Order of the Arrow August 2014

A Message from our Chief
My Brothers,
In my final Chief’s notes I would like to stress to you once again the importance of living up to your Obligation, and the Scout Oath and Law. Let us be mindful – more than ever – of our job to set an example for all who are around us. Remember the Scout Oath, Law, and Obligation in every action that you take in your life. Everyday wake up and strive to cherish your brotherhood, and cheerfully serve everyone around you. Let your cheerfulness and service rub off on brothers around you, and let them follow you as an example with your leadership in service.
You were elected into the Order of the Arrow because your fellow scouts saw these values radiating from your personality. Don’t let this flame go out,
instead kindle it, and help others do the same. I challenge you to deepen these principles within, but also teach your friends in and out of scouting these values that have brought you to where you are. Kindle this fire in the spirit of your brothers, and the world.
As my term as chief ends, I look back on our past year. I hope that on every level - Brother, Troop, Chapter, Lodge - we did our best to fulfill the obligation and set an example of the Scout Oath and Law. I hope as a Lodge we helped to spread our ideals of Cheerful Service, and instilled these values in others. Hopefully all of you have gained through the opportunities the Lodge and the Order of the Arrow as a whole have offered you and through these you experienced the cheerful joy of brotherhood and service.
I would like to thank you for electing me to this position and giving me an opportunity to serve you as Lodge Chief. I am pleased with our past year and see great potential in the future. I look forward to watching the Lodge as it continues to grow and serve following the values ingrained in us. Together, let us continue to live up to the Obligation, and our commitment to a life of cheerful service and let us never forget the reasons why we were elected as a Brother in the Order of the Arrow.
Thank You, Sam Picus

Fall Reunion 2014
The Shawnee Lodge will hold its annual Fall Reunion September 5-7 at the S bar F Scout Ranch. Our reunion is one of the nation’s largest (and greatest!) OA events. Join us for a great weekend of fun, service, and fellowship!
Inside this edition of The Lookout, you will find a parking plan, trading post hours, and other information relevant to the Reunion. Remember that each youth member must have adequate adult supervision to participate in the weekend! All Arrowmen must provide his or her own equipment and meals, with the exception of Saturday dinner if purchased.
The price of Saturday dinner and patch is $14.00, if paid before August 24, and $17.00 thereafter. (The price is $20 at the door.) The patch by itself is $10.00 and $12.00 after August 24. (The price is $15 at the door.) Both tickets include the ice cream social on Saturday evening. Online registration for Arrowman tickets is also available at www.shawneelodge.org. Tickets purchased online will not be mailed to reduce the chances of lost tickets. PLEASE PRINT YOUR RECEIPT AND BRING WITH YOU TO USE AS YOUR TICKET FOR THE WEEKEND!
The emblem for the Reunion is only available for those who purchase a ticket for the event. Our Lodge does not collect dues, we rely on paying participants at Lodge events. There are only a limited number of emblems available, so purchase your tickets in advance! Make your reservations quickly, as the event has sold out in past years; meals and emblems are limited.
We will have shooting sports activities from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. on Saturday. We will also have a branding station and special exhibits and activities at the midway. Stay turned and review the Fall Reunion version of the Lookout, and the Shawnee Lodge website for more information as it becomes available.
Fall Reunion Rules and Regulations
The Lodge will enforce the following rules to insure that all Brothers and Candidates have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Your cooperation is absolutely essential to keeping the weekend emergency-free.
1. Do not arrive before 4:00 PM. The gates will be locked; and you will not be able to enter. In the past, those arriving early have created problems in the layout of the campsites and chapter area headquarters.
While this is a youth-led event, it is not necessary—or desired—that a Scout leave school early.
2. Thanks to past service projects by chapters, the east side of the main asphalt road will be open to head-in parking. The road can be rough, be cautious! Signs will be posted on the west side of this road prohibiting stopping or parking. We would like to keep this road open for two-way traffic.
3. No parallel parking on or next to the main road.
4. Please make use of the expanded areas of the camporee field west of the power cut for camping and parking.
5. The power cut road is open for one-way traffic only. Head-in parking is allowed on both sides.
6. Do not drive on the camporee field. Nobody wants to sleep in your tire ruts.
7. No traffic will be allowed during ceremonies! The roads will be closed from 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM on Saturday night. If you need to leave during this time, move your car to the designated area near the Rand Building prior to 7:00 PM.
8. No individuals are allowed in the back of trucks.
9. The S bar F Ranch speed limit is 20 M.P.H. Due to the large number of people in camp, please drive at a slower speed and use caution when driving on the roads near the camporee area. Slow down on gravel roads. “One Scout’s life is worth your time, please slow down.” The speed limit will be strictly enforced.

All Candidates and Arrowmen are asked to bring the following equipment: work gloves, hand weed-whips, bow saws, strong garden rakes, and lots of water. Adults may be asked to bring chain saws and gas weed-whips.
Proper protection is required with weed-whips and saws!

