• Public drivers like Integrated Product Policy (IPP) promote life cycle thinking and management

• In the course of this, Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs) based on LCA gain momentum

• Existing and even more upcoming regulation as for example the CO₂ emission trading require the attention of effected industry

• Especially in the automotive/transportation, electronic and construction industry, the application of e.g. LCA as a tool for support of strategic decisions regarding products plays an important role

• These activities can be conducted effectively only if information from the involved up-steam supply chain are available. Therefore

associations like IISI, EAA, ICA, IZA,... analyze their productions and production processes to support the necessary information

Applications of GaBi 4 – Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS II) GaBi 4

The new Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS II; regulation (EC) No.761/2001) requires that the companies participating have to:

• „...consider all environmental aspects of its activities, products and services...“

• „An organization shall consider both direct and indirect

environmental aspects of its activities, products and services“.

Activity Instruments

• Joint Implementation (JI): Winning emissions certificates out of projects between states, which are committed to the emission reduction

• Clean Development Mechanism (CDM): Winning emissions certificates out of projects in states, which are not committed to the emission reduction, these are mostly developing countries

• Emission Trading Scheme (ETS): Trading of emissions certificates between states, which are committed to the emission reduction

• Each company participating gets certificates for the start emission.

• Emitting more carbon dioxide than allowed means buying additional certificates but means also avoiding cost intensive environmental investments.

• Emitting less carbon dioxide means selling certificates.

Advantages

• Collection of all relevant greenhouse gas emissions.

• Identification of „energy devourers“ and proposals for avoiding carbon dioxide. • Identification of the company‘s risk in respect of climate policy.

• Avoiding emissions where the reduction potentials are the most cost-effective (economical advantages caused by emission trading).

• Possibility for public effective environmental communication.

Disadvantages

• Additional costs for companies caused by investments and the acquisition of emission certificates.

Applications of GaBi 4GaBi 4 - Integrated Product Policy (IPP):

Preparation for integrated product policy (IPP):

Goal: Improvement of the sustainability aspects of products. Therefore it is necessary to analysis the complete life cycle.

Status: IPP is a voluntary activity of industries. Currently a green book exists defining the major contents. A white book was expected for end of 2001 (is delayed). IPP is focusing on the use of

existing environmental standards like DIN ISO 14001 and DIN ISO 14040.

Æ LCA is a major decision tool within IPP to quantify and evaluate potential environmental impacts.
