CRUISE & WALK

TOUR DESCRIPTION

27 May – 10 June 2013

15 Days

The Baltic Sea is an extraordinary place. Surely there is nowhere else on earth where such stunning cities, the product of centuries of culture and enterprise, are just a stone’s throw from spectacular scenery, some of it virtual wilderness. The staggeringly beautiful city of St Petersburg is the jewel in the crown, but the cobbled streets of Tallinn and the islands in the Stockholm Archipelago are sights that will live long in the memory.

After sailing from Southampton we have two days at sea before arriving at Gdynia. It’s just a short ride from here to Gdansk, city of Solidarity.

For many St Petersburg will be the most eagerly anticipated visit on our voyage. It has been said that if beauty were a commodity, St Petersburg would be the wealthiest place on earth. The Hermitage and Peterhof Palace are the two star attractions, but we will also see Nevsky Prospect, St Isaac’s Cathedral, and many stunning baroque, neoclassical and Art Nouveau buildings.

Our next stop, Tallinn, is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities. But it’s also a place where Eastern Europe’s new dynamism has led to stylish new buildings and a growth in wine bars and café society. The stunning approach to Stockholm through the thousand islands of the Stockholm Archipelago would be proof of the old adage that it is better to travel than to arrive, if Stockholm itself weren’t so immediately attractive. The city is a delight - it consists of fourteen islands, and green spaces penetrate the city from all directions. Palaces, grand hotels, museums and imposing buildings dominate the

waterfront. Whether you jump on a bus, hop on a boat, stroll by the water’s edge or down a cobbled street, Stockholm cannot fail to charm you. And then on our way again we sail once again past pastel-coloured wooden villas on islands with glimpses into remote inlets. In Copenhagen we walk from the ship passing the Little Mermaid and the painted canal-side houses of Nyhavn to the cathedral and city hall. It is Scandinavia’s most affordable city, ideal for walking around, and renowned for its summer street entertainment.

We start our journey home via the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial waterway, which runs for about 60 miles/100km linking the North Sea with the Baltic.

History... beautiful cities… wonderful scenery… this is a cruise which has it all, and at the end of the day you return to Balmoral for all the comforts and excellent food which are the hallmarks of a Fred Olsen ship.

ACCOMMODATION Our cruise ship is the Balmoral. Recently stretched in 2008 and with her public rooms refurbished, she is the largest of Fred. Olsen’s fleet with eleven decks and 738 passenger cabins. She is however still compact enough to offer an intimate, homely atmosphere and the combination of Balmoral's comfortable cabins, excellent cuisine, friendly attentive crew and on board facilities are second to none. On board facilities include two swimming pools, a fitness centre including a sauna, steam room and beauty salon, two sun decks, Jacuzzis, several lounges and bars, a card room, small casino, library, internet room and restaurants. The ship has a medical centre, a boutique, a shop where you can buy essentials such as sun cream or toiletries, and there is also a self service laundrette and ironing room on board.

After dinner there are always shows, reviews and evenings of cabaret for your entertainment. Choose from the Neptune Lounge for an evening show or perhaps head to the Lido bar for an after dinner drink and to enjoy the resident band. Or maybe even try your hand at the Casino?

Our accommodation is in twin and single cabins with shower and wc. All cabins are equipped with individually controlled

air-conditioning, television, hairdryers, tea and coffee making facilities and a safety deposit box. Balmoral has a non-smoking policy on board and smoking is not permitted in any cabin. Allocated cabins will be an inside cabin (normally on the Atlantic Deck) unless you have paid a supplement to upgrade. Those booking single cabins may not necessarily be allocated a twin cabin for sole use. Your cabin steward will keep your cabin in immaculate condition throughout your stay, replacing any linen or towels as or when required. Separate towels are provided for poolside use. Balmoral operates a satellite telephone system, with telephones in each cabin, and personal mobile phones enabled for international roaming should work on board.

The voltage on board the Balmoral is supplied at 220 volts (requiring a continental style 2-pin plug). If you are in any doubt as to the appropriate voltage to use your electrical appliances on board, please check with the ship’s Reception Desk. Adapters are usually available for hire on board, or may be bought at the ship’s shop.

