STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAMME GRADE 8

UNIT 3: Writing a Food Review NOTES

Have you ever read a food review? Have a look at one.

Food review: SAUSSAGE ROLLS

I tasted Flaky Pastry – Sausage Rolls

Appearance/Presentation

It looked very delicious and the pastry was golden-brown. There were flakes of pastry formed on the surface. The sausage meat filling was firm and looked well cooked.

There was some grease on the tray but this was probably due to the sausages. Using low-fat sausages as filling could have been healthier.

Aroma

The smell of the sausage rolls was mouth-watering. I could smell the meaty aroma and the pastry also added a buttery smell to it.

Taste

The pastry tasted lovely and moist although the meat was a little salty. The pastry was crisp yet still softened by the sausage meat. Adding some herbs and spices would have enhanced the taste.

Texture

The texture was crisp to the touch. However, the filling was a little rubbery.

A food review gives the opinion of the writer about the food eaten. It gives details on the food: how it tastes, smells, looks, was cooked.

It uses descriptive adjectives and makes the reader feel like tasting the food. It can include pictures of the food.

Before you start writing a food review, do some background research on the kind of food you want to review.

Write your review on this food.

I had hot chickpea curry served with fluffy flat bread. The spicy gravy was lip-smacking.

When describing the food don’t hesitate to use colorful adjectives. Remember that, you are writing about your experience also, not just the food. You can think of it, in some ways, as the short story of your trip – give details and colorful additions that make the food stand out and feel unique. The more specific the details, the better.

Have a look at the food reviews below. Food Review 1 A DRINK

I tasted a cold alouda.

Appearance/Presentation

It looked very delightful. There were bits of grated agar agar strips and delicious basil seeds floating on top. The pink milky drink appealed to the eyes.

Aroma

The strawberry flavour and rose scent added to the attraction of the drink.

Taste

The cool alouda was delectable. The strawberry flavour was enjoyable while the rose scent added some freshness to the drink.

The drink was neither too creamy nor too watery. It had a consistency. The soft agar agar strips dissolved in the mouth whereas the basil seeds created a gritty feeling to the tongue and enhanced the coolness of the alouda.
