Beautiful weather, outstanding facilities, great speakers and a record breaking number of exhibitors are a recipe for a successful PestWorld conference. NPMA delivered an outstanding program,

providing all the elements for,

“Making Connections-Finding Answers-Increasing Profits”. There was no shortage of eateries and public art in the very clean downtown core. For those who ventured out there were plenty of sites to be seen within a couple of hours of the city. Attendance from Washington was impressive. More pictures on pages 12-15.

The opening ceremony featured the musicians String Theory” .The grand ballroom was

transformed into a giant circular harp.

I’m just back from PestWorld, and still trying the ride the wave of enthusiasm of the meeting. Should we change service rotations? Only take credit cards? Try new products? Try new software? The possibilities are endless! There were some great speakers this year. As always, it is the imple-mentation of an idea or plan rather than ten ideas or plans. I must say that Washington State is always well represented. We had more members at our table than any other state. I can think of 16 members off the top of my head. Tim Baker, Sean Bergmann, Jack Dien and myself, attended the joint state council meeting. I was curious of how many states had paid staff so I checked with the NPMA:

No State Associations:Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Volunteer Associations:Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, West Virginia and Wisconsin. As you can see there are a few large states without paid staff. Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island all have joined together to create the New England Pest Management Association. The majority of the rest of the states are run by Association Management

Companies. I say all that to say, we are very fortunate to have our own staff that know our members and the issues that may arise in our state and region. We have had only four position changes as Executive Officer since the early ninety’s. Richard Reed, Art Losey and now our illustrious Tim Baker, who can tell you almost

anything that has happened in our state for the last 20 plus years. We should be proud of our Association and our rich heritage of longevity and high standards.

It has been a very fun and rewarding year and I am looking forward to serving the rest of my time on the board. Then the gavel is going to Sean Bergmann for his second round as President. I am very excited to see what happens under his very capable leadership.

Thanks, Brad

About 15 years ago I started my business as a home inspector and SPI. Having been a contractor who worked closely with the Real Estate market, I contacted the few inspectors in the area and, out of courtesy, let them know of my plans. With one exception, they were understanding and supportive. However, that one exception apparently felt a bit threatened as he turned me into the WSDA claiming I was not licensed to do pest inspections.

So there I was, barely three months into my new career, when I get a phone call and the voice on the other end says, "Mr. Stamp, this is Dan Suomi at the Department of Agriculture and we have a problem". Crap… Anyway, to make a long story short, that was the day I got to meet Dan Suomi.

Since that day, I have come to respect Dan for all he has done to benefit the organization and the profession. Granted, some of his efforts may have involved more than a bit of, "hand slapping", for a few folks, but I think that has probably been the exception to the rule.

I am happy to report that the recent Fall seminar in Tacoma was a success, however it remains a bit of a sad event in the face of Dan's upcoming retirement. So on behalf of the mem-bership, I want to thank Dan again for all he has done, in particular helping the association by providing ongoing education at our seminars.

Look Both Ways!

Reflecting back and looking forward to a great year in 2014.

As we wind down the year of 2013 it is good to look back and say thanks to the many efforts and accomplishments of the WSPMA Membership, your faithful Association Leader-ship and to our outgoing President, Brad Thorstenson. Without the Membership’s continued support of our Association and industry through your annual dues to the WSPMA and NPMA, financial support to the PAC and attendance at our continuing education seminars, we would not have a legitimate voice in the governmental process in our state as well as federally. We would not have as many opportunities to fellowship with each other, build community in our industry and learn from each other’s experiences. We also would not have as many opportunities for learning new techniques and strategies to control the pests that invade our communities.

I would also like to say thanks to the Committees, Board and especially our beloved President, Brad Thorstenson for their hard work and donation of their time and resources to support out Association. This year Brad spearheaded the institution of an online meeting place for the Committees and Board members which lowered cost, enabled more and timely communication opportunities as well as encouraged broader involvement in the groups due to travel constraints in attending in-person meetings. Brad also helped push the ball forward in helping to install a new paid Education Coordinator, Brad Cyrier. This has been a long time desire of the Board to make sure that all of our education seminars and general membership meetings are coordinated and promoted well in advance so you will have better access and ability to plan for attendance at these meetings. Brad Cyrier has jumped in with both feet to help improve the quality and experience of our meetings and we are excited for the next twelve months and beyond.

Our current President has also encouraged the Board to make a real effort to promote involvement of our younger PMP’s in our association. I believe in this wholeheartedly as well and as incoming President, I will make this a large emphasis for 2014. The makeup of our Association Membership has grown older over the years. This gives us a wealth of experience and a unique challenge to build mentoring and involvement opportunities for the next generation of PMPs. We also can learn a ton in return from the “Y” generation who are more in tune with our fast paced and ever changing world.

We are still in the discovery phase of the adventure but will have something to roll out to the membership in the very near future.

with Jim Truslow/BASF & partner at United Pest Solutions,

Dan Huie

OSHA TRAINING

REQUIREMENTS

FORTHEREVISEDHAZARDCOMMUNICATIONSTANDARD

(HCS)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is phasing in changes to the revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200) during a multiyear period (December 1, 2013–June 1, 2016.) While there are many components of the revised standard that will affect the

professional pest management industry, this update will focus on addressing the training components employers are required to cover with their workers before December 1, 2013. OSHA believes this training, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), will ensure employees have the information they need

to better protect themselves from chemical hazards in the workplace during the transition period.

So, what is the best way to complete 2012 revised HCS training?

Once again PestWorld proved that our industry is in a constant state of change and evolution. Bayer Professional Products announced Vision 2020 which is a cooperative effort with NPMA to look ahead, and way outside the box, to what where and how we will manage pest control in the next 7 years. The focus is on technologies that we have now and those we haven’t even thought about.

There was time when a telephone operator would help you place a call. Nevada casinos had change people on the floor. And a travel agent worked tirelessly to get you where you wanted to go. I’m sure that these jobs are not the future. A very wise Member of this Association has recanted to me that, “We are a people business that just happens to control pests in the process.” While this should be the fundamental roots of our day to day work, I have to wonder if that is what the future really brings. Every operation has a culture within. Whether it is a single operator or a multi branch company,

your ideals become your way of dealing with people. Focus on growth? Always; Develop personnel? Hopefully; Keep your attention on positive and consistent contact with your customer? Maybe. Each one must assess what “technologies” are going to be best for all the people that have to embrace it. Owner/Managers may be enthralled with some new gadget or program, while office staff and field personnel consider it a royal ‘pain in the ______. Share the vision with all to assure success. And if you look at all of it and say I don’t think I need all that; it’s OK. It’s your culture.

I would encourage you to review the Pixar movie “WALL-E” and see if you observe a message about a possible future. Many folks under the age of 40 accept the changes with open arms. Most folks over the age of 60 still remember that you had to lift a garage door to get inside. Go forward wisely and remember that we are “a people business”.

Cheers!
