, surpassed his rookie point total in Hershey in 32 fewer games in 2020-21.

- He finished the season with 17 points (3g, 14a) in 24 games, which ranked second among Hershey defensemen.

- Fehervary also ranked third on the team in assists, tied for sixth in points and fifth in plus/minus (10).

- Additionally, Fehervary led AHL defensemen with three shorthanded points (1g, 2a) and his 0.71 points per game was tied for the seventh-highest rate among defensemen with at least 20 games played.

Quick Hits

- With a 57-point season, Evgeny Kuznetsov can pass Kevin Hatcher (426 points), Scott Stevens (429 points), Dennis Maruk (431 points) and Calle Johansson (474 points) to crack the top-10 on the franchise points list.

- Tom Wilson has increased his points per game rate in each of the last four seasons, averaging a career high of 0.70 points last season (33 points in 47 games).

- With 43 points (22g, 21a) in 53 games, T.J. Oshie’s 0.81 points per game average last season was the second-highest average in a season in his career (highest: 0.82 in 2016-17). He was on pace to score 34 goals over an 82-game season, which would have been a career high.

- The Capitals 23-man roster includes 11 players the Capitals selected in the NHL Draft, six players acquired via trade and six players signed as free agents.