Payment on board is in Sterling, and a credit account system is operated on board allowing purchases to be charged to your account which must be settled at the end of your cruise – see the Currency section for more details.

TRAVEL INFORMATION Southampton is the ‘Cruise Capital’ of the UK. Fred. Olsen cruise ships mainly depart from the City Cruise Terminal. However occasionally they may use the Mayflower or QE2 cruise terminals. Please refer to your cruise embarkation instructions. If you wish to travel by car and park for the duration of your cruise, you can pay for and reserve parking in advance directly with the relevant company. Alternatively, if you’re being dropped off or collected by taxi or private car, they can drive right up alongside the terminal building, with experienced staff on hand to help with your luggage.

(6)

http://www.nationalexpress.com/ home.aspx If you prefer to book over the phone, please call 08717 818178 (0044 8717 818178 from overseas). Calls cost from 10p per minute plus network extras. National Express and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offer a dedicated service from London Victoria to/from Southampton Cruise Terminal. Portlink also offer a range of coach services, designed to make joining departures easier and more convenient for those who prefer not to drive. PortLink operates dedicated coach services from the north east and north west of England to south coast ports, as well as transfers between rail and coach stations across Britain and the local cruise terminal and airport to port connections. For more information or to book, please contact PortLink on 01794 524031.

Travelling by rail

Passengers travelling by rail to Southampton should alight at Southampton Central Station. On arrival at Southampton Central Station passengers should proceed with their baggage to the Southbrook Road/Blechynden Terrace exit, where a courtesy transit coach (operated by PortLink) will take you to the berth where the ship will depart from. The coaches will depart Southampton Central approximately every half hour from 1330hrs (dependent upon sailing times).

Please call Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Administration Department on 01473 742424 for full details or alternatively, please call PortLink directly on 01794 524031.

EMBARKATION

On arrival at the port you will be directed to the baggage drop-off area where porters will be on hand to take your luggage from you. Your luggage must be clearly labelled with the baggage tags issued with your travel documents as without labels attached, your luggage will not be accepted. Your luggage will then be taken directly to your cabin after passing through security checks. Please allow up to two hours for your cabin baggage to be delivered to your individual cabin. Dress code for your first evening is always smart casual.

At check-in you will need to produce both your ticket and a valid passport, so please ensure you have both readily to hand. All guests are required to check-in no less than 1 hour before sailing time and exact details regarding where and when to check-in for your cruise will be advised in your ticket pack. When checking in you will be issued with your ship’s pass and boarding card. You may then relax in the cruise terminal lounge until embarkation commences. Southampton cruise terminal offers refreshment, telephone and toilet facilities.

Your ship’s pass acts as your security pass and on board account card for the full duration of the cruise. Each time you embark or disembark the ship your card will be swiped to record whether you are on board or ashore. In addition your hand luggage may be subject to either x-ray scanning or a manual search each time you re-join the ship.

DISEMBARKATION At least 24 hours before the end of your cruise, the full disembarkation instructions will be placed within your cabin. For operational reasons these may differ slightly from the general information shown below.

On arrival into Southampton the ship has to be cleared by Customs and Immigration Officials before disembarkation can commence. This enables you to have a leisurely breakfast, vacate your cabin, and take a comfortable seat in one of the public lounges before being

called forward for

disembarkation.

In general, disembarkation commences from 0800hrs and guests usually leave the ship in deck order (with guests occupying cabins on the highest deck disembarking first) but it can take up to two hours for the entire ship to be cleared. You should plan your onward journey accordingly but if you have specific onward travel connections and need to disembark the ship quickly, please liaise with the reception on board.

HEALTH & FITNESS Although most cruises experience calm seas, there is always the possibility of heavy weather. It is possible in these circumstances that some clients may be susceptible to sea-sickness. You may wish to consider packing some travel motion sickness medication which can greatly reduce any symptoms. Please liaise with your local pharmacist or doctor

(7)

for advice regarding particular medication.

