A Few Words from our District Director

Tuesday, June 29 – Saturday, July 3 was the 42nd Wing Ding in Springfield, IL at the Springfield Expo Center. A big thank you to all that helped with the pre-registrant’s packet pick up on Wednesday, June 30 th . Your time was valued and appreciated.

There was plenty to do including forums to be a part of and trainings to learn from plus things to purchase from the vendors. We have had our bike a few years and still found a new seat cover to add to it plus several Iowans came home with a little more than they went with including a new custom seat and Wingers & Waves cruise winners.

There is plenty to do in Iowa and with bordering states in the next few months and we would love some company at these events, so please read on for more details!

On July 31st and August 1st, we will host safety weekend at DMACC in Ankeny! On Saturday, there will be full ARC (Advance Rider Course) and TRC (Trike rider Course) which has am classroom followed by range practice.

Sunday is range only for ARC - TRC – refresher classes with range only. Greg has more info in his article and the registration flyer is included with this newsletter. We are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces there.

HELP WANTED: The district’s webmasters, Kevin & Cheryle Miller have done a great job in keeping our website maintained and up to date and we thank you for doing so. They have sent us a message letting us know it’s time for them to pass the torch, so to speak, and for someone else to assist with keeping this up to date. If you, or someone you know would be an asset to the Iowa District in this role, please let John and/or Yvette know via email/text or a phone call.

Please add email address gwrraiowadistrict@gmail.com as it will be used for future district information and communications.

Until we meet again, ride safe, stay well and have fun,

Yvette & John Moravec Iowa District Directors

From your Iowa District Educator

This might be too late for some of you that receive this newsletter but I wanted to remind you of the Rider Courses that we are holding in Ankeny on July 31st and August 1st. We are offering these at the very low price of $10 per person. I doubt that you will see these course ever again anywhere at this price. If you look at the District site there is an online sign up for the course. Please disregard that as it has incorrect prices and information. There are flyers out for the 2021 Safety Weekend that has the correct times, dates and prices.

We have only a few people signed up so far, so please contact me right away if you are interested in reserving a spot in one of the classes.

The two wheel class, the ARC, has had the range portion of the course changed. Gone are some of the tight turning exercises. The current focus of the exercises are on stopping, swerving and cornering. These are the skills identified in the 1981 Hurt Study, which was the first comprehensive study done on motorcycle accident, that motorcyclists failed to perform correctly and resulted in a crash. It is named after the head of the study, Harry Hurt. GWRRA decided that we really needed to focus on those skills which would be most beneficial to our members.

The intent is for a new set of TRC (Trike Rider Couse) range exercises to be developed in the near future. However, the current course has a lot of good exercises that can improve good cornering and life saving skills.

As with many of these skills, such as stopping very quickly, we hopefully do not have a chance to use them often. Most

of us do not practice these skills on our own. So, taking one of these classes can be an inexpensive way to get some

practice, refreshing our skills and sharing ideas on how to further refine those skills. Also, they are fun.

If you have any question about the courses please email me at hayeswing@gmail.com. I highly recommend signing up this year for one of the courses and I hope to see you soon.

That is my news for this month. Until next month, stay healthy, stay safe and Greg Hayes
