Type I: Pre-war Vernacular Cluster The pre-war vernacular cluster typologies that we will be looking at in the three cies oen stand out due to their relave low density as compared newer parts of the city that threaten to envelope them. Yet, as early forms of communal housing, these were already experiments in coping with populaon growth. While the pre-war vernacular cluster varies across all three cies in terms of scale, layout, fabric, and distribuon of communal spaces, they are oen characterized by some form of commercial presence on the streeront, as well as vernacular technologies and forms that help alleviate increasing densificaon. Due to the historic value of some of these buildings, some of these vernacular clusters have become highly sought-aer real estate in years, and one can oen find traces of modificaons, whether through formal or informal means, inscribed on their walls.. Type II: Socialisc Hybrid Block The socialist hybrid block typology refers to mid-rise building blocks that aempted to mix residenal with other kinds of communal funcons into a synthec architectural form, with less obvious divisions between residenal and other programs than later typologies. These hybrid blocks oen came at a me when increased land value forced architectural forms into even higher densies, and new forms of technologies enabled increased heights through shared cores, air condioning, plumbing, structural systems etc. The mix of programs within these blocks vary greatly from specimen to specimen, and some could literally be thought of as cies within buildings, with new paroning of spaces giving rise to a whole range of different programs. In other cases, enre blocks have been wholly purged of their inial residenal programs to be converted to other [economically more valuable] programs.. (6) GROUP STUDIO PROJECT. Type III: Mega Block Podium-Tower The podium-tower typology is the newest typology we are looking at, and refer to mixed use residenal buildings that typify many Asian cies today. The architectural form of the podium-tower typology also manifests the clearest split between the residenal and other programs, with high-rise housing units laid out efficiently above a podium that usually comprises commercial programs. Abeed by ever increasing land costs, units are raonalized through economic efficiency, and the towers vie with each other for iconicity. The split between the commercial and residenal porons of the tower have also given rise to parcular circulatory logics that aempt to split different end users, while sharing the same footprint. These podium-towers oen also provide compensatory public spaces and amenies to counteract land use intensity. Of the three types, the podium-tower typology typically manifests the least amount of mutaons and change, due to its relave short history and strict requirements imposed by the management boards, but we can sll find traces of alteraons, mis-use, and unexpected peculiaries..
