In vibrant cities thousands of people and vehicles are on the move every day. The demands placed on transport systems increase consistently along with the size of the metropolises. In the past 50 years alone the number of cities with over a million inhabitants has risen from 80 to 365. The mobility of the twenty-first century calls for the planning, control and networking of individual movements that have become so large in number that it is no longer possible to maintain an overview. As a result there is global demand for secure and intelligent software systems in order to master the logistic challenges.

The mobility of the twenty-first century needs to be intelligent. By this we mean systems that plan the best deployment of buses, trains and drivers, that control operations and inform passengers. Systems that identify potential. Systems capable of cooperating and networking. Systems that control and monitor fleets and reliably manage critical schedules. Systems that identify routes and analyse locations. Systems that save time to get data rather than people running.

With its standardised software products and customised IT solutions, for over 30 years IVU has enabled more than 500 customers worldwide to ensure that traffic and logistics processes run in an efficient and well-organised manner. To achieve this, we consider ongoing further and new development of IT systems carried out jointly with our customers essen-tial, keeping our customers flexible and cities on the move.

Even before a new line is built or set up, the IVU.suite systems analyse the traffic situation and draw up scenarios. Before the first vehicles leave the depot, IVU systems plan the deployment of buses, trams, trains and drivers. Before the passengers board a service, IVU solutions tell them how to reach their destination most quickly.

The daily deployment of vehicles and staff is a challenge for the dis pat-chers of urban and regional transportation. Can service planning be enhanced in a manner that takes into account driver requests, legal provisions and economic factors? How can the connection planning of buses, trams and trains be improved quickly and easily? The dispatching systems of IVU show the dispatcher at a glance which resources are in deployment and where. This enables transport companies to respond swiftly and flexibly to unforeseen events – such as by exchanging staff or bringing replacement vehicles into service. This flexibility is decisive for ensuring smooth transportation and hence service quality for passengers. Road works and other forms of traffic congestion are particularly

common in the world’s large metropolises. To enable the traffic to keep flowing in spite of this it is necessary for planning systems to be able to respond quickly and efficiently. For the systems of the IVU.suite this flexibility is an established standard. They support dispatchers in the short-term planning of vehicle and staff deployment and ensure that vehicles and people keep moving.

Buses, trams and trains are in operation around

the clock in vibrant cities. To keep traffic moving

at all times, the IVU.suite offers sophisticated

planning tools.

WELL PLANNED

WITH IVU

“ The planning and dispatching of our drivers have achieved a new standard of transparency and flexibility. Today we keep an individual working time account for each member of staff. Staff requests are already taken into account in the run-up to dispatching. This directly results in greater satis-faction and commitment.”

While passengers are on the move, IVU systems continue working: They record and process all events in real time, provide the driver with informa-tion and communicate with the control centre. At the same time they control the on-board electronics, settle ticket accounts, notify passengers at forthcoming stops of the arrival times and thereby help to boost the attractiveness of public transport and enhance operational procedures. The main control centre forms the heart of modern transportation compa-nies. It is here that all information concerning the traffic situation and journeys of the entire fleet converges. It is from here that the dispatcher communicates with each individual driver. However, the more complex the transport system, the more difficult it is to maintain an overview. Just a single construction site can upset the entire system. It is therefore impor-tant to take swift and targeted action, correct or work around dis ruption, keep operations running, ensure that passengers make their connections and communicate all activities promptly to drivers and passengers. With their extensive dispatching and communication functions, IVU systems offer immediate solutions, guarantee secure connections and provide up-to-date information at all times. Convenient passenger information and user-friendly ticket solutions including electronic ticketing serve to en-hance travel comfort and contribute towards ensuring that public transport holds its own in the competition with private transport.

The measurability of the services provided is also of particular economic interest for transport companies. After the bus has returned to the

depot, IVU systems evaluate the data recorded, calculate the utilisation and costs of individual lines and routes, measure the punctuality and reveal potential for improvement.

If the passenger is satisfied then so is the

staff. IVU systems help to enhance the quality

of transport services, thereby contributing to

customer loyalty.

ALWAYS ON THE MOVE

IN THE CITY.

IN THE COUNTRY.

ALWAYS IN THE FLOW.

Our IVU.suite offers the right support for all fields of activity of a transport company and enables the provision of integrated solutions from a single source: from planning, dispatching, fleet management, ticketing and passenger information through to the settlement of transport agreements. IVU systems plan routes, get buses running, inform passengers, ensure connec-tions, control traffic signals, dispatch drivers, monitor fleets, sell tickets, collect data and ensure efficiency. Whether complete solutions or individual components are deployed, our products are based on open standards and can be integrated in the most varied of system environments.

