Driving value, alignment and sustainability

Supply Chain Management is a

multi-disciplinary programme designed to help you conceive innovative strategies and deploy differentiated solutions that can help your organisation serve customers in an optimal fashion. With greater customer sophistication, increasing network fragmentation, and fast-paced globalisation, the primary role of supply chain management, along with the coordination of material, information and cash flows, has become complex. The five-day programme is designed to address these issues through key concepts that underpin supply chain

development. These are supported by three guiding principles: value, alignment and sustainability.

Value

A manager’s primary responsibility is to create value and the supply chain manager is no exception. In managing inventory, determining batch sizes, granting payment terms on a sales contract, negotiating a procurement contract or investing in a new technology, he or she must undertake only value-creating initiatives. A value-based management approach is therefore crucial in defining value in an unambiguous fashion and in cascading it throughout the organisation to make it consistent with a manager’s daily responsibilities and performance targets.

Alignment

While value creation is necessary, it does not automatically lead to value capture. To ensure that each member of a supply chain receives rewards that are commensurate with his or her contribution to the network, alignment is a must for all members. Given that modern supply chains are decentralised ecosystems with no clear command-and-control structures, alignment does not happen naturally.

In the short run, managers must design effective economic incentives while working towards the establishment of trust-based win-win solutions.

Sustainability

Like products and processes, supply chain solutions have finite lifetimes. It is therefore necessary to continuously assess the validity of the current supply chain solution and to monitor the evolution of markets and technologies, as well as actively measuring and managing risk to ensure not just one but a series of

competitive advantages. Judicious choices in product, process and supply chain design must then be made to ensure a smooth transition as markets evolve.

Programme content

The Supply Chain Management programme

focuses on improving the key flows in the supply chain by optimising business processes, organisational structures and enabling technologies. It gives managers a range of skills and frameworks, helping them, for example, to understand how product and process development can be integrated into the supply chain or to figure out what really drives financial performance. It is also clear that there are many new opportunities emerging with technological breakthroughs and global manufacturing, making new sorts of partnerships along the supply chain possible. Knowing how to deploy enabling technologies rapidly and effectively can vastly increase both the efficiency of network operations and the effectiveness of customer service.

Core processes

This section examines the different physical and market mediation roles of the supply chain. Physically, the supply chain links the activities of production, storage and transportation. As a market mediation tool, it ensures that products reaching the marketplace match customer expectations. Different corporate strategies can be adopted to fulfil both of these roles while satisfying all of the stakeholders concerned. New organisational forms

Having gained an understanding of basic flows, the next step in building supply chain excellence is to focus on the organisational forms that enable it. Participants will have understood the necessity of moving from a functional organisation to a process-oriented one, so they will learn how to collaborate across functions, organisations and continents, and how this can become a source of competitive advantage.

Emerging infrastructure technologies It is clear that new information technologies have decisively changed supply chain relationships. This section focuses on how they can be used to bring about new partnerships and ways of working. Enterprise Services Architecture and other infrastructure technologies, including the Internet, are discussed.

Crucially, the focus is on implementation challenges, both in terms of the organisation and technology.

Europe Campus

Fontainebleau, the home of INSEAD’s Europe Campus, is spread across 8 hectares. Nestled in the vast forest of Fontainebleau, the modern architecture of the campus blends harmoniously with the green and leafy surroundings. Facilities are of the highest standard and include

28 lecture theatres, 2 restaurants, a bar, a bookshop, extensive library resources and a fully equipped gym.

Asia Campus

The Asia Campus is situated in the greenery of the Buona Vista area, the country’s ‘knowledge hub’, and is just 25 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the financial district. It occupies a 2.8-hectare site and has 7 amphitheatres with a total capacity of 500 and an 85-room residence.

Abu Dhabi Campus

Abu Dhabi is the home of INSEAD’s third campus, which is just 25 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the ‘Corniche’. This new, 12-storey, 6,000 square-metre building, purposely designed for Executive Education, presents a whole new world of possibilities for management education in the Middle East.

Places on the programmes are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis, taking into consideration the applicant’s level, objectives and the diversity of the classes.

We recommend that you submit your completed application form as early as possible,

preferably 6 weeks prior to programme commencement. The Admissions Committee will review your application and advise you on the outcome as soon as possible. Note: all our Open-enrolment Programmes are taught in English and participants should be able to exchange complex views, listen and learn through the medium of English. Calendar 2011/2012

Tuition fees*

The programme fee covers tuition, course materials and lunches on working days as well as the closing dinners. It does not include travel, accommodation and other incidentals. Participants will have to settle accommodation expenses and other incidentals before the end of the programme.

*Fee subject to change. For programmes delivered in France, VAT (19.6%) to be added for companies based in France, or for European companies where no VAT number is supplied. For programmes delivered in Singapore, GST (7%) to be added for Singapore-registered companies.
