What are Study Skills?

Study skills = learning skills They're life skills, career skills

-needed beyond school.

Often not taught them. We've

learned them by necessity over the years. Sink or Swim.

Some of us develop these easier than

others. Ex: organization

What specific topics do you think are included? What do you think it takes to be successful in school and

learning?

What are some things this picture implies about

What is the goal of school?

It’s really about developing

skills and preparing for next

steps in life

It’s not really about getting

good grades, memorizing

facts or test taking

Ask yourself: How will

(10)

Why are students successful in

school? These students:

Finish homework

Are organized

Have discipline to work at home,

prepare

Manage time well/limit distractions

Attend

Prepare and study for tests

Choose to listen when they don't feel

like it

View note taking as a tool

Have a positive attitude about class,

reserve judgment.

Recognize hard work now will pay off

later.

Recognize that school helps develop

skills that will lead to long term success.

(11)
(12)
(13)

Why is success in school important?

Work Now

Payoff Later

School opens doors. Why limit yourself?

You need skills! High school only gets you

(14)

Education does good things

More career choice.

Leads to higher pay, good benefits (health, vacation, retirement,

perks).

Develops work ethic, follow through, teamwork, problem solving,

other important skills. It’s all about skills/expertise.

Allows us to explore our interests.

Expands our understanding of the world. Develops pride in achievement, confidence.

Provides opportunity (travel, challenges, new ideas, exposure to the

world).

(15)

Question:

What does $12/hr. look like?

School/Education is your path to independence. Will you develop the skills necessary to support yourself adequately?

$1920 ($12/hr x 40 hours x 4 weeks) -384 (taxes @ 20%)

-500 (rent)

-150 (utilities - electric, phone, water, gas, cable, internet, garbage) -150 (car payment?)

-150 (gas)

-250 (food)= $8.33/day -150 (car insurance)

-100 (medical/home supplies/gifts) - 50 (saving) = 3% savings rate

(16)

Education

Pays!

16 Monthly earnings with:

bachelor’s degree = $4404 high school diploma = $2672

That’s a difference of $1732 a month.

(17)
(18)

Are you in control?

(21)

Your Perspective and Attitude

Matter

How you view school, your abilities,

learning, is critical.

People view their situations, lives

differently and this affects how they respond to where they’re at.

If you see school as an opportunity,

you’re going to get more out of it than someone who views it as boring.

Someone who views themselves as

limited, will not challenge themselves or accomplish as much.