IVU.plan

manages the entire network and draws up the time-table, from strategic planning through to short-term changes. IVU.plan uses intelligent algorithms to en-hance vehicle circulation and services – also integrated in a single step – and in doing so takes into account all operational provisions and the specifications of the planner.

IVU.pool

consolidates data from the entire range of different planning systems across transport companies, thereby creating the basis for integrated passenger information.

IVU.vehicle

plans and controls the entire deployment of vehicles and monitors the mileage and deadlines. Depot facilities are captured in detail and manoeuvring processes enhanced. IVU.crew

manages the entire deployment of staff from long-term holiday planning through to daily dispatching and cor-rect wage settlement. The dispatcher is provided with optimum support by means of automatic driver allocation and mobile facilities for monitoring the commencement of duties and drivers are involved by being able to enter individual preferences.

IVU.fleet

is able to supply all relevant data at all times and presents them transparently at the control centre: the current traffic situation, the location of all vehicles, disruption as soon as it arises. With its comprehensive dispatching functions IVU.fleet provides solutions for dispatchers, guarantees connections and traces the movement profile of all vehicles.

IVU.cockpit

is IVU’s on-board computer software solution. It runs on both IVU.box and other on-board computers and mobile terminals such as smart phones. IVU.cockpit identifies the current location, displays the time-table situation to the driver, informs passengers and organises voice and data communication with the control centre.

IVU.box / IVU.ticket.box

is a robust and user-friendly on-board computer for buses, trams and trains. It is based on standard components, has interfaces to all common positioning and communication systems (GPS, analogue and digital radio communication, GSM, UMTS, Tetra) and controls the entire vehicle environment. As well as ticket printing, IVU.ticket.box supports all forms of electronic ticketing.

IVU.fare

is the central background system for ticketing. Here the fare data and ticket layout are simulated, transmitted to the on-board computer and validators and settled with the drivers at the end of their shift. IVU.fare pools data from the mobile and stationary vending devices and transmits them via interfaces to systems such as SAP and credit card settlement.

IVU.ticket

is the software for the sale of tickets and runs on both IVU.ticket.box and other end devices and is suitable for e-ticketing. IVU.ticket ensures cash-desk security and accepts debit and credit cards.

IVU.validator

is the new e-ticketing customer terminal. It is designed for boarding control in vehicles and can be used as sales terminal. The user interface offers very easy operation with an optional touch screen, brightness sensor and illumination of the card reader antenna.

IVU.realtime

enables the passenger to view the control centre directly. IVU.realtime takes all real-time information entering the control centre, processes it and presents it to the passenger via a wide variety of media such as real-time stop indicators or mobile phones. By being kept well informed in this way, passengers perceive the time they spend waiting to be considerably shorter and are more satisfied overall.

IVU.journey

computes the best public transport connection by bus, tram, train, taxi or bicycle at the touch of a button based on the data pooled by IVU.pool – including walking distances to and from stops. The passenger receives a detailed route and fare re commendation via a call centre, the Internet or mobile terminals and is also informed about changes during the journey. IVU.control

provides a standardised database from planning through to invoicing and pools all relevant modes of transport. IVU.control monitors punctuality and cancellations, calculates infrastructure costs and reviews compliance with transport agreements. The data recorded with IVU.fleet and IVU.fare are used to draw up freely configurable statistics on transport services, ticket sales and revenues.

VIBRANT CITIES

HAVE MANY FACES

We are fascinated by every one of them.

(14)

Dispatching large fleets of vehicles, preparing routes and tours, adminis-tering orders, locating vehicles by means of satellite navigation, checking the status of delivery on the Internet, dispatching staff and planning the efficient deployment of vehicles: All these are tasks for our IVU.waste and IVU.workforce products focussing on demanding segments – external workforce management, time-critical transportation of bulk goods and waste management.

Waste management

IVU.waste is IVU’s answer to the challenges of the waste management sector. It comprises an integrated software solution that supports the different tasks of waste management companies from order administra-tion and telematically-supported fleet management through to accounting. Thanks to its modular structure, IVU.waste can be flexibly adapted to the individual requirements of each company. There are self-contained modules available for all operational processes: customer and order administration, staff planning, route optimisation, weighing, replying, invoicing and preparing statistics and reports.

