As you're reading these instructions, keep the camera handy; then practice each oper.ation as it appears in the manual. Before making any important pictures-a trip or some special event-shoot a magazine of film, including a few flash pictures. This gives you practice and provides a check on your equipment. Sight through the eyepiece in the back of the camera. In here you see the combined rangefinder and viewfinder. Concentrate on the triangle. When the camera is n.of focused, trvo images of your subject appear in the triangle. When the camera is focused, these images are superimposed to form a single image. Move the lens opening pointer to the red dot between 5.6 and 8 for Kodachrome Film Daylight Typ" - to 11 if you're using Kodak Ektachrome Film Daylight Type. 2 Cock the shutter by pressingthe cocking lever down. 3 Focuson the subject;then composethe picture. a Hold the camerasteady;then pressthe shutterreleaseleoer all the aay doun with a slow squeezingaction. (The releasewill not operateif the shutter is not cocked, or if the fflm has not been advanced to an unexposedframe.) 5 Advance the fflm to get ready for the next picture. o For intentional double exposures,trip the releaseon the bottom front of the camera. (19) You'll want to make someflash pictures to really appreciateyour Signet 40 Camera. They're as easy to make as outdoor shots-some folks think even easier.This is'becauseflash is always ready when you need it. The Signet 40 was designed to use the Kodalite Super-M Flasholder digeptly,and doesnot require the use of a bracket. Two reflectorsare available for this flasholder: The4:inchreflectoris for usewith No. 5 qnd No. 25 lompsonly, The 3-inch reflector is designed primarily for the small M-2 lomps. However, No. 5 and 251ampscan also be used with this reflector. Synchronization The Kodak Synchro 400 Shutter synchronizes No. 5, No. 25, and M-2 lamps at speed 25 (1/25 second).Electronic fash units (zero-time delay) aLe synchrbnizedby this shutter at all speeds. 16". (20) Power for the Flasholder Batteries are not included with the flasholder. Get two 116-voltDenlite batteries (each bailery should test B16amperes). For more dependable lamp firing, a Kodalite Midget B-C Flashpack and I5-volt photoflash battery or" ,eco.mended. With B-C (battery-condenser) power in your fasholder, fash failures due to rveak batteries are eliminated batteries last Jonger, too. (21) How lo Install the Battery I Remove the btrck cover by loosening the slotted sclerv. 2 When trvo 1)4-voltpenlite batteries are used, insert both ltase doun as illustrated. N4ake sure the cloth pull-tab is under the inside battery. 3 When the Kodalite N{idget B-C Fltrshpack is usecl, be sure to remove any batteries r'vhich may be in the flasholder. Hook the end of the flrrshpack rvith the plus (f) n-rarkinto the small hole in tl're upper spring in the flasltolder. Push the bottom in, until it snaps in place. Place the 1S-volt battery in the B-C flashpack. N'Iake sure the positive (f ) end of the battely is next to the plus sign on the B-C unit. Caution: If the btrttery is placed in the B-C unit r'vith the negative (-) end up, the battery r,vill be exhaustecl in a matter of rninutes. 4 Replace the cover and tighten the slotted screw. 18.

(23) Atlaching the Flasholder Attach the flasholcler to the camela by placing the posts on the side of the flasholder into the holes on the side of the camera. Tighten the knob on the opposite side of the flasholder htrndle. The ctrmera is now ready for fl:rsh. The socket on the Kodalite Suner-N{ Flarsholder u'ill trccept the bayonet-base ancl NI-f lamps uithout the use of an trdirpter'.LIse N o. 5 or 25 flashlamps lLith the 4-inch reflector . Use L[-2 f,ashlanps roith the 3-it"tchreflector. To Make q Flash Picture I If the base of the flashltrmp is talnished, rub it on a rough surface. Turn the lamp until the pins on the base line up r'vith the slots in the socl<et;then push the ltrmp until it snaps in place. 2 Set the shutter speed pointer to 25 and cock the shutter.. 20.

(24) 3 Focus on the subject to determine the disttrnce in feet vou are from the subiect. 4 Refer to the click-stop flash calculator on the back of the fl:rsholder to determine the correct lens opeling to use. o. Set tire correct arrorv and dot under the name of the film you're using. The recl arro$' nnd dot on the slide are for the 4-inch reflector'- the black arror,v and dot are for the S-inch reflector'. b. From the numbers opposite the rvorcl noer, find the one rvhich is closest to the focus dist:rnce. c. Dilectly under this nurnber, is the correct lens opening to use, d. Here's an example: Suppose you have Kodachrome Type F in your canela and you are using the 4-inch reflector. Then the red clot on the slide is set directly under the dot for KODACHRON,{E-F. If you ffnd that the distance does not fall directly above a marked lens opening, set the lens opening pointer between marked openings. 5. Take the picture by slowly pressing the shutter lelease.. 6 Push the r,eup RELEAsEbutton near the too of the flasholder handle to release the used lamp. (See page 19.) Caution: Since lamps may shatter when fashed, the use of a protective transparent screen over the refector is recommended. Never insert a lamp in the lamp socket until the flasholder has been connected to the camera. Do not fash lamps in an explosive atmosphere,. 22.

(29) . Don't let your camera keep "banker's hours." Some of the best pictures are made after the sun sets.If you have color film in the camera.then use flash. If you're the kind who likes to experiment, then get a magazine or two of the new super-fastKodak Tri-X Film. The fast f /3.5 ler's on your camera will enable you to make pictures in ordinary lighted rooms. Load the camera with Kodak Tri-X Film, and set the shutter at 25 and the lens opening at 3.5. Whenever possible, use an exposuremeter. When the light is too poor to take a picture at 5 (l/5 second),then make "B" a long exposureby using the shutter setting. At this setting, the shutter stays open 4s long as the shutter releaseis held down. For lolg exposures, use a Kodak Metal Cable ReleaseNo. 5 in the socketon the shutter housing. Hold the camera rock-steadywith the Kodak Flexiclamp. Nole: To odvonce the film when o coble releose is used, press qnd hold the rewind releose while moving the film odvonce lever; lhen let go of lhe releose.
