CREDENTIALS:
The 2007-08 regular season credentials will not be valid for the 2008 playoffs. Credential requests for all rounds prior to the Stanley Cup Finals, must be submitted to the Penguins Media Relations Department and will be distributed before the first home game of the first round.
Game-by-game credentials will be issued and should be reserved as early as possible. Major daily newspapers, radio and television will receive priority in handling game-by-game requests. These requests must be submitted to Jennifer Bullano or Brian Werger no later than 24 hours prior to the game. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. Game-by-game credentials can be picked up at Gate 3 at Mellon Arena two hours prior to game time.
The NHL handles all credentials for the Stanley Cup Finals. All members of the media must apply to the NHL for Stanley Cup Finals credentials. Applications are available in the media relations office and must be received by the date determined by the league.
Only working members of the media will be admitted to the locker rooms. The Penguins require all members of the media to display credentials at all times at practice sessions and games.
PRESS BOX:
The press box is located on the west side of the building above section D-24. Elevators to the press box are located inside Gate 3 near the press lounge. Please note that ALL seats in the press box are assigned and media must sit in the seat assigned. Due to limited seating, overflow media will be assigned seats in the auxiliary seating areas in the north end and east side of the building when necessary.
PHOTOGRAPHERS:
Only outlets that have covered the team on a regular basis throughout the regular season and have applied for playoff credentials will be assigned shooting locations in the runways and Igloo seating.
Ice-level positions will be available on a game-by-game basis for each period. Photographers at ice- level will be shooting through the glass. Photo assignments will be posted in the press lounge and the media workroom prior to each game.
TELEVISION CREWS:
Due to seating limitations, television crews will not be assigned press box seating. On-air talent will be assigned one seat per station in either the auxiliary press section or, space permitting, in the press box. Television crews are asked to view the game in the press lounge or media workroom. TV crews are not permitted to shoot highlight footage of game action.
PRESS LOUNGE:
The press lounge is located on the lower level near Gate 3. Members of the media and game night staff must show passes or credentials at the door for admittance. The press lounge will be open two hours prior to game time with dinner and beverages available for purchase. 2008 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS FORMAT
The National Hockey League’s 30 clubs are aligned into two conferences each consisting of three divisions (Eastern Conference: Atlantic, Northeast, Southeast; Western Conference: Central, Northwest, Pacific). The number of teams qualifying for the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs is 16.
First-round playoff berths will be awarded to the first-place team in each division, as well as to the next five- best teams (based on regular-season point totals in each conference). The three division winners in each con- ference will be seeded first through third for the playoffs and the next five-best teams (in order of points) will be seeded fourth through eighth. In each conference, the team seeded No. 1 will play the team seeded No. 8;
No. 2 vs. No. 7; No. 3 vs. No. 6; No. 4 vs. No. 5 in the quarterfinal round. Home-ice in the quarterfinals is granted to those teams seeded first through fourth in each conference.
Teams will be re-seeded based on regular-season points at the start of the Conference Semifinals and Conference Finals. Home-ice advantage for the Stanley Cup championship series will be determined by points.
All series remain best-of-seven competitions.
Conference Quarterfinals (Series A-H)
The six regular season division champions are ranked in the first three positions in their respective confer- ence, the club with the greater number of points being ranked first. The remaining five playoff clubs in each conference will be ranked based on regular-season points.
EASTERN CONFERENCE WESTERN CONFERENCE
Series A: No. 1 Montreal vs. No. 8 Boston Series E: No. 1 Detroit vs. No. 8 Nashville Series B: No. 2 Pittsburgh vs. No. 7 Ottawa Series F: No. 2 San Jose vs. No. 7 Calgary Series C: No. 3 Washington vs. No. 6 Philadelphia Series G: No. 3 Minnesota vs. No. 6 Colorado Series D: No. 4 New Jersey vs. No. 5 New York Rangers Series H: No. 4 Anaheim vs. No. 5 Dallas Conference Semifinals (Series I-L)
For the Conference Semifinals, the teams will be re-seeded based on the same criteria used in the
Conference Quarterfinals (Division winners, followed by remaining clubs based on regular-season points). The following are possible scenarios:
If one or two division winners are eliminated in the Conference Quarterfinals:
The remaining division winner(s) would be seeded first (and second if two division winners
remain), followed by the remaining teams in order of regular-season points. The No. 1 seed would face the team with the fewest regular-season points, while the second and third teams would meet.
If all three division winners are eliminated in the Conference Quarterfinals:
The remaining four teams would be ranked based on regular-season points. The No. 1 seed would face the No. 4 seed, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams would meet.
If Conference Quarterfinals end early:
The start dates for the Conference Semifinals may be moved up depending on a number of fac- tors, including building availability and travel schedules.
Conference Finals (Series M and N)
The same criteria used in selection of order for the Conference Quarterfinals (Division winners, followed by remaining clubs based on regular-season points) will again be in effect. The following are possible scenarios:
If a division winner meets a non-division winner with more regular-season points:
The division winner would have home ice advantage.
If the Conference Semifinal series end early:
The start dates for the Conference Finals may be moved up depending on a number of factors, including building availability and travel schedules.
Stanley Cup (Series O)
The Eastern Conference champion and the Western Conference champion will meet in the Stanley Cup Finals series. Home ice will be determined by the higher number of regular season points, subject to the tie- breaking procedures outlined below. Games will be played on a 2-2-1-1-1 basis.
