V6 COURSE GUIDE

(2)

WELCOME

Welcome to Walsall College - one of the most successful colleges in the country, a place where you can begin your journey towards a bright future.

By joining us you will belong to the only college in the Black Country to be rated outstanding by Ofsted:

outstanding for teaching and learning; outstanding for state-of-the-art facilities; and outstanding in our success rates, which put us in the top 10% in the country.

V6, our sixth form with a difference, will provide you with every opportunity you need to play your own part in that success story.

As well as benefiting from outstanding academic opportunities, you can take part in extra-curricular activities - national competitions, volunteering at events or working on live industry briefs that will put you one step ahead of the competition when you apply for a job or university place. Walsall College is also a place to make friends and our lively Students’ Union will help you settle in to life here.

We are not just outstanding; we are an exciting and safe place to study, a place where everyone is welcomed and supported in reaching their full potential.

Just take a look at some of our former students who have gone on to achieve outstanding success after completing one of our vocational courses, including business student Joshua Dowen (page 10), who has gone on to secure an Apprenticeship with KPMG, and Craig Morris, who achieved his goal of becoming an air steward (page 85).

Because we’re always finding ways to improve your learning experience and career prospects here. In 2015, we open a stunning new £11m Business and Sports Hub. We’ve invested £300,000 in an impressive Engineering and Manufacturing Workshop. And we’re extremely proud to now offer a full BA (Hons) degree at a fraction of the cost of going to university.

We hope you find the course you are looking for. You have a lot of work ahead but we will support you every step of the way. It’s why we are looking forward to welcoming you - we can’t wait to help you make it happen at Walsall College.

The support and encouragement you give your child at home can make a big difference to their success at College. We have a good relationship with our students’ parents and their involvement.

V6 Introductory Parents’ Evening

WORKING WITH PARENTS

Parents’ role

Encourage your child to complete homework on time. It’s set regularly and is essential to their independent learning.

Make sure they attend regularly. Missing essential coursework or exams can really affect your child’s chances of success. If they are ill, please call or email their personal tutor.

Remind them to look after their belongings and leave expensive equipment at home. It may cost you a lot of money to replace items.

Talk to us. Come along to our termly parents’ evening so that we can chat about your child’s progress.

Have your say. Share your opinions, ask questions and make suggestions on our online parents’ forum - and help us shape our students’ future.

Online parents’ forum

What do you think? What do you like about the College?

How could we improve? Tell us at [email protected]

Our role

Expect regular updates. We’ll keep you informed about your child’s behaviour, homework, exams, assessments, successes and areas for improvement. You’ll get a report card termly, as well as four parents’ evenings a year.

Benefit from personal guidance and support for your child. Each child has a personal tutor who is responsible for their care, progress and achievement. They’re always on hand to help them reach their full potential - and help with any difficulties.

“The College helped my daughter realise her dream. The teachers

filled her with confidence and belief that anything is possible.”

It’s a new programme for 16-24 year olds and a great way to take the first step on the career ladder.

APPRENTICESHIPS

An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career path in many businesses. They’re an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage, and combine practical ‘hands on’ work experience with academic knowledge. TRAINEESHIPS

Do you want to gain the skills needed to progress on to an Apprenticeship? Traineeships are a new programme for young people aged 16 to 24 to help them take the first step on the career ladder. By completing a traineeship, candidates will develop the skills and workplace experience required by employers when hiring

apprentices. Students will also have a lot more confidence in their own abilities and be job-ready.

Traineeships are intended for young people who:

• are not currently in a job and have little work experience, but who are focused on work or the prospect of it

• are 16-19 and are qualified below Level 3 or 19-24 and have not yet achieved a full level 2 qualification Areas covered in the programme include:

• focused work preparation training - eg CV writing, interview preparation, job searching, inter-personal skills

• high-quality work experience - giving young people real-life work placement to enhance their skills and confidence

• English and maths - for young people who have not achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better The initiative is part of the government’s wider aim to ensure the future workforce possesses the skills that employers want in their apprentices and employees.

To find out more, please contact our Apprenticeships Team on 01922 651129.

APPRENTICESHIPS

An Apprenticeship is a brilliant first step on the career path in many businesses. They are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage, and combine practical ‘hands-on’ experience with academic knowledge.

There are three levels of Apprenticeships available:

• Intermediate Level Apprenticeship - Level 2

• Advanced Level Apprenticeship - Level 3

• Higher Level Apprenticeship - Level 4 How do you become an apprentice?

You might already be employed but if not, to find vacancies go to:

• or come into The Job Shop and complete an application

If you are already employed...

If you want to further your qualifications in the job you are currently in, you could ask your employer if this is possible. Apprenticeship training won’t cost your

employer anything if you are between the ages of 16-18.

How much can you earn?

The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £2.73 per hour (as of 1/10/14). But many employers pay more - the average salary is approximately £170 per week.

What are the entry requirements?

Typically 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths and English, or a NVQ in a related subject, but each framework has different entry requirements so check our course sheets.

What if you don’t meet the entry criteria?

Don’t worry, there are a number of routes you can follow to help you get the required skills to do an

Apprenticeship. Please come in to the college or call 01922 651129 and we can discuss your options.

Did you know? After finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer.

Advanced Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Level 3)

My initial ambitions were to become a race engineer but following poor results at A Level I decided to look for an Apprenticeship. After researching them, I came to the conclusion that an Apprenticeship was probably the best way for me to learn and would also still give me the opportunity to work on vehicles.

Throughout the course there was a good balance of practical and theoretical learning which really helped my understanding. Since leaving the College I’ve now gained a full-time job as a mechanic at West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) where I completed my Apprenticeship. My day-to-day duties include the service and maintenance of the entire ambulance fleet as well as running repairs during the day if needed. I absolutely love working on the vehicles, problem solving and the variety of work on a day-to-day basis!

I now aim to increase my knowledge in the motor trade before hopefully working my way up into

management roles. On the job experience is what a lot of employers look for nowadays so I’d definitely encourage others to go down this route as an Apprenticeship gives you that as well as recognised

qualifications! Walsall College was an enjoyable place to learn with a relaxed atmosphere and tutors who were always willing to help when you needed support.
