A Prayer Journey to the Cross – Week 2

Sunday 28 February 2021

1. Introit Holy, holy, holy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgHrNNM23p8

2. Prayer of Invocation

Early in the morning, we were greeted with the gift of this new day. Now we come to turn our eyes on you, Jesus, and seek your radiant face.

We come into your presence with thanksgiving, and declare your goodness and love. May the example of your life be the pattern for our living,

and may the wind of your Spirit blow now through our lives, changing us to be more like you. Amen

4. Prayer (by Ray Smethurst, based on the preceding hymn)

Dear Lord and Father of mankind, as we continue the Lenten journey which culminates in the remembrance of Christ’s death on the cross, we thank you that through his perfect sacrifice you have indeed forgiven our foolish ways.

As we may take upon ourselves some form of fasting during this period, may it be a sacrificial endeavour to bring our focus more specifically upon You, that we may be re-clothed in our rightful mind and in purer lives thy service find.

As we commit ourselves to quiet time and daily prayer this Lent, may it be a time of deeper reverence and praise for you, for the manifest blessings that you pour out upon us daily, many of which we take for granted or simply fail to notice. The beauty of your

creation surrounds us in this area in which we live and we frequently take no cognisance of it. Forgive us dear Lord for this transgression.

We thank you Lord that even in these difficult, and for many people, dark times, you are always with us to protect and guard and guide us; to comfort us in times of need. For those frontline workers in this COVID pandemic may you take away their strain and stress,

and flood their daily lives with the beauty of your peace. May we all recognize your still small voice of calm amidst the turmoil all around us. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

6. Reading – Mark 1:35-39

35

Early in the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went out to a

solitary place, where he prayed.

36

Simon and his companions went to look for

him,

37

and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38

Jesus replied, “Let us go on to the nearby villages, so I can preach there also. For

that is why I have come.”

39

So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their

synagogues and driving out demons.

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

That calls me from a world of care,

And bids me at my Father’s throne

Make all my wants and wishes known.

In seasons of distress and grief,

My soul has often found relief,

And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,

By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,

By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!

Thy wings shall my petition bear

To Him whose truth and faithfulness

Engage the waiting soul to bless.

And since He bids me seek His face,

Believe His Word and trust His grace,

I’ll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

I’ll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

9. Silence and Prayers of Intercession