Tie-Breaking Procedure
In the event that two or more teams are tied in points at the conclusion of the regular season, the standing of the teams in each conference will be determined in the following order:
The greater number of games won by the club.
The higher number of points earned in games against each other. If two teams are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two teams are tied, the higher winning percentage of available points earned in games among those teams shall be used to determine the standing.
The greater differential between goals scored for and against for the entire regular season.

michel therrien - head coach
andre savard - assistant coach
In his second full season behind the Penguins’ bench, Michel Therrien guided the team to its first division title in 10 years.
Following last season’s 105-point fin- ish and playoff berth, Therrien wanted the Penguins to earn another spot in the postseason this year. They achieved that goal, but soared to the Atlantic Division title with 102 points despite spending most of the season without some of their top players. Captain Sidney Crosby and goaltender Marc-Andre both missed 28 games with high ankle sprains, while Gary Roberts missed nearly four months with a broken leg and high ankle sprain.
In addition, defenseman Mark Eaton suf- fered a season-ending injury after
appearing in only 36 games.
Nevertheless, the Penguins won the franchise’s sixth division title and first- ever in the Atlantic Division. The last divi- sion crown came in the Northeast
Division in 1997-98.
A finalist for the 2007 Jack Adams Trophy as NHL Coach of the Year, Therrien guided the Penguins to a 45- point improvement last season as the Penguins fell just short in the Atlantic Division race.
Therrien was named head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 15, 2005, following a strong two-and-half year stint as head coach of the club’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
He led the Baby Penguins to the AHL finals in 2003-04, and his 2005-06 team was off to a remarkable 21-1-2-1 start, including a league-record 15 straight wins, when he was summoned to
Pittsburgh as a mid-season replacement for coach Eddie Olczyk.
Andre Savard helped the Penguins capture their first Atlantic Division cham- pionship in his second season on Michel Therrien’s staff as an assistant coach.
His primary responsibilities include working with the Penguins’ defensemen.
In 2007-08, the Penguins’ defensive unit continued its improvement from the pre- vious season as the Penguins allowed fewer goals than in 2006-07. It marks the second-straight season the team has allowed fewer goals against than in the previous campaign. Savard also helped in the development of young Penguins defensemen such as Ryan Whitney, Rob Scuderi, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang.
Prior to joining coach Therrien’s staff
as an assistant on July 3, 2006, Savard spent the previous three seasons as the assistant general manager of the
Montreal Canadiens.
He also served as the general man- ager of the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Canadiens’ affiliate team in the
American Hockey League. Savard was the Montreal general manager from Nov.
20, 2000, to the end of the 2002-2003 season. In his first complete season as general manager in 2001-2002, the team reached the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1997- 1998. Savard originally joined the
Canadiens as director of hockey person-
nel on July 14, 2000.
mike yeo - assistant coach
gilles meloche - goaltending coach
Mike Yeo helped guide the Penguins to the Atlantic Division title in 2008.
He joined head coach Michel
Therrien in Pittsburgh on Dec. 15, 2005.
Together, the two helped lay the ground- work for this season’s success, in which the Penguins produced their second- straight season with 100 or more points.
Yeo’s primary responsibilities include working with the Penguins’ special teams. The Penguins’ power play
remained one of the NHL’s best in 2007- 08. Meanwhile, the penalty-kill unit improved substantially throughout the season, especially in the second half of the year.
Yeo served as an assistant coach
with the Penguins’ top minor-league affili- ate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for nearly six years. He was named the first assis- tant coach in team history on Jan. 24, 2000, after announcing his retirement as a player.
In 2005-06, Yeo helped guide the Baby Penguins to their most-successful start. The Baby Penguins opened with a 21-1-2-1 record and 45 points in their first 25 American Hockey league games.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won its first nine games of the season and did not lose a game in regulation until its 24th game.
The Baby Penguins also established an AHL road winning streak of 15 games, dating back to April 10 of 2004-05
In his second season as the Penguins’ goaltending coach, Gilles Meloche has helped in the development of Marc-Andre Fleury, while Ty Conklin and Dany Sabourin both enjoyed success between the pipes in Pittsburgh.
He re-joined the coaching staff in 2006-07 mentoring the goaltenders and his impact was huge.
Under Meloche’s tutelage, Fleury built off a 40-win season in 2006-07 with another strong campaign. Despite miss- ing 28 games with a high ankle injury, Fleury returned to the lineup and was solid in the final stretch of the season as the Penguins stormed to the Atlantic Division title.
Likewise, Conklin thrived once he was called up to Pittsburgh and his steady goaltending kept the Penguins atop the Atlantic Division standings despite a rash of injuries to key personnel.
Sabourin also found success in Pittsburgh as he posted 10 wins while serving in a backup role for the Penguins.
Meloche served as the Penguins’
goaltending coach from 1989-2004 and has served as an amateur scout for the Penguins for 17 years after joining the Penguins’ management team in Dec.
1989. Meloche served in the dual role on both Penguins’ Stanley Cup champion teams in 1991 and 1992.
Meloche coaches and evaluates the goaltenders both in Pittsburgh and with the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with the Chicago Blackhawks, California Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons and Minnesota North Stars before playing his final three seasons with the Penguins after the team acquired Meloche in a 1985 trade.
He appeared in 788 NHL games dur-
ing his career, posting a record of 270-
351-131, with a 3.64 goals-against aver-
age. In 45 career playoff games, he post-
ed a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-
against average.
