Q 1. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions. [20 marks] When we are young, we like to play pranks (jokes) on older people, and teachers are no exception to this. Here is a story by Rabindranath Tagore about one such attempt by a group of schoolboys. In those days students stayed in school with their teachers and went home during vacations.

The vacation was over and the boys were returning back to school by train. A new Sanskrit teacher was coming in the new academic year. He was called KaliKumar Tarkalankar.

“We refuse to study under the new teacher,” said the boys. A naughty boy had already made by a funny rhyme about the new teacher, which he called, “The Sacrifice of the Black Pumpkin Fresh Chilli.” This was a joke on the new teacher’s name; his name was Kalikumar which means Black. They were repeating this rhyme aloud in chorus.

At Adkhola station, an elderly gentleman boarded the train with a bedroll, a bag and an earthen pot. A rowdy boy called Chintan shouted at him, “No room here!”The old man said, “The train is packed; there’s no room anywhere. I’ll sit in the corner and won’t

have a new teacher for this year, The Black Pumpkin,” and the boys started chanting their rhyme and laughing aloud.

At the next station, the old man got off the train briefly to have a bath. When he returned, Chintan said, “It’ll be better if you move to another compartment, Sir.” “Why?” asked the old gentleman. “There are rats all over. See what they’ve done to your pot and bundle.” The old man saw that the sweets in the earthen pot had been eaten and the mangoes from his bag disappeared. “Poor rats, they must be hungry,” said the old man. “I would have brought more sweets but I didn’t know there were so many rats in the train.”

The next station the old man suggested changing his compartment, but the boys insisted that the old man should travel with them. The old man agreed and stayed back in the same compartment. The old man bought sweets from a vendor and handed everyone a plate of sweets saying, “This time the rats won’t go hungry.” The boys also feasted on a basket of mangoes bought by the old man. The boys now jumped in excitement, they asked the old man, “Tell us where you are going and to do what...”

The old man told the boys he was looking out for a job. He also told them he is a Sanskrit teacher. They clapped and said, “In that case, it will be great to have you in our school.” The old man asked back, “Would the management give me a job?”

All the boys screamed out, “Oh they will have to! we will not let the Black Pumpkin come to our school. You can be our new teacher.” “Very well, then take me to your school.” said the old man.

Finally, the train arrived at the station. The Secretary of the school himself was waiting at the station. Seeing the old gentleman, he said, “Welcome Sir, Mr. Kalikumar! The school is waiting for you.” And he bent down to touch the old man’s feet.

The boys looked at each other and hung their heads in shame. Questions
