Presidents Message –October 2020

I am sure many of you were looking forward to our re-opening of Oct. 5 after 204 days closed. We have had to re-evaluate these plans as our neighboring communities went to “Orange Level” effective Monday Sept 28th . The Executive met on Sept 28th and in

consultation with the rest of the Board, have decided to postpone the opening until at least Oct 26th. I know many of you were excited, but due to that the fact many of our members live in these areas and the increased numbers overall, we felt it was the responsible thing to do.

When we do reopen the first groups involved will be: Yoga (Jen), Yoga (Leanne), Tai Chi (Phyllis) , Wood carvers (Albert), Writers group (Linda) and Spanish (Peter).

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Lorraine Crawford for convening the 2020 “Take out Fall Supper”. It took so many people to make this a success and I can’t list everyone (I am worried about missing a name but you know who you are). We had crews in on Friday, Saturday and Sunday busy working and all adhering to the protocols and we received donations of potatoes, carrots, cranberry sauce.

THANK YOU Everyone

We have also had a number of people donate money not only for the Fall Supper but to the Gimli New Horizons Centre as well. During these difficult times it is so much appreciated by myself, the office staff and the Board and we thank you.

ACTIVITIES - At this time we have no confirmed reopening date. What could happen (based on what other Centres are doing)

- masks mandatory

- pre-register for activities (no drop ins) as we have to know how many participants attending as it’s based on size of room

- activities may not be on same day of week or at time it used to run

- no evening activities

- not all activities will resume right away

- only one activity per room - one morning and one afternoon to ensure proper cleaning between them

- hand sanitizer use upon entering facility

- volunteer at the door to screen entrants to building (if you are sick you aren’t coming in LOL)

- members only

We have to keep in mind the safety for all our members.

Membership & Volunteers - Vera & Linda

We at New Horizons 55+ are about to embark on a very different year beginning when we re-open the centre. Thanks to all of you who have renewed your membership and to our new members. Every membership helps. We have 302 renewed already.

Thanks to all the members who are so willing to volunteer. Once we can open the club we will be calling again.

We live in a beautiful community! Stay safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

Also please note that not all the memberships coming in to the office are being completed fully. Many are not signed, missing checking off the volunteer section, or the initials are missing in the section for the disclaimers. Please ensure you double check the form is completed before sending back to the centre.

MEMBERSHIP At New

Horizons

So this year is a very unusual year for all of us. No one could have predicted that we would be closed for this long (March 17 - now). So what does this really mean for the Centre?

Well no activities = no revenue coming into the Centre. We have applied for some grants to help with some much needed work but they are not guaranteed to be received. We are hoping that volunteers can help pitch in where possible. Members will undoubtedly be wondering what is happening with membership. We are currently taking memberships at the Centre during office hours - Monday to Friday from 9 - 4.

We need to stress (more than any other year) the importance of membership. It’s not only your pass into the Centre to attend your favorite activity….. it’s so much more…… it’s your support to keep the Centre going.

We need membership even if you don’t attend any functions or activities. It tells us you are there to help us keep the doors open and the Centre operating. So when we renew the upcoming annual memberships please renew with pride - our Centre thanks you!

Also remember that this

year we didn’t have many of

our fundraising events

-Perogies, Friday lunch,

Pancake Breakfast, Social

club events (Halloween

party & Christmas Gala) so

along with less activities

happening at our Centre we

are definitely hoping

A downloadable version is also available for you to print and fill out.
