We want to hear
from YOU!
Annual Survey
Now Open
Each year the Live Oak Board
and administration take a careful look at the health and vibrancy of our school in the form of our Annual Survey. Your feedback in this survey provides vital information about what the school is doing effectively and, conversely, where we can improve.
Please take a few minutes to make sure your opinion is represented, as the Board uses the information from the Survey in future planning. Our goal is at least one response for each
student at Live Oak Charter School. The Board will provide a summary of the survey responses to the community later in the spring.
You can find the 2017-18 online Annual Survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/LOCS2017-18
Please take 10 minutes to share your thoughts

…continued from page 1Things Go Better with Help
The more you help, the more FUN we’ll all have, and the more FUNDS we’ll raise. Please …
• Donate: Are you creative, talented, wealthy? Wow. Can we be your friend? Point is, you can make something, offer a service, host a “buy-in” party with other parents, or, if you don’t have talents (or time), you can donate $$. Fill out a donation form here: https://tinyurl.com/redrooster2018donate
• Solicit: Can you ask your company to donate goods or services to the auction, or to donate money as a Sponsor? This one’s a little tricky, so contact Lisa Gordon: [email protected].
• Volunteer: We know you have a lot of other stuff going on. But this event has a lot of moving parts, and getting them all fully operational requires a lot of effort from a lot of parents. Sign-up sheet:

• Perform: Wanna be a star? Of course you do! Contact Alia Beeton: [email protected].

Attendance
Update
Aug 14 - Dec 21
96.6%
You have probably read about (or maybe experienced first-hand) the high rate of flu currently going around Sonoma County. This is the time of year when cold and flu illnesses can cause a dip in LOCS’s attendance rate. We hope that you and your family are able to stay healthy - remember to wash hands regularly! We are extremely grateful for all that you do to support your child attendance at school every day. Our goal is a 98% attendance rate.
Please remember that last year LOCS lost over $100k in funding due to absences.
• If your child must miss part of the day, have him or her attend as much as possible. Your child will be counted.

Drumming Class
By Mark Escalera
Eyes closed to help facilitate that inward focus. Eyes open but with that faraway look that belies that inward focus. A student staring at their hands as they play the drum. A small smile on the face as the head and shoulders bob around, getting into the groove at hand. Such are the delightful sights one might see at one of the five drum classes at Live Oak which are attended by 4th through 8th Grades.
One of the oldest forms of musical expression, drumming allows one to come into their physical being in both an individual and
cooperative way. The student has to be responsible for their section’s individual rhythm. A pattern that then like a puzzle piece has to fit with the other rhythms in the ensemble. Put together the puzzle pieces create a whole, a groove that facilitates a sense of joy in being part of something greater
than one’s self.
Alliance for Public Waldorf Education Conference
Representatives of the Board and Faculty attended the Alliance For Public Waldorf Education's annual conference over Presidents' Day Weekend held at George Washington Carver High School of Arts and Sciences, a beautiful public Waldorf school campus in Sacramento. The conference sought to continue the Alliance’s ongoing conversation about widening the circle of students served by Public Waldorf Education through a deepening of knowledge and experiences with culturally relevant practices. This year’s keynote speaker, Kim John Payne addressed the question “Who’s in the classroom?” in order to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Live Oak's own Leah Brosio led a breakout session for middle school faculty, while other members of our community participated in workshops on topics ranging from intercultural Waldorf education, literacy in early grades, practical applications of curative education in the classroom, and more.
The conference was a great opportunity to be spend time with and learn from others in the public Waldorf education world, and we all came away with fresh ideas and new inspiration.
Dine, Donate, & Skate!
Fri, Feb 9 - 5:30-7:30pm
February is right around the corner and that means it's time for the Fun Committee's annual
LOCS Family Skate Night at Cal Skate.
Get ready to lace up your skates (or blades) Fri, Feb 9th, from 5:30 to 7:30 and skate the night away to family-friendly tunes.
• $6 to skate
• $2 to rent old-school quad skates (nothin' wrong with stability, folks!) • $4 to rent inline skates
Feel free to bring skates from home to forgo skate rental prices. Not so stable on the rink? No problem. Cal Skate rents Skate Mates (like walkers – but for skaters) for $5 each.
But wait! There’s more!!Rohnert Park’s Chipotle (6325 Commerce Blvd) is hosting a Dine N Donate opportunity for Live Oak
students, friends and family members on the same night from 4-8pm.
Click Here to print out the flier (or save it on your phone). Mention you’re there for LOCS, show them the flyer, and Chipotle will donate a very generous 50% of the proceeds to the school. That’s something worth taco-ing about. ;-)
Winter Spiral Gratitude
by Julie BecknerKing Winter had a strong presence at our Winter Spiral held on December 18th and 19th. With chilly temperatures our ceremony took place inside Herzog Hall. The hall was softly lit with acoustic music playing as families gathered in a semi-circle to witness this quiet, intimate event. Each child walked the evergreen pathway through winter’s darkness to gather the light held within that will sustain them through the long, cold season of King Winter’s reign.
Our event would not have been possible without the help and support from our community.
Thank you to Ann Ingraham, Vanessa Nelson, Patrick Mundy for the beautiful evergreens and to Kymmie Phipps for the 4 lovely evergreen trees.
A gracious thank you to Rebecca McDowell, Patrick Boyd and Laura Peshek for help in setting up the spiral.
Thank you to Ms. Julie, Jen Stevens, Ms. Lois, Corryn DeGelabert, and Ms. Lemesh whose graceful presence helped deepen the experience for their classes.
Special appreciation to Sean Hayes, Grandpa Berka and Brian Lemesh who filled the room with soft, beautiful music.
Thank you to Heather Haley, Chaela Eskelson, Carrie Whittier and Jacqueline Machado who helped cleanup the spiral.
And thank you to Jasmine Gerber whose beautiful vision helped foster a most loving celebration.
Class Coordinator Gratitude
Let's hear it for our Class Coordinators - volunteers who show up every other week throughout the school year to get the inside scoop on what is happening at Live Oak, and then pass it on to their respective classes. This behind-the-scenes job is instrumental in getting information out to Live Oak families in a consistent and timely manner. And thanks to Ms. Kim and Ms. Denise, whose support and positive attitude help create the collaborative energy that powers the Class Coordinators throughout the school year.
The Kindergarten Class Coordinators are Molly Anderson, Michaelann Thompson and Gwendy Todd.
The Grades Class Coordinators are Shelly Dieterle, Carrie Whittier, Lisa Gordon, Katie Sveinson, Aimee Ward, Kelly Geiser, Tami Carlson, Annika Speckhart, and Erin Pasero.