The trading post hours are:
Friday: 7:30 – 9:30 PM Saturday: 1:00 – 3:30 PM 8:30 – 10:30 PM Sunday: 9:30 – 10:30 AM

A Note for Ceremonialists:
Please remember that a short-term camping reservation must be made with the Council’s Program Department when individuals or a unit plans to visit, camp, or conduct an activity on Council property. This includes
wanting to look over a ceremonial site.
If you go to a Council property without completing a reservation, the Camp Ranger will ask you to leave.
Reservations are important for the safety of the individuals on property and the Camp Rangers. Your cooperation with this long-standing Council policy is appreciated.
Section Conclave
This year’s Section Conclave will be held at Camp Illinek in the Abraham Lincoln Council, Springfield, IL on September 19 – 21. We are looking forward to a lot of fun activities such as air rifle shooting, archery, field games, and high adventure demonstrations. There will also be several training sessions. Camp Illinek is not that far - only a 90 minute drive from downtown St. Louis. Come join us for a weekend of fun and
brotherhood. If you would like more information, visit the Section website at www.sectionc3b.org.
Register for the event at www.tentaroo.com/sectionc3b. Only electronic registration is available for this event.
Paper registration forms do not exist, and the council office cannot take registrations for you.
Vigil Honor Nominations
All nominations for the Vigil Honor are due in the council office by November 15, 2014. The Vigil Honor is the highest honor in the Order of the Arrow. The Vigil Honor is only presented to Brotherhood members who have shown outstanding service to the Order on a Chapter or Lodge basis, and the Boy Scout camping program, or Boy Scouting in general. Unlike both Ordeal and Brotherhood, there is no set of requirements for you to meet.
Rather, you are nominated by your peers in the Order. Remember that any member of the Order of the Arrow may submit a nomination.
Details on submitting a nomination can be found on shawneelodge.org by clicking on “Vigil Honor Recipients”
under the “Resources” tab.

Hello Gravois!
I hope you all had a terrific summer!
I know I did. If you have stories or pictures from all the Boy Scout stuff you did this summer. Post them on
Facebook at Gravois Trail Order of the Arrow. If you are not already following our page hop on and like it up! Good luck in staring school and I hope to see you at the Fall Reunion.

New Horizons
Greetings Fellow Arrowmen, This has been an eventful year for our chapter, and it has been an honor for me to guide us through it. From the first meeting of
this OA year in November at Incredible Pizza, all the way to this upcoming Fall Reunion, it has been a very active year for us, branching out and trying new events that our chapter has never done before. As we move forward, and a new core of officers take their place in the chapter, the spirit of venturing out and trying new things will continue to live on not only in the chapter leadership, but also in all of those who joined us this year in participating in these new events. I hope that all of you enjoyed being part of the New Horizons OA chapter as much as I enjoyed leading it.
Yours in Service, Clay Alexander
North Star
Greetings North Star!
In my admittedly biased opinion, we have had a fantastic year thus far.
But it is not over! We still have an
August chapter meeting and tons of new ordeal members to induct this fall. You will get more news of our August chapter meeting so keep looking out for those notices and advertisements. Also this fall we must elect a new slate of officers, who also have to choose their chairman. If you would like to get involved and be considered for a chairmanship or officer position, please contact me and I will take you into consideration. This has been a pretty strong year for North Star, and I for one would love to see it be finished out strong.
Your Chief, JT Schwarzbauer

Fellow Arrowmen,
We had a successful spring and a great summer. We are looking forward to a great Fall Reunion at S-F Scout Ranch. We look forward to a lot of candidates completing their Ordeal and a lot
of Ordeal members completing their bond of Brotherhood. I hope to see you all at the OZT November Chapter Meeting on November 6th at 7:30 PM at the LDS Church at 709 S. Henry St.

Brothers in Cheerful Service, I hope you all enjoyed our August Chapter Meeting! As the OA year draws to a close, on behalf of my officers and chairmen, I would like to
thank everyone for their support this year. There were some rough spots along the way, but we got through them.
Fall Reunion is coming up and I wanted to remind you all that we will be inducting new members.
Kichkinet has told them, "[The ordeal] is not an easy journey. Sometimes even friends will mock you, tempt you to betray your promise, test your resolution often, often try to make you faithless. "
So help to bear their burdens by treating them well and always offering aid to them and not harassment.
After all a scout is helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind.
I look forward to seeing you all soon at Fall Reunion.

Greetings fellow Arrowmen, I hope all of you had a great summer and that you made unforgettable memories at Summer Camp. The August Chapter meeting was a ton of fun!
I hope to see everyone at the Fall Reunion, especially those of you who didn't make it to the Chapter meeting. Don't forget to like the Thunderbird Chapter page on Facebook. As always do not hesitate to email if you have any questions.

National Order of the Arrow Conference, or NOAC for short, is like a giant Jamboree for Arrowmen. NOAC 2015 will be especially grand and extravagant because 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. It will be held at Michigan State University from August 3-8, 2015. Registration information will be announced at the Fall Reunion. We will be traveling as a contingent up to Michigan State and will stay in the dorms on campus.
NOAC has many informational classes directed towards Arrowmen ranging from leadership skills to ceremonies to Native American dancing. There are also several other fun activities to be had: Rock Climbing, SCUBA diving, and Lodgeball and volleyball tournaments were seen at the 2012 NOAC. The evenings are always filled with program, including nightly shows full of theatrics and special effects, and a Grand HODAG, a big party for the Arrowmen. You will not want to spend any time sleeping this entire week because there is always something going on!
An unlimited number of youth and adults may attend. National is also looking for youth and adult staffers for various events and activities. If interested, please go to www.oa-bsa.org
If you are interested in attending NOAC 2015, mark the date on your calendars and register at shawneelodge.org on the NOAC page.
http://shawneelodge.org/index.php/events/noac-2015-1 Elangomat and Extended Elangomat Program
The Elangomat, or friend, gives candidates guidance through their Ordeal and throughout their first year in the Order of the Arrow. The Elangomat will be expected to keep in contact with the new Ordeal member and encourage him to attend Order of the Arrow functions. It is a great opportunity to give back to the Order in a simple, yet meaningful way.
The Extended Elangomat Program recognizes the Elangomats who fulfill their obligations of guiding the new members through their first year. The two-part patch for the Extended Elangomat Program, as well as additional information about the program, can be found on the Lodge website, www.shawneelodge.org.
