S E N I O R S E N T I N E L

FROM THE DIRECTOR

As I am writing this, it’s 42 degrees below zero with the wind chill. Brrr…Right?

So, let’s think SPRING! Spring brings us alot to look forward to. We have:

Mardi Gras, March 5

Ash Wednesday, March 6

Daylight Savings time begins March 10…and along with it, longer days!

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17

First Day of Spring, March 20

While we are waiting for those warmer days, we will have plenty of fun activities scheduled for you here at the Senior Center. And be sure to join us on Saturday mornings!

Spending time with us is a great way to beat the winter blues!

Other ways to beat the blues…

- Get a haircut!

- Clean out cabinets and closets at home! Donate items you no longer use to a local charity.

- Spend time with family and friends!

- Buy a colorful new shirt!

- Start planning a container garden!

- Keep walking (or riding bike)! Get outside to walk if the weather allows.

Spring is coming! Hang in there through the last of the cold weather. Soon we will see warmer temps and lots of

sunshine!

Renee Kipp, Director With all good wishes,

MOVIE MATINEES EVERY FRIDAY AT 12:45 PM!

Mar. 1 - The Great Gilly Hopkins: This movie is based on Katherine

Paterson's classic 1978 book about 12-year-old Galadriel "Gilly" Hopkins (Sophie Nelisse). A foster kid who's been in and out of lots of places, Gilly is now put in yet another home, this time under the care of kindly, devout Mrs. Trotter (Kathy Bates). Also starring Julia Stiles.

Mar. 8 - First Man: A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969 (starring Ryan Gosling & Claire Foy).

Mar. 15 - The Boys & Girl from County Clare: A delightful comedy with many dark, dramatic overtones. Two brothers, estranged for years, are competing in a ceili (Irish dance music) band competition. Each will stop at nothing to prevent the other from winning, or even entering, the competition.

Mar. 22 - The Old Man & the Gun: At the age of 70, career criminal Forrest Tucker (Robert Red- ford) makes an audacious escape from San Quentin, conducting an unprecedented string of heists that confound authorities and enchant the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are rookie detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest's commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek) who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

Mar. 29 - The Little Rascals: The sanctity of the He-Man Woman Haters Club is threatened when one of its most respected members, Alfalfa Switzer, falls in love with (of all things!) a girl, Darla Hood.

It's up to Alfalfa's pal Spanky McFarland to set his pal straight before Alfalfa's indiscretions jeopardize the club's chances of winning the big go-cart race in a few weeks.

DOWNSIZING WITH STACY WOLDE We have drawers full of stuff, gifts that we have never used (and never will), furniture we don’t really need, but keep “just in case”

and items that we’ve had for years. These items may be difficult to part with due to nothing more than familiarity while serving no functional purpose. Stacy Wolde, Real Estate Agent, will be here on Thursday, March 14, at 10:00 am, to share her professional tips on how to declutter our homes.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Join Jessica Riveland from Edgewood, Mandan, on Wednesday, March 27, at 10:00 am, as she shares insights on how physical activity can reduce the potential of dementia. Physical activity is a valuable part of any overall body wellness plan and is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline.

If it’s safe for you, engaging in cardiovascular exercise will elevate your heart rate.

This will increase the blood flow to your brain and body, providing additional Nourishment, while reducing potential dementia risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

WELLNESS CHALLENGE MONTHLY GATHERING: FOOD FOR THE BRAIN We will meet on Monday, March 18, at 10:00 am, for our monthly drawing for the Wellness Program. Rachel Iverson, Registered Dietician from Sanford, will share information on foods that promote brain health. We will be drawing for our monthly prizes and the “reserved parking spot”!

FEATURED VOLUNTEERS

Angela “Angie” Heck Linda Everding

Linda has been volunteering at the Reservation Desk at the Burleigh County Senior Center since September of 2018. Linda enjoys concerts and going to casino’s. She previously worked as a teacher for 10 years at BECEP Headstart, as a pre school teacher at the YMCA Youth Development Center for 20 years and as a Bus Monitor for the Bismarck Public Schools for 13 years. She has volunteered in school libraries for Rita Murphy School and Dorothy Moses School. Linda has been married to Lenny for 42 years. They have a

blended family of seven children, seventeen grand children and ten great grand children. She enjoys visiting with all the people at the Center and is glad to help out whenever she can.

Angie has been volunteering for Home Delivered Meals at

the Senior Center for 12 years. When her last living grandparent (Anna Heck) passed away in the Fall of 2006, she decided to Volunteer in her honor. Anna received Home Delivered meals and really enjoyed them as well as visiting with the volunteers. Angie appreciated the service that was provided to her

grandmother and wanted to be part of giving that to someone else’s grandparent. Angie was born and raised in Bismarck and is a graduate of the University of North Dakota. Go Sioux!

She is currently employed at United Tribes Technical College in the Safety and Security Department. Angie enjoys spending time with her wonderful family, awesome friends, and especially the love of her life Andrew and their dogs. She enjoys meeting all the incredible people the Home Delivered Meals program serves, the other amazing volunteers and also the wonderful staff of the Senior Adults

Program. It makes her heart happy!
