Temperature 28 °C 33 °C 29 °C 30 °C 22 °C 1. What is the temperature on Feb. 6?

2. How many days during the week are sunny? 3. What was the hottest day of the week? 4. What day was the temperature lowest? 5. What day was the sky overcast?

Have you tried to fly a kite? What kind of weather was it?

Would it help if the wind is stronger? Does wind speed change?

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

Record observations of the basic weather elements for a week wind speed and direction

A. Do the following activities:

ACTIVITY 1

Go out.

Look for a tree to be observed. Observe it every 10 minutes. Answer the following questions: A. Are the leaves moving?

B. Do they move slowly or fast?

C. From what direction is the wind coming from?

Record your observations in your notebook using the table below.

Question A Question B Question C Next 10 Minutes

Question A Question B Question C

After analyzing your observations, what can you say about the speed of the wind and its direction?

ACTIVITY 2

Study the model of an improved anemometer. Prepare the following materials:

4 plastic cups, 2 pieces of wood of equal size, nails, knife, scissor 1. Bore hole on the cups enough to fit the wood on it with a knife or

scissor.

2. Attach the cups to each piece of wood. Make sure the paper cup points to one direction.

(5)

3

3. Nail the two pieces of wood together in the middle into a bigger wood or pole. Bore hole bigger than the nail hole so that the wood can turn easily.

4. Implant the wood or pole on the ground.

5. Color one cup so that you can count the number of turns your cups will make in a minute.

6. Place your improvised anemometer in an open space. 7. Observe how it works.

8. Record your data in your notebook similar to the table below.

Time Wind Speed (No. of turns/minute)

How does your improvised anemometer work?

How does it show wind speed (slow, moderate, strong)?

ACTIVITY 3

Prepare the following materials: thick carboard, plastic straw, nail 1. Get a thick carboard.

2. Cut two arrows of the same size. Be sure to make the tails bigger than the arrow heads.

3. Put a plastic straw between the two arrows.

(6)

4

5. Staple them together. 6. Insert a long and thin nail

through the straw.

7. Nail it to a pole in the yard. 8. Observe how it works.

How does your improvised wind vane work? How does it tell the direction of the wind?

ACTIVITY 4

Place the 2 instrument outside in an open area. Observe how the 2 improvised instruments work. Record your observations in your notebook.

ACTIVITY 5

Using your improvised anemometer and wind vane observe the speed and direction of the wind for 5 days.

Observe also the general weather condition for that day. Record your observation on the chart in your notebook. Use the symbols.

Measuring and Recording Speed and Direction of the Wind

Weathermen gather information about the speed and direction of the wind. They do this to perfect weather. They use instruments to measure wind speed and

directions.

Wind speed is measured by an anemometer. The wind speed is shown by the number of circles or revolutions the anemometer makes in one minute.

At times the anemometer almost does not move. We say that the wind is calm. A slow wind will move the anemometer a little. A moderate wind can turn the cups of the anemometer can make several circles or revolutions. We say that the air is strong or fast.

A wind vane tells the direction from where the wind is blowing. It is an instrument with an arrowhead and a tail. The wind pushes the tail of the wind vane away. The arrowhead points toward the direction of the wind.

A. Study the illustrations.

Read the directions and draw on your notebook.

1. Look at the smoke coming out from the lighted lamp. Draw the

direction from where the wind is blowing.

2. Look at the tree. Describe the speed of the wind. Is it slow? Moderate? Strong? Draw the direction of the wind.

Apply It

I learned that:

the speed and direction of the wind changes during the day an anemometer is used to determine the speed of the wind wind may be calm, slow, moderate or fast

wind may also be named after its corresponding speed a wind vane is used to determine the direction of the wind

(12)

10

3. Here is a picture of a wind vane. Draw the direction from where the wind is blowing.

4. Look at the flag. Is it moving slow or fast?

5. The weather report below shows the weather condition for the day.

Read it carefully and fill in the blanks that follow.

WEATHER REPORT

1. The weather condition in Metro Manila is . 2. The wind is blowing from the direction. 3. The speed of the wind is .

4. The general weather condition for the days is . 5. The highest temperature reading is .

B. Complete these statement in your notebook.

1.

2. You were about to go and you observed that the sky was so dark and it was drizzling.

C. Do this at home:

Observe the weather for two days.

Draw the clothes you should wear to prepare for it. Write the possible activities you could do for the day. Do it in your notebook.

The weather today is I can do the following: I can wear the following:

13

Answer the questions on your notebook.

1. Is there a change in the wind speed from day to day ? 2. What are these changes in wind speed?

3. What is the weather condition on Day 1? Day 3?

4. From what direction is the wind blowing on Day 1? Day 2? Day 3? 5. Is there a change in the wind direction in three days?

6. What are these changes in wind direction? How do they affect the weather conditions?

B.

1. What is the use of a wind vane? 2. What is the use of an anemometer?

3. How would a wind vane and an anemometer help us?

Congratulations for trying your best in

accomplishing this module, try to share the things
