Executive Director Report

December 13, 2012

Winter Light…and Dark Rituals

The grades have completed their winter light events. Kindergarten’s lantern walk was delayed due

to rain, but was held last week without interruption. Grades 1 through 4 held their spirals in the

barn. Ms. Anca held a unique coming of age ceremony for her students and grades 6 through 8

participated in the winter walk at Shollenberger. The winter assembly is scheduled for Thursday

December 20 at 11:00 AM.

Spring Enrollment Starting Up

Our recent tour had a strong turnout with over 16 families attending. Most families are from

Petaluma with a large showing from our local Waldorf nursery programs. We have several new

students who are shadowing or have already enrolled in lower grade classes.

Facilities Update

The Fairgrounds Authority is now requiring a CEQA negative declaration for placement of the 2

nd

grade portable. This is a substantial setback. We are working with CFFA to generate a report, but

his will likely push off approval. We do not have a timeline at this time. We have experienced

leaks in the lower campus and the Kinder building during the last rain. The lower campus was

fixed with diversion of downspout runoff, and the Kinder buildings benefited from an emergency

patch with the help of parent volunteer Mark Condon and friend Don Currie.

Northbay Alliance

The Alliance of Northbay Waldorf School met last week in Napa. Stonebridge played host to our

local schools as well as visitors from Ukiah, Oakland, and Humboldt. Topics covered included a

lengthy conversation on Common Core implementations, enrollment practices, transition

kindergarten, special education, facilities, and faculty development. The network is growing in

experience, expertise and diversity with educators arriving from many different professional

backgrounds that create a vibrant and nuanced conversation on these topics. The feeling of

collaboration and collegial support is strong and we look forward to strengthening our support

through document sharing and online conversation.

Hobbit Hill

In a timely coincidence with the release of the 1

st

installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies,

Live Oak completed its Hobbit Hill project in the K-2 playground. Special thanks go again to

Stephanie Taylor and Michael Schoeman for heading up the project.

Strategic Planning

We discussed how the charter renewal process will cover many of the aspects of

the strategic plan, but that it needs to be separate document. We discussed

whether it’s feasible to do both this year. DE agreed to look over the

recommendations from Lynn Kern from two years ago to see what progress has

been made.

IV.

Charter Renewal Planning

We discussed the timeline of the renewal and possible composition of a

committee or work group—parents, faculty, board, admin.

V.

Board Agenda

We reviewed a draft agenda for December 13 and made several additions and

revisions

VI.

Board Packets

We discussed the importance of the timeliness of board members receiving their

board packets. We agreed that a draft agenda would be sent to admin shortly

after the monthly executive committee meeting.

VII.

Calendaring

The December meeting of this committee conflicts with the faculty holiday party.

We agreed to determine the next meeting via email as KD was absent.

development of a Charter Review/Renewal Committee as new Item L,

moving the current Items L,M,N down respectively - all approved

F. Review and Approve Conflict of Interest Policy

The policy language was amended to change "designated employee" to

"interested party" and to include the immediate family of interested parties

under the policy.

G. Approve Resolution on LEA Status

The pros and cons of pursuing LEA status for the school was discussed.

The resolution was amended by adding

"#4 The Board affirms it right to determine its LEA status."

SJ moved to approve the resolution as amended - all approved

H. Discuss Financial Policy (8:00)

Draft will be revised and brought back - not wanting to tie ED hands…..shared

responsibility

I. Discuss impact of election on budget

Due to the passage of Prop 30., the budget will not need to be drastically

reworked.