Workforce management

IVU.workforce consists of a planning centre for the automated dispatching of external workforce assignments and a mobile solution for field staff to record order data. IVU.workforce accordingly covers all external workforce tasks in the day-to-day operation of utility providers and network opera-tors from the planning and enhancement of assignments and resources through to order documentation and settlement. This enables the right field staff to reach the right location with the right tools and materials at the right time.

In vibrant cities all services need to function

smoothly every day. This also includes the invisible

ones. IVU offers the right IT solutions for utility

providers and waste management companies.

Answers to strategic questions

Location and branch planning, customised forms of address and offers are becoming increasingly important. What is the catchment area of a branch? What kind of demographic structure does this have? How much purchasing power is there? Where are areas underprovided? IVU.locate provides answers to such questions. Based on geographical information systems (GIS), the information from different data sources is superimposed onto maps. IVU.locate visualises the connections – ideal for analyses, planning and business development.

Voting systems: from ballot papers to seats

There is a reason to explain why the results of the 2009 European elections in the Netherlands and Germany were provided so quickly and reliably: the IVU.elect voting system. The system has also been used for the German parliamentary elections since 2002. IVU.elect ensures a swift matching of the results of counting and calculates the seats for parties and candidates. To this end the complicated rules contained in electoral law are reproduced precisely and the distribution of seats in parliament is calculated in accord-ance with the law. The end result is a detailed documentation of the elections and results for the returning officer.

Individual solutions

In order to carry out dealings with authorities via the Internet, mobilise public offices, more effectively channel the flow of information at public authorities or optimally plan materials, individual software solutions are called for. IVU has already implemented a large number of customised IT solutions such as web portals for land survey registers, systems for citizens’ registration offices and documentation management for the German parliament (Bundestag and Bundesrat).

Efficiency is no coincidence but always a question

of planning. Whether the task at hand concerns

a commercial or a ballot paper, reliability is the top

priority and the best foundation for vibrant cities.

PEOPLE AT IVU

Our staff gives IVU a face. Around 300 employees at eight locations, in seven countries, three segments and countless projects develop software, advise our customers, draw up concepts, implement systems and en -hance processes. Our strength is essentially based on the performance, know ledge, motivation and personality of the people who work for IVU. 15 nationalities are represented in our team – an important factor for our global project business. The continuous further development of soft ware systems for local public transport across the world and for the logistics sector entails a requirement for highly qualified specialists. Around 80% of our employees have a university degree: most of them are software engineers and architects as well as project engineers. People who think and act in a solution-oriented manner. Employees who seek complex assign ments and enrich our company with their ideas, experience and sector knowledge.

As well as gaining well-trained professionals, IVU attaches particular importance to further development within the existing team – such as with the current group of management trainees, now the third group of this kind. Our employees are important to us. Gaining, supporting and retaining them is a goal that we pursue on an ongoing basis.

Cities are dynamic systems calling for intelligent

IT solutions. The more complex the challenge is,

the more important is a strong team.

Without stochastics there would be no life insurance, without differential equations no weather reports and without mathematical optimisation transport companies would no longer be able to achieve productivity at lower cost. Complex automation tasks and decision-making processes can be solved using mathematics. For this reason IVU cooperates with the “optimisation” department of the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum for information technologies Berlin (ZIB) in the area of vehicle scheduling and staff roster enhancement.

Mathematicians from the ZIB and IVU software engineers work jointly on algorithms that enable optimisation problems to be solved completely automatically within a short period of time. In the run-up the teams analyse the requirements and conditions of transport companies and then map these onto a mathematical model. The software modules for vehicle scheduling and duty planning are now so refined that they enable virtually optimum planning to be carried out for transport companies spanning an extremely wide range of structures. Model calculations have shown that this almost always enables savings of a few percent to be achieved.

The other specialist focal points of IVU also show clearly that IVU is setting new standards in the field of traffic technologies: fleet management, tour enhancement, transport telematics and geographical information systems are connective elements to be found in many of IVU’s products and

solutions.

We develop the systems further on an ongoing basis in close collaboration with our customers. As well as the extension and expansion of the modu-lar architecture the software engineers are continuously improving user-friendliness and enhancing the efficiency of the systems. Each new release contains new additional functions that are made available to the user community.

Algorithms open up new leeway for planners,

facilitate more effective scheduling and services,

unlock savings potential and solve complex

problems.

MOVEMENT STARTS