PASSPORTS & INSURANCE Passport, visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements. It is a condition of carriage that all guests must hold a full and valid passport, the validity of which is dependent upon the destinations visited. Some ports of call will require at least 6 months after your return to the UK. Since you will be denied boarding if unable to present your passport at check-in, please ensure your passport is kept in your hand baggage.

In 2013 we will be working with the same local agent as Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and passengers are exempt from obtaining a Russian visa if joining the groups walking programme.

Should you wish to explore independently in St Petersburg, or to leave the ship without the group however, you will still need to apply for a visa (please note this is not included in our holiday price).

Advice on vaccinations is available from your GP, or can be obtained from the Medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad (MASTA). In addition, general travel advice is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.fco.gov.uk/travel

It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of

replacement documents and your return to the UK. This should also allow you to change money.

Please take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you - it will help in the event of an emergency. See section 1 of our General Information Booklet for further details. It is important to check your EHIC is current as it is issued with an expiry date.

Please also remember your insurance details – the party leader will ask for this information locally and you will not be able to join our walking and activity programme without this information. Your holiday insurance should cover you for guided walking below 2000m.

LUGGAGE

Your luggage allowance is 200lbs or 90kg. For safety reasons, each piece of luggage should weigh less than 44lbs or 20kg.

If you are travelling with National Express to/from the port, you are allowed to take onto a service one or two medium sized suitcases or rucksacks (no more than 20kg per item) free of charge and one small piece of soft hand luggage. In this context hand luggage means something that is capable of being stored in the overhead rack or beneath the seat. With the exception of brief cases, no hard-shelled cases, wheelie bags or hard-framed rucksacks/back packs will be allowed on board. Additional pieces of hold luggage, or ‘outsized’ items, will be permitted, subject to space being available, and on payment of a charge for each extra piece. The charges will be £10.00

single journey per item (one journey can be multi-leg) or £15.00 return journey per item. Please ensure you advise National Express in advance if you wish to pre-book additional luggage.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Daytime wear

Daytime wear is casual with comfortable shoes for walking around deck. A lightweight jacket or coat is recommended for the early evening when the sun sets. You may also like to take a towel and swimwear as Balmoral has two small swimming pools & Jacuzzis. Towels are provided at the poolside should you forget your own.

During the day casual wear is allowed in the restaurant but not swimwear.

Evening wear

During your cruise there will be some casual as well as ‘themed’ evenings such as ‘Tropical Evening’ or ‘British Night’ (details will be sent with your travel documents). The style for these evenings is informal with gentlemen requested to wear jacket and tie (lounge suit or sports jacket is fine) and ladies informally smart.

On formal evenings, gentlemen are encouraged to wear ‘black tie’, although a dark suit and tie would suffice, with ladies elegantly dressed in cocktail or evening dress.

Clothing and equipment for walking

No special equipment is required for our city based walking

(8)

CURRENCY

The currency on board ship is sterling. A credit account system is operated on board allowing bar drinks, wine in restaurants, laundry charges, purchases from the shop and any other incidental expenses to be automatically charged to your account. Payment is required at the end of your cruise.

The credit cards American Express, Diners Club, EuroCard, MasterCard and Visa are accepted on board but please note there is a 2% service charge for bills settled by credit card.

Visa debit cards, personal cheques and travellers’ cheques are also valid but Maestro, Solo, or Electron debit cards are NOT accepted.

The ship operates a Bureau de Change on board, where currency can be purchased or sold subject to local currency restrictions. All major currencies are stocked based on the cruise destinations including Norwegian Kroner with no commission charge and competitive rates. You may purchase foreign currency with travellers cheques or cash.

TIPPING

Fred. Olsen operates a system whereby the recommended level of gratuities will be automatically added to guests’ on-board accounts at the end of the cruise for their convenience. Ramblers Worldwide Holidays include the tips for the dining room waiters but £2 per guest per day will now be added to all on board accounts for cabin stewards.

Anyone wishing to vary the amount given will be able to do so via reception and guests will be free to remove the charge from their onboard account and tip the relevant staff in the traditional ‘envelope & cash’ method if they prefer.
