Family Support Services

The Family Support Services can

be found on the ground floor

(opposite children’s x-ray) within

the family support centre.

Our opening hours are:

9.00am to 4.00pm

Monday to Friday

You can call in and see us or you

can contact us on ext. 18700

Family Support Services

Family Accommodation Support Team

The Family Accommodation Support Team is

here to arrange your accommodation and to

support you in any way possible during your

child’s stay in the hospital. They will visit

the wards several times each day and if you

are at your child’s bedside they will come

and say “hello”.

Family Support Service

The Family Support Service ensures that all

families in crisis are able to access a

service which is confidential, non

judgemental and responsive to their needs,

offering an exceptionally high standard of

emotional and practical support.

Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)

The PALS service aims to respond to issues

and concerns raised by children, families

and friends and will work collaboratively

with teams to resolve them.

If you are currently staying in our

PICU/HDU emergency accommodation:

There are three shower rooms including a toilet

on the unit, and an additional toilet all located on

the corridor of the accommodation.

The unit also has a Day room where you can eat

and prepare food. There is a microwave and hot

water geezer and also two fridges to store food.

We ask for any food placed in the fridge to be

labelled with a name and date (labels provided in

the blue file on top of fridge).

Fresh linen is available to you, help yourself from

the cupboard next to the day room. Any dirty

linen please place in the linen skips provided.

If you have any problems or concerns whilst in

the accommodation then please do not hesitate

to contact Family Accommodation Team on ext.

18700 during office hours or out of hours please

inform the Nurse caring for your child.

Local Information

Onsite Facilities

Within the children’s hospital there is:

Moment To – Situated on the ground floor near to costa coffee. This is a restaurant area which serves breakfast, lunch, dinners and hot snacks throughout the day. Closes at 8pm (times when main meals will be served will be displayed within the restaurant)

Subway – Situated within the Moment To restaurant on the ground floor. Closes at 8pm.

Café – Situated in the Eye hospital along the main hospital corridor. This is a restaurant area which serves breakfast, lunch, dinners and hot snacks throughout the day and night. Open 24 hours.

Marks and Spencer’s food store – Situated just outside the Eye hospital entrance.

Cash Machine – A cash machine is located in the atrium of the Children’s hospital facing the hospital shop.

Local Shops

NISA- Opposite the Royal Manchester Children’s entrance on Hathersage Road, the store consists of a newsagents/grocery store and post office.

There is a Tesco express, a Lidl store, Morrison’s and Superdrug store located on Oxford Road. On exiting the Children’s Hospital main entrance, turn left at the junction of Hathersage Road and Oxford Road.

There is a selection of banks that can be found on Oxford Road, leaving via the children’s main entrance and turning right at the junction of Hathersage Road and Oxford Road.

Locally on Oxford Road there are several sandwich shops, café bars and fast food shops. These can be found both to the right and left of Hathersage Road at the junction of Oxford Road.

The ‘Curry Mile’, as it is known locally, can be found to the left of Hathersage Road and Oxford Road junction and is approximately 5 minutes walk.

Laundry

The laundry room is located on the second floor of the children’s hospital, facing ward 84. The

The machines require 11 x 0.20p. Change can be given at the cashiers office located on the ground floor. Washing

powder/fabric softener is NOT supplied.

Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald house is a charity run

accommodation which provides 'home away from home' accommodation for families with children in hospital, somewhere free to stay for as long as they need to. You can ask the nurse looking after your child to refer you and your family to the house if they have not done so already.

Once you are resident in the house, up to 4 people can stay in the room (including children/babies).

Ronald McDonald also offers day facilities to families who are not staying in the house but have a child

currently in hospital. You are able to ask the nurse looking after your child for a day pass to enable you to use the day facilities.

They offer a day room for parents who can access free tea and coffee and relax in a non hospital environment. They also offer a play room for children which can also be used by siblings and visitors of the patient.

They also offer an enclosed, landscape garden which can also be used by patients, family members and visitors.

Free WIFI is available in the Ronald McDonald house and they also have computers that can be used at a small fee, £1 for 1 hour.

Transport

There are excellent bus services into Manchester City Centre. Take any bus to ‘Piccadilly’ from the stop

across the road from the junction of Hathersage Road and Oxford Road. All these buses pass Oxford Road train station.

To get to Piccadilly train station the bus number 147 leaves from the stop in the hospital side of Hathersage Road every 10 minutes.

Your Wellbeing

If you become unwell yourself whist resident at the hospital there is a drop in GP service within the accident and emergency department in the MRI. The nearest pharmacy is on Anson road or Wilmslow road. Turn left at the junction of Hathersage and Oxford Road (Oxford Road becomes Wilmslow Road).

Car Parking

If your child is on PICU, HDU or BURNS you are

entitled to park free of charge. Please ask your Nurse or Family Accommodation Support Team to arrange a car parking permit for you. Up to four car registrations can be put on this permit HOWEVER only one car

When your child is transferred to the ward you can continue to use your permit until it expires. Thereafter a reduced rate permit of £20.00 per week can be

purchased from cashiers.

If your child has been resident within the hospital for over 2 weeks then you are entitled to a free parking permit for the duration of your child’s stay.
