Why College?
?

student profile by:
• Maintaining good grades – GPA is critical
• Maintaining regular attendance
• Avoiding discipline issues
• Participating in school and community
activities
Student Profile
Keep a file & calendar to manage your
college search, testing and application
data
Colleges look for the strength of the high
school program – challenging classes and
strong testing scores
Colleges prefer a strong junior &senior
year – do your best! Do not drop
challenging courses .
Organization is Key

Resources
Plan to apply to at least four colleges – your list should
include at least one of each of the following:
• Reach School – not “out of reach” but this might be a more selective school - one of your dream schools
• Match School – schools that are a good match for your GPA, class rank and abilities/interests
• Safety School – a school with open enrollment – you are sure to be admitted
• Do not rule out schools that might be out-of-state or
expensive. Sometimes small, private schools have larger
endowments with scholarships available to deserving students
Four or More!
Consider the following and how important these
factors are to you:
Location – in-state or out-of-state
Setting – Rural, Suburban or Urban
Size – large, medium, small
Co-ed, women or men only, diversity?
Do most students live on campus or commute?
Availability of support Services – tutoring, employment
services, disability services, etc.
College Fit
College Admissions – Application categories
Early Decision –earlier deadlines – November 1 – 15 - Binding - If accepted, you are committed to attend. This option limits financial aid comparisons between universities.
Early Action – not binding - earlier deadlines - can apply to more than one college early action
Regular – the college has a specific deadline for applications which are then reviewed and decisions are mailed to all
applicants at the same time (usually April)
Rolling – no deadlines – colleges make decisions soon after application is submitted – decisions are released on a
“rolling” basis
